What we do...
Speaking, listening and interacting well with others are fundamental skills which are the building blocks for all areas of life. The early childhood years are a critical period for the development of these skills and are also the best time for interventions to help children with any difficulties.
The Talk About project provides early years speech, language and communication needs (SLCNs) support in Norfolk.
Following on from the success of the Norfolk based project Every Child a Talker, Talk About is a collaborative project which is grant funded by Norfolk County Council and developed and managed by a team of experts at Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust’s Speech and Language Service.
We provide training for staff who work in playgroups, nurseries and reception classes to help them identify and support children aged three to five years-old who have difficulties in developing their speech, language and communication skills.
Talk About is a collaborative project which is
grant funded by Norfolk County Council, and developed and managed by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust’s Speech and
to early years practitioners and teachers in Norfolk so that they are better able to identify children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCNs) and help them to achieve their full potential.
Our face-to-face training includes:
1. How children’s speech and language usually develops.
2. How to spot when speech and language are not developing as well or as swiftly as usual, and what to do about it.
3. How to ensure your own interaction with children offers the best opportunities for language development.
4. How to monitor your group’s speech and language as a whole, and how to track individual children’s speech and language development.
5. How to support children with emerging communication difficulties, such as those associated with language delay, unintelligible speech, stammering or autism.
6. How to work effectively with parents to support their children’s speech and language needs.
How we measure success...
We measure and report on the success of the Talk About project in a number of ways, including:
• Children’s language progress
• Practitioners’ and teachers’ levels of training
• Practitioners’ and teachers’ confidence levels in helping children with SLCNs
• Parents’ knowledge and understanding of how to support their children’s language development
Contact information...
The Talk About team is happy to discuss the project in more detail and to answer any queries you may have about our courses.

The Talk About team...
With dark evenings and cold mornings upon us, it’s good to have a reason to celebrate and the Talk About team has just that! At the end of October we held a celebration evening to reflect on the progress made by our T
alk About community over the last year
. As well as recognising the fantastic support we have received from early years settings and staf
f, we also looked at how, together, we have identified local children’s needs and ensured these are met going forward. Read more about this on pages 4-5. The event also saw the launch of our new Talk About Online Resource Centre. This features practical ideas and information about how you can support children with various speech and language needs. There are also a range of fantastic films, featuring a number of local staf
f and families, which I hope you will look up soon. See page 3 for details.
I’m also delighted to let you know that the Talk About team recently received an award from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, in recognition of the benefits offered by the project to local staff and children. Read more on page 2. And don’t forget, spring is our final Talk About term, so make sure you book your place on one of our training courses soon. W
e also have plans for other activities in early 2014, including art exhibitions in Swaffham and Norwich, so do look out for your invitation! With Christmas just a few weeks away, I hope you’ll all have a chance to do some celebrating of your own. Thank you again for all your support throughout 2013, which has helped to make T
alk About an award-winning project.
