TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
Implementation Risk is Managed by Systemic Approach
Aerospace technology development progress is measured according to TRL scale – technology readiness level.
Basic Research occurs in the laboratory by universities and research centres. Bombardier sponsors research chairs at various universities in Canada.
Mid Level TRL research
Collaborative Research (CRIAQ / GARDN / CARIC )
Leveraged Funding (OCE / NSERC).
Higher level (Technology Demonstration) Activities
New Technology Demonstration Program (Federal Government)

Conclusions
Through sustained technology innovation, Bombardier Aerospace has become one of
the largest commercial airframe manufacturers in the world.
Technology development is costly and requires continued investment over long time
horizons.
In aerospace, investments in technology innovations on products will be in use for several
decades. It is therefore critical that new technologies be properly validated through a
rigorous process.
The recently completed Emerson commission report on aerospace in Canada has
recognized the need for technology innovation and investment, and has provided the
TDP program to provide assistance in bringing new technologies to market in Canada.
This, coupled with the recently announced CARIC initiative will serve to catalyze
