Casal de Ventozela
– Vinho Verde
The 25 hectares belonging to Casal de Ventozela estate are scattered throughout several farms and plots of land, with rather diverse geographical and climatic geological characteristics. This complexity allows us to obtain wines with unique characteristics and personalities. At this time, the entire vineyard is organized in independent plots, in accordance with each variety and all the vines were subjected to clonal selection. Situated in Portugal’s largest viticultural region, Vinho Verde, in the sub-region of Vale do Ave and characterized by strong traditions, Casal de Ventozela estate’s history dates back to 1847, at which time it was the property of the one of the region’s noblest families. In 1978, it was purchased by José Ferreira Cortinhas and underwent rehabilitation and restoration works for several years.
Ventoz Arinto £35.40/doz
Ventoz Loureiro £35.40/doz
Cazas Novas
– Vinho Verde
Cazas Novas is run by Carlos Coutinho. Located at Santa Marinha do Zezere, in the Baiao sub district of the Vinho Verde, these vineyards are the 'last outpost' before entering the red wine producing region of the Douro's Baixo Corgo. Inland, and warmer than most of the rest of the Vinho Verde, the style of wine is much broader, riper and mouth filling, while still maintaining that Vinho Verde character of minerality combined with fresh acidity and modest alcohols.
This is not Alvarinho or Loureiro territory, but Arinto, with its steely backbone combining beautifully with the floral and aromatic Avesso. Together they make a less austere, more commercially attractive style of wine, yet one that maintains good structure and poise. This wine has a really classy feel to it.

Boas Quintas
– Dão
With a tradition in agriculture for more than 130 years, the Cancela de Abreu family has kept records of its winemaking activity since 1884. In 1991, fourth generation Nuno Cancela Abreu decided to apply all of his enology and winemaking experience into a project that would allow him to create high quality wines with character and personality: Thus the Boas Quintas project emerged. Dao wines are famous for their elegant character and bright fruit and freshness.

range (the mountains of the stars). Not only is the area breathtakingly beautiful, it also has the
reputation as the fruit basket of Portugal, growing figs, oranges, lemons, apples, pears and of course, grapes.
Grown at altitude these wines are pure, brilliantly fresh and with a superb fruit profile.

Quinta Foz de Arouce
- Beiras
The Quinta de Foz de Arouce can look back on a centuries-old winegrowing tradition begun by the King of Arouce in Arouce castle, which is currently the home of the fourth Earl of Arouce, Joáo Filipe Osório. He owns 15 hectares of vineyard (12 planted with red varieties, 3 with white) on slatey soils. The vines are around 35 years old. His son-in law is Portuguese oenologist Joao Portugal Ramos and since the
beginning the red has been one of Portugal's finest. Although the estate is to the south of Bairrada, outside the recognised growing area, the wines are made largely from Baga, the tannic and acidulous main Bairrada variety. The de-stemmed grapes are fermented together with the skins for 14 days and the wine is subsequently matured for 6 months in 250-litre casks made of French and Portuguese oak, half of which are new. Annual production is around 10,000 bottles of red.

Before taking the family vineyard management, Pedro worked in different regions in Portugal such as Douro, Alentejo, Tejo and also in California and New Zealand. The winery has finished a 3year
conversion to certified organic wine production.

Vinhos Sanguinhal
- Lisboa
Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal owns 3 estates located in the Demarcated Region of Óbidos (A.O.C.) with 90 hectares of vineyards that have been in full production since the end of the 19th century, namely, Quinta do Sanguinhal, Quinta das Cerejeiras and Quinta de S. Francisco. The company's goal is to modernize, innovate and to meet the standards of the most
demanding consumer. Visit www.vinhos-sanguinhal.pt
The company has undergone modernization over the past few years: vines were re-established based on traditional varieties as well as new varieties to meet market demand; wine-making and bottling facilities have experienced major investments; the cellar is now
equipped with stainless steel vats, controlled temperature equipment for wine fermentation and stabilization and new filtering and bottling systems. The traditional ageing in French and American oak is nonetheless still used.

Quinta do Casal Branco
- Tejo
Jose Lobo de Vasconcelos runs the Quinta do Casal Branco, which lies a little to the north of Lisbon on the east bank of the Tagus, in the heart of the Tejo region. This is a large mixed farm, typical of the area and around 600 hectares in size. The land is used for growing
tomatoes, melons, wheat, maize; breeding Lusitano horses and cattle, and not least, growing grapes and making wine.
140 Hectares are laid to vine, mainly Castelao and Trincadeira
for the reds, and Fernao Pires & Sauvignon for the whites . Several more hectares have recently come to fruit,
including Cabernet Sauvignon,Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet. Traditional winemaking techniques are still used today such as foot treading, combined with modern winemaking technology. In common with most Tejo wines, Casal Branco produces excellent, fruit driven red and white wines, which are both full of flavour, yet smooth and easy to drink - a highly commercial combination. Prices are very sensible. All wines are estate bottled

Ramos. The company now has over 100 hectares of vines under their own control, from planting, through to pruning, picking, fermenting and bottling. The modern and exemplary wine making premises continue to perfect the art of winemaking in the Almeirim area.
The Falua winery shares the name of the traditional Falua sailboats, which were historically used to transport wine down to Lisbon’s port area. The winery has full BRC and IFS accreditation.

SPAIN
HGA - Bodegas Altos de Torona -
Rias Baixas
Situated 3.5km from the river Miño, and 10km from the Atlantic ocean. The vineyards are located on South facing slopes at Altitudes of 200-300m. Although close to the sea and the river Miño, being located on a gentle slope means that neither the mist nor the cold to be found on the hilltop, affect the vineyard. A southerly aspect guarantees good sunshine and allows optimum ripening of the grape.
The sandy granitic soil makes it possible to obtain very fine wines, and also helps to bring out the best expression and aroma from the varieties.
Torres de Ermelo Albariño £48.00/doz
Bodegas Monte La Reina, Toro
Monte La Reina is a new estate incorporating 350 Hectares of vines over two separate plots. Situated on the site of a Posada Real (Royal Inn), the juxtaposition of the modern winery facilities and the old castle make for a perfect combination of the best of the old, with the best of the new. Planted largely with the native Tinta de Toro (of the tempranillo family), and Verdejo, a large range of wines are made –from simple wine of the year; fruity and ready to drink – to much more heavyweight offerings that pack a punchy combination of rich silky fruit, powerful tannins and softening oak flavours.
The estate also boasts a private game reserve of over 1700 hectares and a restaurant that can sit 400!!. The great selling point about this winery is the sheer drinkability of its wines. Fresh, forward fruit styles predominate, making this winery an extremely commercial proposition. There is extensive information on their own website at www.montelareina.es
Bodegas Arribes del Duero
- Arribes
Way out at the very western fringe of Spain, lying hard against the Duero/Douro river and just a stone’s throw from Portugal is the new DO region of Arribes. Originally named Arribes del Duero, it recently changed its identity to simply Arribes, so that it would not be confused with the more famous DO of Ribera del Duero further east.
Highly recommended is Arribes de Vettonia Malvasia 2011. The red variety here is the Juan Garcia,
unique to the region. Relatively high in acidity it makes exquisite perfumed rosés, bursting with ripe tropical fruit, and earthy dry reds with a good balance of fruit, tannin and acidity.
Arribes de Vettonia red Crianza (100% Juan Garcia) £36.00/doz
Rodriguez Sanzo
– Rueda
Javier Rodriguez is a Spanish ‘flying’ winemaker, with innovative ideas to create really special wines. The wines he produces from the Verdejo grape variety especially really are something to shout about. His Dados Verdejo is fermented in French oak and then spends time on double lees with batonage for a period of 4 months.
The vineyards where this wine is produced are set in the heart of Rueda, 750m above sea level with hot days and cool nights which give this wine a fresh zesty character, which complements the rich flavours given by the lees. A must try….
Dados Verdejo white £45.00/doz
