Facts
Join the growing number of employees
who choose to learn while they earn.
STEP ONE:
Choose an occupation
Choose an area that interests you, or that you have some skills in. A careers advisor or counsellor can help you work this out.
Organise some work experience in that industry. Even a week or two in a voluntary role can give you an idea of what a job in that field might be like.
STEP TWO:
Find an employer
Next, you’ll need to find employment in the industry where you would like to undertake your apprenticeship or traineeship. You can:
• check the employment
sections of newspapers for vacancies
• register with the Northern
Sydney Institute’s CareersConnect online at www.careersconnect.nsi. tafensw.edu.au or contact 131 674
• check vacancies on job
search websites
• contact a Group Training
Organisation or visit www. nswgrouptraining.com.au
• do a pre-apprenticeship
course. This is another great way to get started. The skills you learn can give you up to a full year’s credit towards your apprenticeship. Contact the Northern Sydney Institute to find out more.
HOW TO GET AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP
Choose from
600
apprenticeships and
traineeships in NSW
100,000+
apprenticeships
and traineeships in
NSW are approved
each year
STEP THREE:
Apply for a traineeship or apprenticeship
Get it in writing. Your employer is required to contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) and complete a Training Contract. The AAC will provide you and your employer with information on government incentives that are available.
STEP FOUR:
Start your training with US!
You will need to obtain your Unique Stident Identifier (USI) prior to your enrolment. Go to www.usi.gov.au and click ‘Create your USI’. Then get in touch with the Northern Sydney Institute to confirm your start date. You will need to have your signed Training Contract or Training Plan Proposal, from your AAC as proof of your apprenticeship or traineeship.

You’re in a one-on-one mentoring session with your new sales representative. You know they’ve got the potential, but your job today is to give them the encouragement they need to perform at their best. Life’s been tough for your new employee, you can see the tiredness on their face, the notebook on the table in front of them, covered in scrawled notes, and their phone is buzzing away on silent in their pocket – but they turn their attention to you and what you have to say.
Your employee will leave today a different person – a person who knows they have the support of their manager. You’ll be responsible for that person’s performance at work, and ultimately their happiness. Every day, you’ll keep it together, and lead the team.
Management is necessary for each and every organisation, and a great career choice for those who love to motivate others and see businesses succeed.
With a course in management, you will learn a range of skills to provide strong leadership, communicate clearly and resolve conflict. You will also develop a knowledge of e-business, industrial relations policies, strategic planning, project management and financial planning.

If you are already a manager or someone looking for a post-graduate qualification that’s fast and effective, then the Australian Graduate Management Consortium (AGMC) is a dream come true!
The AGMC is a unique joint initiative between Charles Sturt University (CSU) and TAFE NSW.
The AGMC aims to offer a university qualification with a practical approach, designed and developed to meet the needs of busy managers. The courses are fast paced and flexible, allowing you to complete each program in one year of part-time study. If you complete the Graduate Certificate in Management (Professional Practice) then the Graduate Diploma of Management (Professional Practice) you will receive an eight subject credit towards the Master of Management.
This means you are only required to complete an additional four subjects to gain Master of Management qualification.
To apply for the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, you must demonstrate one of the following:
• More than five years’ experience in a senior management
position with significant responsibilities and good writing skills
• A diploma or advanced diploma from TAFE or other Registered
Training Organisation plus five years’ work experience, in a supervisory/management capacity
• An undergraduate degree plus two years’ work experience.
A significant number of our students who have completed the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma have not undertaken a university course previously.
