From the Pastor

My Dear Parishioners,

There is a quote attributed to St. Augustine in which he says, ““If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.” The quote makes rational sense. Think about it: I want a black vehicle and I go to the dealer and find this impressive looking pickup truck. I really want this pickup truck but there are changes that I wish to make to it –to my liking. I really like the look of the front of the truck and its length but I want full seating for 8. I want a hatch-back on the hatch-back of the vehicle to transport items in an enclosed space and windows all around the vehi-cle, and four separate side doors that all open in the same direction. As much as I like the pickup, I have changed the identity of the pickup into an SUV. The simple logic is: If I do not accept the entity as it is but want to change it to my liking, then it is something else that what presented/offered/arrives to me. Of course there are different types of changes that I could make to this truck and still be in the market for this truck (color, seating features, tire rims, etc…)

There are substantial changes (changes the truck into and SUV) and there are minor changes.

Much of what we do in life comes from this consum-erist mentality and approach. If we are not careful, it can creep into and corrupt the most important reali-ties in life (wanting one’s spouse to change to be a different person than the one married, placing bur-dens on a child for them to become what you want them to be other than who God created them to be, an individual wanting to change their God-given identity to their preferences etc….)

This is especially tempting when it comes to our Catholic faith. This phenomenon has often been called cafeteria Catholicism –meaning I pick and choose what I like to believe. This is tempting for us to do and at one time or another I am sure all have

dabbled in this. However, it is for love of God that we need to continually refuse this temptation and to assess whether or not we might have adopted this ap-proach to following Christ. To apap-proach the Gospel and to pick and choose what I like to believe means that I have changed the Gospel and thus formed my own belief system. The result is that I am not longer following Christ but a figment of Christ.

A question for each of us to ponder is: what has God told us about Himself (which includes what He has taught us through His Church) about who He is (doctrinal teaching) and how we are to live (moral teaching) that I do not accept? If we have made a self -selection of items to believe and not believe, then as Augustine says –this is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Have a blessed week, Fr. Eric M. Bennett Pastor

Interested in becoming Catholic?

Are you or do you know someone who is thinking about entering the Catholic Church? We are preparing to start our RCIA classes this fall. RCIA is the for-mation program by which we assist those who are in-terested in becoming Catholic to learn about the Catho-lic faith and to help them say ‘yes’ to God’s invitation to enter into His Church. Last year we had two adults enter into the Church from our collaborative. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Fr. Bennett at frbennett@visitationmilton.org.

Sunday in Ordinary Time

What good is a great story unless someone tells it? What’s a wonderful song unless someone sings it? How can an idea change the world unless someone makes it work? Ideas, songs and stories all need to be put into practice so their value will be seen, heard and known.

Jesus confronts and rebukes evil and then banishes it. People were amazed and began to ask the basic question of faith “who is this man?” The answer leads to a choice, sometimes called the leap of faith; is Jesus the Messiah? If the answer is yes, life is never the same.

Faith is not just a good idea. It must be lived and expressed, preached and accepted, taught and un-derstood. By word and deed, Jesus shows us the power of faith: its ability to conquer sin and death, its power to change lives and its availability to eve-ryone. In imitation of Jesus, when we reach out to others, and offer the love and mercy we have been given, faith is shown as a way of life, and an open invitation is given to everyone to hear the Good News. And our pursuit of holiness and eternal life begins.

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Fr. Bill's Youth Ministry January Update The Visitation Collaborative has teamed up with St. Agatha Parish to start a monthly Fr. Bill's lunch packing service. To keep everyone safe (including those who eat our meals at Fr. Bills), we decided to try a monthly drive thru & drop off meal packing event We thought this would allow everyone to fol-low all safety precautions and still make a difference in our community!

In December, we had 6 families make over 120 meals! We are excited to share that on January 26th, we had 15 families put together over 300 meals for Fr. Bills. We look forward to continuing to engage families and teens in service, while providing meals for our brothers and sisters who are hungry in our community. Please continue to pray for our youth and this important ministry!

A BIG thank you for those who have supported this ministry, both financially and with your prayers! We are excited that our Fr. Bill's lunch packing service has started and will hopefully continue to grow! Check out our picture

to the left!

Cheerfully in Christ, Will

Smooth Seas do not make Skillful Sailors”, this proverb speaks to the challenges we have all faced this

year, but in these challenges, we have learned lessons of resiliency, humility, purpose and gratitude. Above all however, this year has shown that God has a plan for us and that we must have faith.

St. Mary of the Hills School, like many Catholic Schools, has experienced an increase in enrollment since September. Families looking for an in-person learning alternative to their public schools tell me that their child has found his or her “home” at St. Mary of the Hills School. Our new students are thriving thanks to the encouragement and support of teachers and classmates.

Catholic schools have been able to provide consistency for students during this time of uncertainty by offer-ing a safe and lovoffer-ing environment, nurturoffer-ing students academically and emotionally. I visit classrooms and see the joy on students’ faces; I hear the excitement in their voices. It could be a classroom of middle schoolers’ debating current events, a class of budding writers sharing poems they have written with each other or a room of Kindergarten students squealing with delight as they master a new concept. There is an energy that emanates when we are together as a community.

Our amazing students come to school every day from different backgrounds, ethnicities and communities, making for a vibrant multi-cultural classroom. They discover that intelligence, laughter, and friendship are colorblind, forever empowering St. Mary’s students to see their world –and all the people in it- differently. Through a foundation rooted in faith we develop young men and women of strong moral character. St. Mary’s students are peer leaders and change makers in their communities, understanding the importance of acceptance and tolerance in making the world a better place.

Visitation Prayer

O Virgin of the Visitation, compelled by the Holy Spirit, and with Jesus hidden beneath your Heart, you arose in those days and, with haste, went to your

kins-woman Elizabeth, to serve her in her time of need. Elizabeth acknowledged your faith, and a new song came to flower on Your lips; thus did you magnify the Father whose mercy is from generation to generation. Visit us now, O Mother of Our Lord, and obtain for us

a quickening of prophetic grace, that we may serve our brothers and sisters in faithfully loving the Church, and love the Church in humbly serving each

other, and so, under your gracious protection, again and again repeat your words: “Behold, I am the

hand-maid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to your word.”
