'SMITHS'
The food at 'Smith's is about taste, quality and provenance, and we’ve used the same philosophy when compiling the wine list. In most cases, we’ve gone directly to the source – the grower – to ensure that the wines are sustainably produced, and that they are true to type. By this we mean that they express the character of the grape variety from which they are made and the site on which the grapes are grown. The same principles have been applied to the selection of our steaks and our wines. We have also put a lot of focus on the value offered by the wines on this list. The higher the cost price of the wine to us, the lower the margin we take. So you’re getting much more wine for your money at the lower end of the list. We hope you enjoy drinking the wines as much as we enjoyed compiling the list.

Established in 1363 yet it was only in 1981 that this climat was finally promoted to Grand Cru. The estate was purchased in 1996 by the Freune family and since then dramatic changes have taken place, leading to an upsurge in quality. At 8.8 hectares, this is the largest Grand Cru parcel in Burgundy under one proprietor. Winemaker Thierry Brouin has been in charge since 1979. The vineyards are run on more or less organic lines, with no chemical anti-rot sprays, and ploughing of the soil by horse. In the cellar, he likes to use the majority of the stems, favours punching down over pumping over, and prefers to restrain the amount of new oak – around 50% for the grand cru.
Traditionally the finest wine of the Médoc after the 1st growths, Palmer slipped a bit in the 1980’s but has returned to top form recently, rejoining the super-second mini-league alongside Lascases, Cos d’Estournel, Ducru, Pichon Lalande and others. Unusually for the Medoc, there is 44% Merlot in the blend with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. All the Petit Verdot was put in the second wine - Alter Ego. Another sterling effort from Palmer offering wondefully fragrant, chocolate tinged black fruit on the nose. The palate shows real fruit concentration and purity but also displays the characteristic Palmer elegance. There's no hint of heaviness on the palate and the fruit seems more layered with notes of raspberry, black cherry and minerals coming through. The tannins are apparent but not invasive. All in all the wine is perfectly balanced with lovely, lingering sweetness to the finish. This is a beautiful wine and certainly ONE OF THE WINES OF THE VINTAGE.
Chateau Latour is like no other Bordeaux wine. It is in a unique class of its own. Chateau Latour has been the most consistent of the First Growth chateaux from the Medoc for over 100 years! Since 1996, Chateau Latour has been producing some of the best wines in their history! This is a beautifully rich Chateau Latour boasting a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet, smoky, charcoal, cassis, graphite, and forest floor-scented nose, full body, an attractive freshness, and sweet, noble tannins. This layered Latour is one of the vintage-s top dozen or so wines.
Wild Duck Creek Estate, located in the countryside around Heathcote, was established in 1981 by David & Diana Anderson and comprises nine acres of vineyard with fruit sourced from another seven vineyards in the area. The Duck Muck Shiraz (about 200 cases or less are produced) is made only in exceptional vintages. Opaque black purple-coloured, with a viscosity resembling vintage port, this thick, chewy Shiraz exhibits a panorama of black fruits intermixed with liquorice, tar, roasted herbs, and sweet oak. The acidity and tannin appear to be missing because of the wine's wealth of fruit, glycerine, and extract.

The clay soils of the right bank are better suited to the earlier ripening Merlot grape, which gives plusher, more rounded wines than those made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the more gravelly soils of the Medoc and the rest of the left bank.
