Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the ninth annual Platts Top 250 Asia Awards Dinner. We are pleased to once again host this special event in Singapore, and for the sixth year, to do so as part of Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW).

The 2014 Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings® recognize the most financially successful companies in the industry as a whole. Our rankings also laud sector and regional leaders and spotlight the fastest-growing companies both globally and regionally.

This evening as we celebrate these top companies’ achievements and advancements within the industry, we pay special honor to the Asia-Pacific leaders. These regional front-runners, whose roster expands annually, now account for 82 of the Top 250 and represent 11 countries: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Tonight, in addition to unveiling the 2014 company rankings, we have the special pleasure of naming Platts’ second “Asia CEO of the Year.” Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the winning business leader will be counted among the nominees for “CEO of the Year,” an honor accorded as part of the Platts Global Energy Awards and announced at a gala event in New York in December.

We are delighted that so many of our top-ranking regional and global winners are participating in tonight’s celebration. We congratulate them on their success, and thank all of you for joining us in honoring them.

Sincerely,

Larry Neal President, Platts

The Platts Top 250 recognizes outstanding financial performance for the previous year. Each company listed in the Platts Top 250 has distinguished itself through remarkable performance and the outstanding efforts and dedication of its team. Being awarded a ranking in the Platts Top 250 is an accomplishment of prestige and honor in the energy industry. The Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings® also showcase the world’s fastest-growing energy companies,

based on each company’s compounded revenue growth over a three-year period.

To attain the most comprehensive assessment of energy companies’ financial performance, we use four key metrics: asset worth, revenues, profits, and return on invested capital. In addition to ranking the top energy companies overall, Platts also distinguishes best performance in eight industry subcategories and three global regions (see below).

This annual survey of global energy companies by Platts measures companies’ financial performance using four key metrics: asset worth, revenues, profits, and return on invested capital.

All companies on the list have assets greater than US $5 billion. The fundamental and market data comes from a database compiled and maintained by S&P Capital IQ, a business unit of McGraw Hill Financial.

Energy companies were grouped according to their Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) code. Each company is assigned to an industry according to the definition of its principal business activity.

Because the survey is global, and because all countries do not share a common financial reporting standard, the information presented is for each company’s most current reporting period. Since then, material changes to a company’s financial health may have occurred. Data for U.S. companies came from Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Form 10K.

The company rankings are derived using a special Platts formula. We added each company’s numerical ranking for asset worth, revenues, profits, and ROIC and assigned a rank of 1 to the company with the lowest total, 2 to the company with the second-lowest total, and so on.

Finally, ROIC figures, widely regarded as a driver of cash flow and value, were calculated using the following equation: ROIC = [(Income before extraordinary items) - (Available for common stock)] ÷ (Total invested capital) x 100 where “Income before extraordinary items” is net income less preferred dividends and “Total invested capital” is the sum of total debt, preferred stock (value), noncontrolling interest, and total common equity.
