together a wide range of local public bodies and voluntary organisations that are all concerned with the effects of drug and alcohol use in Wirral. The DAAT is responsible for coordinating and delivering the local strategy to reduce the harmful effects of substance misuse on individuals and on the communities they live in.

The Government strategy sets out three main themes: Reducing demand – for both drugs and alcohol Restricting Supply – making the UK an unattractive destination for drug traffickers

Building Recovery in communities – working with people who want to tackle their dependence on drugs and alcohol.

The strategy also provides for better education and information with early drug and alcohol intervention for young people and families.

Wirral DAAT has compiled this directory to make people aware of the drug and alcohol services that are available in their locality. It also provides brief information on a full range of general services that provide help, advice and support to those people and their families who are affected by drug and alcohol misuse.

We hope that you will find this booklet useful and a tool for finding the help and support that you may need. Victim Support is the national independent charity for people affected by crime (victims and witnesses), their family and friends. Trained staff and volunteers offer free and confidential advice, information, support and practical help after crimes, including burglary, assault, harassment, domestic violence, rape and murder. All contact is in the strictest confidence.

Witness Service will help with information on the police, court procedures and criminal justice system. It also helps prepare compensation and insurance claims and information on attending court.

The Archway Centre offers a full range of alcohol treatment services under one roof and provides advice and information to anyone concerned about their own or someone else’s drinking. Help is also available for cocaine users, particularly those who drink at the same time The centre also provides a coffee shop and healthy eating café open to the public.

This service is a residential rehabilitation unit to help substance misusers become drug-free in a safe and supportive environment where residents can use groups and key work sessions to explore issues around their drug use.

Services provided:

long term programmes (six-nine months rehabilitation) made up of a series of stages

residential detox subject to appropriate assessment re-entry phase towards the end of the programme to support transition to independent living

floating support for clients who remain in Wirral, once they have left the programme.

Who is the service for?

Adults 18+ with substance misuse problems that meet the assessment criteria.

How to access:

Referral from anyone, including the client, by telephone, letter, or email. Residential placement is subject to appropriate and satisfactory assessments being completed by both the local authority (social services) and the agency delivering treatment services. Assessments for Wirral residents are carried out on behalf of the Social Services Department (page 72) by ARCH Initiatives (page 12). The acceptance of a referral to any residential project is dependent on meeting the acceptance criteria for that specific project.

Spider offers people who have stopped using drugs the chance to drive their life forward. They provide a wide range of group workshops and activities (Creative writing, Photography, Football coaching and Outdoor pursuits to a drug-free population. These are aimed at relapse prevention, confidence and self esteem building and peer mentoring.

Referrals can be made via Wirral based drug services such as ARCH Initiatives, Phoenix Futures and Wirral Drug Service, and they will also accept self-referral.

CWP Alcohol Service offers advice, information, and treatment to individuals 18+ whose is life adversely affected by alcohol. The service is free and confidential, available to individuals wanting to know more about safer drinking and how to minimise the effects of harm associated with alcohol use. Clients can be seen at the Stein Centre or at other venues to suit them such as One Stop Shops, CVS, Sure Start or their GP.

Dependent Drinkers

Dependent Drinkers with An Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score of 16+.

No waiting for individuals who attend drop-in facility, seen without an appointment. Referral assessment – between one and two weeks.

Offers help to any professional or member needing information, advice or support around alcohol use. Under 18’s are referred on to local Young People’s Services. Following assessment some clients may be referred to another service, or discharged. Not a prescribing/crisis service.

Based in Woodchurch, the team sees people in a variety of settings in the community such as general practices and one stop shops.

The service aims to support people that drink in a manner harmful to their health, thus preventing them from becoming dependent on alcohol and reducing the incidence of long term ill health such as cirrhosis, coronary heart disease, cancer and depression.
