TERM 3

WEEK 7

4 SEPTEMBER 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As we move towards the end of Term 3 there are many events on the school calendar to be completed.

Athletics Carnival

The Faction Athletics Carnival was a great success with all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 participating in many different events throughout the day. The students participated enthusiastically in all their games and running events and it was great to see wonderful sportsmanship between competitors and factions throughout the day. I would like to thank Mr Morrison for organising such a wonderful event for all children to enjoy. Congratulations to Stanley Gold Faction for winning the 2020 Athletics Faction Shield. Congratulations to the Runners Up Boys and Girls and Champion Boys and Girls. I would like to thank all the parents and caregivers who assisted in the events prior to and during the Faction Carnival. This help included the running events held at J A Lee Reserve, jumps and throws held on the senior oval and officiating races during carnival day. Without your support and participation, these events would not be possible. Thank you for assisting us to provide these wonderful opportunities for our students.

We now move onto the Interschool Athletics Carnival to be held in a couple of weeks. Students selected in the interschool team will be practising in

preparation for this event. EduDance Concert

The EduDance Concert will be held on the basketball court on Wednesday September 23. Information about the event will be provided to the school community closer to the concert. I have been asked by a number of parents about who should attend the concert. It is important that we keep the number of family members to a minimum. In a normal year we would love everyone to come along to see this amazing concert, however, COVID-19 has caused many changes in the way that we attend gatherings. Therefore, could families please use their discretion when inviting family members to the concert to ensure that all families are safe and are able to respect social distancing requirements. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Cyber safety

The Department of Education has asked all schools to provide a statement about last week’s headline in the Saturday West Australian newspaper. You may have seen media coverage over the weekend regarding a Western Australian Police investigation that has uncovered a series of online grooming

offences against young people in the wider community. Charges of this nature are unsettling and we want to make

sure that all parents/carers remain aware of the importance of cyber safety. We want to reassure you that there is no indication that any of these grooming offences have taken place at a school. We know you are best placed to talk to your children about cyber safety and there are many resources to help guide you through this on the Department of Education website. Other online resources are available on the eSafety Commissioner website.

Last weekend’s story may lead to children being more aware of these types of offences and possibly wanting to disclose information. The Department’s parent helpline, 1800 882 345, is available for you to call if you have any questions or concerns, and is staffed by psychologists, child protection officers and principals. The phone line is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm this Monday to Friday.

The Disability Standards for Education

Have your say on the Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards).

The Standards help to make sure students with a disability can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as students without a disability. This supports people with a disability to be able to participate fully in society and have more opportunities throughout their life.

The Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment, on behalf of the Minister for

Education, is undertaking a review of the Standards through a consultation process. The law says the Standards need to be reviewed every 5 years.

To participate please use the following link

The Year 6 camp for Term 4 is looking very exciting and it will be a great opportunity for our wonderful year 6 students to enjoy some outdoor activities and being away from home for a little while. Behind the scenes there has been a great deal of planning and fundraising to ensure the camp will go ahead successfully. The total amount of money raised for the school camp was $3416.00. Thank you to the Year 6 teachers, Mr Vuckovic and Mr Kendrew for all the planning required for a successful camp and to the parents and students who have assisted in fundraising for camp.

Planning for 2021

We are already beginning to prepare for 2021. An essential part of this is knowing our student numbers, as this assists us in organising classes and employing necessary staff.

If your family is moving to a new area or school, please complete the form in this newsletter and return to the office ASAP.

Father’s Day Stall

Thank you to the members of the Events and Fundraising Committee for running a very successful Father’s Day stall during the week. The stall raised over $1400.00 for the school. I am sure all Dads on Father’s Day will receive a wonderful present on Sunday.

In-Term Swimming

After reviewing our request for make-up Pre-Primary-Year 2 swimming, the Department has informed us

that they are unable to reschedule the lessons this year. Therefore, swimming will only be operating for

students in Years 3-6.

Please stay healthy and safe. Kind regards

Ian Bersan A/Principal

CHECK OUT OUR 2020 SCHOOL MOSIAC

Most of the PP to Year 6 students had their photo taken in the last week of Term 2 to create a Lathlain PS

mosaic using their faces. The mosaic is located in the library, classrooms and student notice board.

Students really enjoy finding themselves and their friends in the logo. Mrs Ionascu creates this mosaic logo

annually to emphasise what is most important at our school which is each individual students belonging

and working together as a school community.

BEBRAS COMPUTATION THINGKING CHALLENGE

Students in Year 3 to Year 6 will be participating in Round 2 of Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge.

This is a global challenge of 15 questions which get kids thinking critically and creatively. Most questions

are multiple choice and students can listen to the questions being read aloud if they choose to, making this

challenge accessible to a variety of abilities.

For the first time, Round 2 has all new questions. Students will take the challenge during their Digital

Technologies lesson in Week 8 or Week 9. Log in details were provided to students and these will allow

them to check their results in Week 10 or complete the challenge at home if they are absent from the

lesson.

Students are welcome to practise past challenges by visiting
