SPRING TERM 1, WEEK 4 Home Learning Pack

Task

English  We are looking at a new book this week called Emma Jane’s

Aeroplane. Have a look at the front cover of the book (see attached resource) and discuss the following things with your adult: What do you think the book is about? Who is Emma Jane? Why does she have an aeroplane? Where do you think she will go in her aeroplane? Why does she have all those animals with her?

Listen to the story here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9787x_6gw0A

Discuss with your adult a time when you have been on an aeroplane. Where did you go? Who did you go with? Was it a long or short journey? Did you enjoy going on an aeroplane? If you haven’t been on an aeroplane – where would you like to go? What do you think it would be like?

 Our new book Emma Jane’s Aeroplane uses lots of rhyming words. Do you know what a rhyming word is? Can you think of any examples and share them with your adult?

Look through the attached PowerPoint slides with your adult about rhyming words. At the end of the PowerPoint see if you can add any of you own rhyming words to the list.

Use the attached worksheet to match the correct rhyming words, then see if you can think of one example yourself and write it down the bottom of your sheet.

 Look back over the story using the above link. Pay close attention to all the different places Emma Jane visits. Once you have looked back over the story see if you can tell your adult all the places Emma Jane visited in her plane. If you are feeling super clever, see if can remember the animals she picks up at each destination.

Once you are confident you can remember all the places Emma Jane visited, draw them onto the story map provided.

 Have you ever received a postcard from someone that has been on holiday? What is a postcard? Why do people send them? Look at the examples of the postcards provided, concentrating on the front of the postcards.

Today we are going to design and draw a postcard for one of the places Emma Jane visited in her plane. Think about what you will need on the front of your postcard – the name of the place and a picture of

something famous from that place.

Once you have chosen one of the places Emma Jane visited, draw the front of your postcard. We are only doing the front of the card today, not the back.

 Yesterday you designed the front of your postcard for one of the places Emma Jane visited in her aeroplane. Today we are going to be writing on the back of the postcard.

Look at the examples provided and discuss with your adult what information is written on the back of the postcard – You will need to decide who Emma Jane is sending the postcard to and where they live, you will need a stamp and then you will need to decide what Emma Jane is going to write about the place she visited.

Once you have decided all this information, you will need to write it on the back of your postcard (see attached template).

- There are two activities related to the sounds we learnt this and last week.

Maths This week we are working with Weight and Capacity

- Let’s weigh some objects – Students will be introduced to the

measurement of Weight and using the words heavy and light to describe the objects. Can you register when something is heavy or light by looking at the scale.

- Making Predictions - Can you stand like a balance? Students are going to hold a bag of sugar and a bag of cotton wool – what would the balance do? Which one is heavier? Can you predict how the scale would react and why?

- Student’s to compare the weight of different objects with other

objects. Fill up two shopping bag. One with small items and one with larger items. Which bag will be the heaviest and why?

- We are learning to use language related to weight and describe objects as heavier and lighter. You will be taking on the role of a scale again, but this time displaying weight through the movement of your body indicating the lighter and heavier end of a scale.

- To register units of measurements and connecting understanding of weight when describing objects around you.

Physical Development

and Design

This week as we are focusing on air transport, we are making a variety of aeroplanes.

● As a continuation from previous weeks using junk modelling materials, this week can you find some more junk modelling resources to make an aeroplane. Join all the recycle pieces together and make your aeroplane. Add details to your chosen aeroplane by decorating it using paints (see picture 1 as an example).

● See if you can create your own aeroplane by using ice lolly sticks and clothes peg (see picture 2).

● You will need A4 plain paper, 1 clothes peg, 2 long ice lolly sticks and 1 small ice lolly stick. First, decorate your clothes peg, and all the ice lolly sticks in different colours, either using paints, felts, markers. Next get A4 plain white paper, colour it in blue (to make it look like the sky) you can create some clouds if you want by adding cotton wool. Then glue one long ice lolly stick slightly near to the edge of the clothes peg and the smaller ice lolly stick to the other end of the clothes peg. Glue the other long lolly stick underneath parallel to the long lolly stick to the clothes peg. Finally add a little cotton wool to the tip of the clothes peg

● Can you make a paper aeroplane following the instructions below. ● We are going to make a hot air balloon. You will need a paper plate,

string and a plastic cup. Firstly, decorate the paper plate using felt tips or collage it using different materials. Then attach strings at the edge of the paper plates and attach the other end of the strings to the cup either with cello tape or glue (see picture 3 below).

Understanding of the World

 We are going to make boats out of different materials and test them out. Do they float? Do they sink? Can you load them up with weight – will they float? Let’s get busy and make some boats! See the attached activity sheet for more information.

 Do you know about Road Safety? Do you know how to cross the Road safely? Look through the PowerPoint slides and then discuss with your adult how to stay safe while crossing the road.

Float boat kids’ science experiment

preparation:

Begin by making raft using different materials.

Give your kids the freedom to experiment and

create their boat. While they are making it ask

them relative questions like why they think this

raft will hold a lot of weight?

Floating boat kids’ materials:

You will need:

– Foil tray

– Food colouring (optional to colour the water for extra fun)

– Paper

– Lego

– Aluminium foil

– Any other material you want to try floating with

weight

– Popsicle stick

– Straw

– Colouring pencils (optional for colouring paper)

– Glue stick

– Pennies or coins

– Playdoh

Lego Boat:

To make these super simple rafts you need

Lego bricks and tiles.

– Build with Lego tile at the base of your boat.

Then use Lego bricks to make the borders and

sides. Be as creative as you want.

– Once your raft is done. Make a few more to

test different structures.

– Decorate your raft or boat in any way you like.

– To make the flag simply use playdoh to stick

the paper straw.

– You can make the flag using felt, foam, or

paper. We used paper and coloured the flag.

(15)

Foil and Paper Boat

These two boats are very simple to make.

– Aluminium foil: Take a sheet of foil and start

rolling the sides to form a raft.

– Paper: We created simple boats using printer

paper.

We created a video tutorial to show you

how to

make paper boat and foil boat

. Video makes it

super easy to follow instructions. It is also

easier for kids to make it. Please note find the

instructions during the experiment.

Are you ready to test these rafts in the water?

To test your boats first, see if they float without

any weight on them. If they do, you can load

your boats up with some weight (the coins and

pennies). Do they still float? How many coins

can your boat hold before they sink?

Tell us about your results and post it on Google

Classroom.

Can you turn yourself into a Scale?

Can you estimate which will be heavier and which will be Lighter.

Let’s check our predictions using ourselves as a balance!

Which weighs more and which weighs less?

Share your predictions by recording your discussion and post it on Google Classroom.
