Welcome to September!

Students are in the midst of NWEA MAP testing.

This is an online assessment of reading and

math skills.

We had our first fire drill this morning

during homeroom. We anticipate practicing all

of our emergency procedures throughout the

school year. This includes fire, lock-down and

sever weather.

You should expect to see the homework load

begin to increase a bit (if not already) for

your student. Please make sure you check Home

Access frequently to stay up-to-date on how

your child is doing academically. If you need

assistance with Home Access, please contact

Mrs. Vazquez in the Main Office at

630-636-2600.

Ms. Amy Shaw, Guidance Counselor

I'm Ms. Shaw, School Counselor for students last name A-L. I figure most folks would rather look at a picture of my two dogs than me! Daisy is on the left (she was my children's Christmas present last year), Ruff-N-Stuff on the right. My current personal life is pretty standard - married, two children (Lucy, 3rd grade; Miles, 2nd grade) and we live in Naperville. A long time ago BK (before kids), I lived in Chicago and went to culinary school for fun while I worked downtown. Soon after that I went to get my Masters in Counseling and have been working as a school counselor ever since. Along the way I got married, we moved to Portland, OR for four years, had two kids, then moved back to Chicago. Prior to Thompson I worked in Chicago Public Schools along with my husband...and realized we needed to move to the burbs before the kids were in school! I originally hail from South Bend, IN (GO IRISH!! Yes, I went to college at Notre Dame). In my 14 years as a school counselor I've also had many "extra duty" jobs like Senior Class Advisor, Student Council Leader, High School Drama Director, Creative Writing Club Advisor, and even Poms couch here at Thompson a few years back. As you can see from this list, my interests are quite varied. I absolutely love to cook and do it every night for my family...but I don't do dishes! I also enjoy reading, repainting the living room as many times as I can, goofing off with my kids, singing really loud in the car, drinking ice tea, and taking family trips into Chicago to cause trouble. As a person I tend to be silly and pretty straightforward, which I think my students appreciate.

Mr. Steven Howland, STARS Instructor

I grew up in central Illinois in a town known for having a maximum security state prison. I am the middle child and have two sisters. I was very involved in choir at church and school and was part of the high school Madrigals all four years. I worked for 13 years as a Property Claims Adjuster before stepping into Education. My wife and I live locally and have 2 cats, Emma and Abby. We love to travel and explore the world and catch a Cubs game every now and then. I just may see you in Hawaii next summer…or maybe at Wrigley Field!

Mrs. Teresa Fawer-Buan, LRC

One thing many people don't know about me is that I was in a ballet company in my youth (but I don't promise to be graceful when I'm not dancing). Speaking of my youth, my grandmother was the person who influenced me the most. She was a rural school teacher who began her career in a one room school house. Throughout her career she quietly and compassionately established programs for students in need to receive food and necessities before and after school. I blame her completely (I mean credit her) for choosing to work in foster care as a caseworker and then administrator in my early career life. When I'm not at school, I love dragging my family into the outdoors in order to hike (including geocaching & orienteering), kayak, bike, and climb. At home, I drive them all crazy with my mission to live a greener life. We also have an addiction to rescuing dogs. Our current four legged members include Duncan (a mutt of many flavors) and Finnegan (a basset with an extreme drooling problem). As if they weren't enough of a handful, I had a lapse in judgment this

summer and allowed Anna to get a hamster, Pandy Po. Finally, shocking but true, I love to read, and even better, I love to encourage others to read.

I am an Oswegoan born and raised and am a former Thompson Tiger myself! My husband is from the Wisconsin Dells area of Wisconsin from a little town called Baraboo. We have two wonderful little girls- Tessa (almost 3) and Emma (4 1/2 months). I love being a teacher and have spent my entire 13 years here at Thompson as a tiger. Other than teaching history at Thompson, I also have a background in theatre as well. I enjoy directing here at Thompson, but miss being on stage. I started in theatre and OHS and then was on scholarship in my years at North Central College. I also used to play the oboe in band until my senior year of college. I guess I am a "fine arts geek!" Even though I am personally horrible at sports (I broke my nose playing softball about 10 years ago), I am a die hard Chicago White Sox fan.
