Green Roofing Systems

A green roof is a conventional roof that is covered with a layer of vegetation. Also known as “living roofs,” green roofs serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect. There are two types of green roofs: intensive roofs, which are thicker and can support a wider variety of plants but are heavier and require more maintenance, and extensive roofs, which are covered in a light layer of vegetation and are lighter than an intensive green roof. Green roofs are versatile for all building types that have a flat or low-slope roof that can support the weight of the vegetation and its support system. Important factors to consider when building a green roof are the drainage system, sun and wind exposure, and the types of plants for your climate, which can be recommended by a High Performance Roofing ltd.

What is a Building Energy Rating (BER)?

A Building Energy Rating Certificate closely resembles the energy labels provided with new domestic appliances such as fridges or clothes dryers. A sample Building Energy Rating is shown (right). Properties achieving an 'A' rating are most efficient while properties achieving a 'G' rating are least efficient.

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), Ireland's national energy agency, administers, audits and monitors the BER system. SEI also maintains a national BER register where individual BER Certificates are electronically filed and available for access by the general public when the BER number or the ESB MPRN number is known.

ZINC Natural Product

Zinc is 100% recyclable. More than 90% of zinc used in the building industry is recycled. Zinc requires minimal to no maintenance due to its naturally forming patina which is self-protecting. Zinc lends itself to both traditional and contemporary design, whether new build or refurbishment. Architects frequently comment on how well the material blends with wood, stone and concrete, whilst also providing a contrast with the plethora of glazing finishes currently available.
