Home Sweet Home

The OC Fair has called several cities in Orange County home over its 125 years. It started as a horse race with a few exhibits in Santa Ana in 1890. In 1911 it was moved to Anaheim and themed “Anaheim Carnival.” In 1917, after the Orange County Farm Bureau was formed, the Fair moved to Huntington Beach. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Fair called Santa Ana and Pomona home. In the 1940s, it returned to Anaheim and took a hiatus during World War II.

In 1949, the Fair found its current home at the former Santa Ana Army Air Base when the State of California authorized the purchase of the base to be utilized as the fairgrounds for the newly formed 32nd District Agricultural Association. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa, which included the fairgrounds, was incorporated.

Dates

The OC Fair has grown from a three-day community event to a month-long summer must-do. From 1890 through 1971, the Fair was three to six days long and was held in either fall or summer. By 1972, the Fair was a standard summer event that had extended its dates to include 10 days of activities. For the 1987 and 1988 fairs, guests could enjoy 11 consecutive days of fun and from 1989-1991, they had 12 days. From 1992 to 2002, the OC Fair hosted 17 consecutive days of events and in 2003 extended its dates to 21 days and closed on Mondays. From 2009 to this year, the Fair has been open 23 days and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

1986: An inflatable 50-foot Statue of Liberty wowed guests as President Reagan and Governor Deukmejian paid visits to the Fair.

1988: Skydivers “dropped” in on opening day.

1993: The Fair marks the 100th anniversary of the Ferris wheel with a record-breaking 38-day Ferris wheel ride.

1994: An authentic cattle drive down Fairview Road was staged with more than 125 riders and 250 head of cattle.
