Thank you for your continued support.

Together we will help keep Gwent safe.

We continue to develop our booking centre process and call centre and plan to increase capacity as supplies increase. This means we can improve the service we offer as we have noticed the lines can get very busy at times.

Appointments

If you receive an appointment, please do everything you can to attend as we are vaccinating thousands of people every week. Vaccine supplies are limited, the supply of the frozen vaccine, Pfizer is more certain but we can only offer that in our larger vaccination centres at the moment.

If your circumstances mean that you can get to a vaccination centre, we ask you to do everything you can to make it as we will not be able to offer an alternative except for those people who are housebound.

By offering the vaccine through GP practices and across our Health Board area we are doing our utmost to reduce travel time and we appreciate everyone attending their appointment.

Military Assistance

Military teams have been deployed to vaccination sites across our Health Board area to assist with the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out.

Currently working alongside Health Board vaccination staff are 12 general duties (RAF) personnel who are providing non-clinical roles within the programme (such as greeting and chaperoning patients) and three vaccinators (non-registered, but fully trained) from the Army.

The Health Board is very grateful to our military colleagues, who are supporting the vaccination roll-out.

Planned vaccine 24,000 supply for this week

This week we have a planned total supply of 24,000 vaccine doses. 72 GP Practices across the Health Board area will commence vaccinating those age 80 and over. By the end of the week we will have opened 5 vaccination centres, one in each borough.

Please remember that we are following the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) priority groups and have plans in place to vaccinate the top two priority groups in the first instance:

1. Residents in a Care Home for older adults and their carers

2. Age 80 years and over, plus front- line Health and Social Care workers.

From this week, those that fall within the third priority group;

3. All those aged 75 years and over, will start to receive invite letters for their vaccine. Please be assured that if you are aged 80 and over, and haven’t yet received an invite for your vaccine, you will receive your invitation over the next couple of weeks.

A vaccination centre will open on Monday this week in Newport, we are planning to open 7 days a week, subject to vaccine supply.

All of our vaccination centres are appointment only and people will be contacted if they are being called for their appointment.

We will continue to keep you updated, however due to a number of variable factors, such as the supply of vaccine, allocated plans can change at short notice.

Mobile Teams

The mobile vaccination teams consist of professionals with varied health care backgrounds, including pharmacists, mental health nurses, dental assistants and more.

Team Operational Manager, Angela, praised her team highly “I’m in complete awe of this team. The effort they all put in is just incredible, and they are all so determined to vaccinate as many patients as quickly and safely as they possibly can. They are volunteering to work extra hours at short notice and vaccinating staff at the end of their shifts, just because they want to help”.

This week we have a planned supply of 22,150 vaccine.

We are also opening a vaccination centre in Newbridge this weekend.

If you receive an appointment, please do everything you can to attend as we are vaccinating thousands of people every week.

Figures for the week ahead

(25th Jan - 1st Feb)

Planned vaccine 22,150 supply for this week

With the good progress being made in vaccinating those age 80 years and over during this week, our GP colleagues will complete offering vaccinations to this age group. This has enabled us to speed up the delivery of the vaccine programme. As a result, we have been able to start inviting priority group 3; those age between 75 and 79.

A Royal Thank You

The Duke of Cambridge, HRH Prince William, took the opportunity to thank Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Mass Vaccination Team this week, in a telephone call with the Programme Director, Mererid Bowley.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Assistant Director of Public Health, Mererid Bowley, represented the Mass Vaccination Team on the call, where she provided the Duke with updates on the success of the Mass Vaccination Programme. Mererid expressed her gratitude to the large team of people behind the Mass Vaccination Programme, as she told the Duke “We’re fortunate that we have an amazing team of staff, and the team go above and beyond on a daily basis to vaccinate as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Mererid praised the 300 staff members who have volunteered to work extra hours on evenings and weekends, as well as thanking our Local Authority partners who have also deployed staff to help the programme.

HRH Prince William was full of praise for the Health Board’s Mass Vaccination Team, where he ended the call by offering some words of gratitude to them. He said: “You’re doing a fantastic job, all of you.

I just wanted to say a huge congratulations to all of you and I know this has been an enormous effort for you all, even though the planning started last autumn. It’s been a huge achievement and a huge challenge to roll this out in a Pandemic when everyone’s dealing with all sorts of challenges. So, just a huge congratulations to your team for achieving such a big task and please pass on my best wishes to them.”

We continue to develop our booking centre process and call centre. We are increasing capacity to improve the service we offer.

We are aware the lines can be very busy at times.

FEBRUARY 2021

ISSUE 3: w/c 01/02/2021

We have offered vaccinations to all staff and residents from our older adult care homes that are safe to do so and those we haven’t yet been able to go to are continually being risk assessed. We have vaccinated 77.1% of people aged 80 and over and over 17,747 frontline staff, 4,314 social care workers, as well as vaccinating 12,371 people aged 75-79.

Last week we finalised plans to roll-out the vaccine to those that are housebound and eligible in line the JCVI priority groups. We will be using teams of District Nurses, GPs and mobile units. Patients will be contacted to let them know that the team are coming to give them their vaccine.

Working Together

One of the key elements in the success of rolling out such a huge vaccination programme is working with partners and their tremendous support.

Angharad Collins, CEO of Torfaen Leisure Trust, explained that they have brought in 24 volunteers, made up of a combination of staff and trustees, who have come off furlough to assist with the vaccination programme. Their help at the mass vaccination centre in Cwmbran has been invaluable. In two weeks alone they volunteered a total of 810 hours. Angharad said “We look forward to continuing to support. It has been a brilliant project to be involved in”.

Timing of second doses (difference of Oxford AstraZeneca & Pfizer)

The Mass Vaccination Programme has started the rollout of Pfizer second doses, where supply is adequate we are looking to bring the interval forward from 11-12 weeks. We are aiming to administer the Pfizer second doses to all those who received their first vaccine between December 7th and February 21st by the end of March.

For those who received the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine - the dose interval showing the highest efficacy is 12+ weeks and will be used unless there are individual clinical reasons to use a shorter interval. The programme will commence the rollout of second dose AstraZeneca appointments from March 29th.

Wales' first vaccine clinic in a mosque opens in Newport

The Jamia mosque in Newport opened its doors as a community Covid-19

vaccination centre on Tuesday (March 23rd).

The mosque was the first in Wales to be used to administer the vaccination.

The drop-in clinic for over-60s served the whole community, but it was hoped it would help to overcome any vaccine hesitancy among the city's Muslim population.

Whilst the Health Board has made every effort to contact those who fall under the relevant priority groups within these communities, there have been cases where an offer of a vaccination has not been accepted. With Clinics such as this one operating in a different environment, local people have the opportunity to receive their vaccination in an alternative, more comfortable location.

Dr Kasim Ramzen, a local GP and member of Muslim Doctors Cymru, assured patients that the vaccine was halal and having it would not break Ramadan fasts. He said having the clinic in the mosque helped to vaccinate people “we have never been able to access before".

Please be on time

Please refrain from turning up more than 5 minutes early for your vaccine appointment.

Whilst we appreciate you being punctual for your appointment, turning up too early can cause traffic congestion and queues at our vaccination centres.

If you have had your vaccination

It takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination.

It is important to continue to follow all safety guidelines to help protect yourself. We do not yet know whether the Covid-19 vaccination will stop you from catching and passing on the virus.

Drop in Vaccination Clinic Success

On Saturday 22nd May we held a pop-up vaccination session at Community House, Eton Road, Newport, targeting over 40s who hadn’t yet received their first vaccine dose. This session was hugely successful with 135 people from different communities attending to receive their vaccine. We also managed to book in anyone who attended who was under 40 at our vaccination centre at Newport Centre.

If you are over 25 years and haven’t yet come forward to receive your first vaccine, please fill in the following form:https://abuhb.nhs.wales/coronavirus/

1 million vaccinations … some dates on the journey

Not leaving anybody behind…

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board vaccination

campaign has been hugely successful, with vaccination rates to equal the best in the world. However, there are members of our community who continue to find accessing adequate levels of health care challenging. Thankfully, there are 3rd sector agencies that reach out and support these individuals to engage with our services.

Recently, we have had the privilege of working in partnership with one such partner agency - The Wallich, who work tirelessly to support homeless people. Their support in assisting the

vaccination team to vaccinate these citizens has proved invaluable.

The Wallich team have shared their specialist knowledge and skills and transported vaccinators in ‘The Wallich Bus’ to deliver vaccines wherever they are needed. We would like to thank The Wallich Team, not only for the crucial work they do every day, but also for their support in getting the vaccine to those that benefit most.

Second doses...

The 1st dose of Covid vaccine provides estimated 25-36% protection against the Delta variant, protecting against being symptomatic. The 2nd dose raises the level of protection up to 77-82%.

Therefore it is important that you receive both doses of the Covid vaccination for maximum protection.

We are currently vaccinating those aged 30-39 years with their 2nd dose and those aged 25-29 years will start to receive their 2nd dose invite over the next few weeks.

Anybody over the age of 40 years will have an 8 week interval between their vaccines.

Newbridge pupils thank staff

A group of Year 9 pupils from Newbridge Comprehensive School

formed a 3D printing group after school, as part of their Science and Technology Area of Learning. The pupils' chosen project was to design and produce thank you gifts for the staff working in the Newbridge Vaccination Centre, in the leisure centre attached to the school. They attended after school for several weeks to create their designs and put them together by the end of term. They also produced a thank you card to present with their gift.

The final design was a speech bubble, with the raised words "Thank you".

The pupils trialled several, sometimes complicated, designs and felt this simple message was what they wanted to convey. The gifts were delivered to the staff at the vaccination centre in the last week of term.

The staff were grateful for the kindness of the pupils and the thoughtfulness of their gifts.

Recently, we have had the privilege of working in partnership with one such partner agency - The Wallich, who work tirelessly to support homeless people. Their support in assisting the vaccination team to vaccinate these citizens has proved invaluable.

1 million vaccinations … some dates on the journey

AUGUST 2021

SEPTEMBER 2021 20th September 2021Issue 36 We’re delighted to announce that we’ve started the COVID-19

Booster Vaccination Programme and we’ll continue with offering first and second doses to eligible residents.

Covid-19 Autumn Booster Programme:

On Tuesday 14th September, the JCVI recommended that individuals who were eligible and received vaccination in Phase 1 of the COVID-19 vaccination programme (priority groups 1-9) should be offered a third dose COVID-19 booster vaccine with a minimum 6-month interval after the 2nd dose. An mRNA vaccine is recommended (Pfizer- BioNTech or Moderna) irrespective of which vaccine was given as a primary dose.

The priority lists include:

Those living in residential care homes for older adults

All adults aged 50 years or over

Frontline health and social care workers

All those aged 16 to 49 years with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk of severe COVID-19, and adult carers

Adult household contacts of immunosuppressed individuals

Our vaccinations teams will start to deliver booster doses to care home residents for older adults and their carers from Monday 20th September

I’m eligible, but do I really need a booster?

It is important that those eligible under the JCVI advice receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, when they are called for an appointment, as there is the possibility of reduced immunity of their previous doses over time.

The vaccine continues to be the best way to prevent serious illness and the spread of COVID- 19 and every eligible adult is urged to take-up both doses when asked and a booster dose, if eligible.

I’m eligible, how will I be called up for my vaccine?

We would like to assure our residents that we will be contacting all those eligible for vaccination to offer an appointment. We ask that you do not contact us to request an appointment, but we do ask that you ensure your details held with your GP Practice are up-to-date. We will aim to notify all individuals at least one week prior to their appointment and letters will be sent to the registered home address held with your GP.

Working in partnership with GDAS

In our approach to providing the COVID-19 vaccine for people who experience homelessness, who are vulnerable and hard to reach within our Health Board area, the GDAS team was instrumental in this partnership work. GDAS provided their bases throughout Gwent, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen, in which the vaccination team could deliver, administer the vaccine.

GDAS is trusted by their service users, they felt comfortable with familiarity of the GDAS team faces, and the place provides a sense of safety for them, where they feel welcome and accepted.

By holding walk-in clinics, we have been able to vaccinate women in refuge, the homeless, others with crippling anxiety, mental health issues, who were really nervous about attending and where trained staff have managed to explain and answer any fears, to enable the vaccine to be received.

GDAS and the vaccination team have linked in with the probation service, who have sent those in need our way.

Hostels, refuges, other organisations, such as MIND, local councils and housing have been contacted.

GDAS Assertive Outreach Team has also been pivotal in reaching out to those in the Pods or on the streets of Newport and walking them to the clinic, while the rest of the GDAS staff have taken the approach of working through their caseloads to inform service users of the clinics being held in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the GDAS team Georgina, Kate, Rondine and Martin, they have opened doors to us, given us a warm welcome and given us the opportunity to serve the seldom heard voices in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Following the recent JCVI announcement regarding the vaccination of children aged 12 to 17 who are at higher risk to COVID-19 we are working very closely with our Primary Care colleagues to ensure we identify all those who meet the necessary criteria and we will be looking to run dedicated vaccination clinics for this group from August 12th. We will be making contact with parents and/or the individual themselves over the next week to confirm details. Please make sure the contact details held with your GP are accurate and up-to-date. Getting the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and loved ones from COVID-19

Farewell Newbridge… hello Pontllanfraith!

The Mass Vaccination Centre (MVC) is finishing in Newbridge Leisure Centre this week and transferring to Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre. Patient clinics will resume from 2nd September 2021.

Since starting at Newbridge MVC on 30th January 2021, over 157,000 vaccinations have been delivered, which is a phenomenal achievement and testament to the efforts of all those involved.

The MVC has worked extremely well and has been well-received by those who have attended. We are incredibly grateful to local authority leisure staff, who have been instrumental in supporting the smooth operation at Newbridge in fulfilling car parking and meet and greet duties, and to Newbridge School who afforded us the opportunity to use the sports hall for the vaccination programme.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council in establishing the MVC in Pontllanfraith.

Nagga Boddu, a Home Carer within Fields Care Home, said “I have been working for Fields Care Home for three and a half years. I love my job and caring for the residents living here makes me proud.

When Covid-19 hit, it was very scary. I am pregnant and have a five year old daughter to think about too. For me, doing all I can to protect myself, my unborn baby, and the people I love is the biggest priority so having my covid-19 vaccine was a huge relief. We all care deeply for each resident living at Fields Care Home and so infection control in and out of work is a must. There may be some who haven’t had the vaccine, or possibly haven’t had their second dose; I would encourage them to rethink their decision, get vaccinated and help to keep everyone’s lives open.”
