In baptism, Jesus is given his public mission and ultimately, his destiny on the cross. Today’s Gos- pel should lead us to ask, then, what were you and I given in bap- tism? The most im- portant answer is re- demption, but there is much more. We were given our identity in Je- sus Christ. We were giv- en a place to belong in God’s Kingdom. We were given an indelible mark, making us mem- bers of the Body of Christ. We were given the Holy Spirit, and the gifts that He blesses us with. We were given grace! Some people ap- proach baptism for their children out of obliga- tion, but if they under- stood all that it meant, they might approach this sacrament with more enthusiasm! Jesus’
baptism signifies his deep devotion to God and His plan for Salva- tion. Take some time today to reflect on your own baptism and all that it means to you!
