How Are We Bearing Fruit?
It is great to see the flowers blooming aNer all the snow we had last winter!
For those of you who are gardeners, it must be par/cularly joy- ful. I am not a gardener, although I love the flowers that are blooming in my yard. However, I have a forsythia bush that looks very scraggly. I also have one that is turning a nice shade of yellow. The first needs pruning badly! The second over- hangs my neighbor’s driveway, so he cuts it back each year – with my blessing! In order for our plants to grow strong and trees to bear fruit, they need pruning. In order for us to grow strong in our faith, so do we! According to today’s Gospel, our pruning comes from listening to the word of God and staying connected to Jesus, the true vine. We know that we are con- nected by the way in which we live our lives. I know that I am
“preaching to the choir” when I say that being connected to the community at Mass each week is important and feeds us in two ways. We are fed on the Word and the Eucharist. These two together nourish us so that our lives are a witness to our be- liefs. They help us to know how Jesus wants us to live and love, and gives us the nourishment we need to be able to accomplish this. We are challenged every day by those who believe that violence and hatred are normal, by people who deny the very existence of God, by those who try to convince us that we, in fact, should be the god in our lives. Love in its true sense is very counter-cultural. The media would have us believe that lust is love. Jesus tells us that we must love everyone, even the most unlovable. That we should wish no one harm. That we should forgive. When we are living aGached strongly to the vine, we become living witnesses to our God who is love and our church becomes a source of peace in a troubled world.

LECTIO DIVINA LECTIO DIVINA LECTIO DIVINA LECTIO DIVINA
Lec/o Divina leads to the understanding that Jesus Christ is the heart of the Scrip- tures. In Scripture, we seek Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life. We discov- er that every word of the Bible bears wit- ness to the living Word who is Christ. And through Lec/o Divina, we enter into a hearWelt conversa/on with him. Star/ng this week, we will be mee/ng to learn about and pray 'Lec/o Divina'. Everyone is welcome to join us from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on the first and third Mondays in the rooms next to the St. Mary's Chapel.
Our next gathering is Monday, May 4. Ques/ons? Please speak with Fr. Brian.
