Scene of Dialogue Writing—Scaffold/Script

Filled Out & Agreed Upon By ALL STUDENTS 1. Record all your group members’ names at the top.

2. Create an interesting title for your scene/script.

3. List all of your characters names/roles and give a brief description of each (physical appearance/clothing, age, emotions/character traits, etc.) 4. Describe the setting of the scene (time and place).

5. State where each character is at the beginning of the scene

(onstage/offstage; location; standing/sitting; stage directions; etc.).

6. Create the interesting, realistic, believable dialogue for the scene.

o Write the character’s name first.

o Then, in the “stage directions/subtext” section, record any movement, gestures, facial expressions, character interactions, vocal emotion, etc. that the character will use during these lines.

o Repeat the previous steps when a new character speaks.

o In your dialogue/script, be sure to include an AHA MOMENT to add interest to you scene.

! Aha Moment = When suddenly a character realizes, understands or finally figures something out (i.e. life lesson)

• DIALOGUE CLUES: “Suddenly I realized”; “It just

came to me in a flash”; “I now know”; “In an instant I

saw”; “I finally understand that”; “Do you know what I

finally realized?”; etc.

o OTHER IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR DIALOGUE:

! Most people don’t speak in perfect grammar.

• People leave out words, compress phrases into single words, use contractions, interrupt each other, and talk in slang. Your dialogue should be the same.

! Remember, how a person talks depends on whom they’re talking to.

! Write dialogue in a quick fury but in editing make sure every line has a purpose.

! Follow the nonverbal communication.

• People talk with their bodies, even if they don’t mean to.

Everything from the moment they cross their arms to the quirk of their eyebrow, your characters are expressing themselves to you. Don't sacrifice these little nuances for pace. There might be something important going on with the character that you can only see during the conversation. For example, Character A keeps rolling her wrist. Why? Is that an injury or a nervous habit?

Maybe she's getting ready to hit Character B. If she is, does Character B notice and is he prepared?

! Embrace common expressions.

• There’s a reason why people use them in daily life.

They’re easy to remember and say a lot about where we live. Even characters in historical or fantastical novels would have them.

! Remember the setting.

• If the conversation is taking place in a café, then let your characters get distracted by the patrons. If they're

speaking in hushed tones behind a curtain, have a pause when they hear someone on the other side. Interruptions happen in life, they should also happen in your

fiction/scene.

7. Important Performance Reminder: Props, costumes, and scenery

are extra credit (applied to the summative performance grade).

Scene of Dialogue Writing—Prompt Ideas for Scenes of Dialogue

Note: Gender and names may be adjusted to match gender of actors and characterizations they intend to portray.

1. Jaelynn visits her favorite restaurant with her friend and they both decide to order Jaelynn’s favorite dish. Once the food comes, Jaelynn immediately notices they put extra onions on it when she specifically asked for NO onions. Her friend’s order has some issues, too. What do you say to each other? What do you say to the waiter and/or the manager? (3-4 Actors)

2. You have been going out with Jason for a month now, and he really wants you to go to his football game in Omaha this Saturday. Of course, you agree and decide to ride with him and his parents to the game. When Saturday comes, you both realize he has to ride with the team and you’ll be all alone with his parents. You’re really nervous, and his parents start to ask all sorts of questions about your life. What do they ask, and how do you respond? (3 Actors)

3. You have been going out with Madeline for a month now, and she really wants you to come play putt-putt golf with her family. You divide into pairs, and it’s just you and her dad. Putt-putt is your specialty, but you know you have to let him win. Throughout the round, you come up with excuses as to why you’re bouncing balls into the parking lot as he asks you questions about dating his daughter. What does he ask, and how will he respond to your terrible putting abilities? (2 Actors)

4. You and your BFF are standing in the halls by your locker during passing time before school. This is your daily time to catch up with all the gossip going around the school. As students walk by, you are casually talking about what they’re wearing and laughing about a teacher who was picking his nose in class yesterday. It takes you both almost three minutes to realize that teacher has been standing behind you the whole time.

What do you say to each other? What do you say to the teacher? (3 Actors)

5. You and your best friend have always done everything together. It’s like you can finish each other’s sentences. You both try out for a club team. You know you are a little better than your friend, but you’re confident you both will make the team. When the list is posted online, you both run to your computer to check the results. You’re shocked to find that your friend made the team, and you DIDN’T! You are jealous, angry, and a little depressed. Your friend, however, is jumping up and down with excitement. What do you say to each other? (2 Actors) 6. You are supposed to be taking care of your little brother while your parents are running errands. You accidentally break a glass in the kitchen, and it cuts your little brother’s foot. You don’t want your parents to think you are irresponsible, so you try to convince your little brother HE is the one that broke the glass. What does your conversation sound like, and how do you explain it to your parents when they come home? (4 Actors)

7. Your mom had to leave on a business trip, and your dad decided he would try to make your mom’s famous meatloaf while she was gone. You helped him get all the ingredients at the store, and even offered to help him make it, but he refused. It came out of the oven looking lumpy and had a green hue (color) to it. As you take your first bite you have to fight your impulse to spit it out, but then you see your dad’s smiling face across the table. He asks, “Well, is it as good as your mom’s?” How does this conversation go? (2 Actors)

8. The other day, you borrowed your sister’s new favorite shirt to wear to a sleepover with some friends. Now, she wants it back. The problem is that you left it there and your friend has no idea where it is. She asked for it already yesterday, but she doesn’t know your friend can’t find it.

What do you say to each other? What do you say to your mother when she comes into the room after hearing you shouting? (3 Actors) 9. Two teenage friends are hanging out when a parent comes home. The teen introduces the new friend to his/her parent. The parent tries to strike up a conversation with them, but their son/daughter's new friend speaks in a lot of the acronyms of text jargon or Internet slang (i.e. LOL, etc.) At first the parent pretends to understand, but then quickly shows he/she is confused and his/her son or daughter tries to "interpret" for the parent. Write a dialogue to show this situation and what happens. (3 Actors)

10. A teen, who is hoping to impress a girl/boy that he/she likes, tries a new shampoo. Unfortunately, the shampoo turns his/her hair green.

Write a scene of dialogue showing the teen's reaction when he/she realizes what happens and the reactions of some of his/her family members and/or friends. (2-4 Actors)

11. A teen has just finished a long, complicated research paper. Before he/she gets a chance to save it, the computer crashes. Write a scene of dialogue where the student is talking to the computer and what the computer would say back to him/her. (2 Actors)

12. A teen is learning to drive for the first time with his/her very nervous parent. Write a scene of dialogue that shows the mistakes of the new teen driver and the reactions of the parent as they make their way down a busy street. (2 Actors)

13. A teen is going on a blind date that was set up by a close friend. As they sit down to wait for the movie to start, the teen begins to itch nonstop due to the fact that his/her mom has just started using a new laundry detergent that he/she must be allergic to. Write a scene of dialogue that shows how the teen tries to deal with the horrible urge to scratch while trying to carry on a "normal" conversation and get to know his/her blind date. (2 Actors)

14. A shy teen goes with his/her friend into a new store in order to buy some "cool" clothes for an important dance. They run into a very pushy saleslady who practically forces the shy teen to try on some ridiculous clothes. Write a scene of dialogue that shows the interactions between the pushy saleslady, the shy teen, and the friend who is trying to be honest about the crazy clothes. (3 Actors)
