When signing up for our tournament here are some team placement considerations:
Mite Red (team comprised of a majority of experienced mite players): Teams have played 15-20 games during the season against other red level teams. They will be guaranteed 3 half-ice games based on a full Mite Red Division.
Mite White (comprised of second and third year players): Teams have played approximately 10-12 games during the season against other white level teams. They will be guaranteed 3 half-ice games based on a full Mite White Division.
Mite Blue I (comprised of first and second year players): Teams have limited game experience during the season. They will be guaranteed 3 half-ice games based on a full Mite Blue I Division.
Mite Blue II (comprised completely of first year players): Teams have little or no game experience during the season. They will be guaranteed 3 half-ice games based on a full Mite Blue II Division. You will not dress a goalie.
IP (Tyke): First-time skaters and players who have little or no experience playing hockey.
(Per USA Hockey all players are registered at their appropriate birth year. Therefore, Tyke/IP players must be 6U birth year or younger.) IP (Tykes) will play cross-ice games during a one-hour ice slot and all will receive a participation award.
A NOTE ABOUT TEAM PLACEMENTS
Our goal is to provide a great hockey tournament experience by placing teams in balanced divisions. In an effort to make that happen, we are asking you to provide four different outcomes from games against teams in the Central New York region. If your team has not played teams in the Central New York region please provide results from four teams in your region.

2022 Fire on Ice Tournament Rules
(A USA Hockey Sanctioned Tournament #NYT212231)
All games will be played under USA Hockey Rules except as stated herein:
1. To maintain the integrity of the Fire on Ice Tournament and the intent of USA Hockey, the Zero Tolerance Policy will be in effect for all games for the duration of the tournament. Any player, parent, or coach found to be in violation will be asked to leave the facility.
2. All teams must register at the tournament and provide a copy of their USA Hockey official roster.
All coaches must present a valid CEP number at registration and show photo ID. All coaches must verify their rosters prior to the first game.
3. All teams must be dressed and ready to play at least 15 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled game. Teams may dress up to 20 players: 18 skaters and 2 goalies.
4. Only coaches and players listed on the tournament roster will be allowed on the bench. There is a maximum of four coaches that will be allowed on the bench at any one time.
5. All Mite 8U games will be played half-ice and consist of three (3) twelve (12) minute running time periods. Games will be 4 on 4 plus a goalie. If circumstances require a change, it must be approved by the tournament director (ie - shortened roster due to quarantined players). Offsides and icing will not be called. The horn will be sounded each two (2) minutes to allow for player/line change.
6. All Red, White, and High Blue divisions are required to dress a goalie. The Low Blue Division will use player goalies that are not dressed in goalie gear.
7. IP (Tyke) 6U games will be played cross-ice (4 on 4 plus 1 skater in net) and will consist of three 15 minute running time periods. The horn will be sounded every 2 minutes to allow for player/line change.
Offsides and icing will not be called.
8. No time outs will be allowed during any games.
9. Overtime will not be played in preliminary rounds or consolation games.
10. Penalties will be addressed (Mite 8U only) by allowing each team to shoot on goalie per penalty at the end of the game. The goals scored during this phase of the competition are added to the third (3rd) period game score and will be counted as regulation goals.
11. Point system: A five (5) point system will be used for each game as follows: 1 point per period will be awarded to the team who wins the period; ½ point will be awarded to each team in the event that the period is tied; 2 points will be awarded to the team winning the game. In the event of a tie game, each team will be awarded 1 point for the tie.
12. Points: Teams will be re-ranked using total points in determining ranking for championship and consolation games.
Tiebreakers are as follows:
a. Most points earned during head to head competition b. Least final total goals against (GA)
c. Most final total goals for (GF) (including post regulation time penalty goals)
d. The Tournament Director, or designee, will conduct a coin toss. The team having the longest commuting distance from Cortland will call the coin toss.
e. The home team during championship and consolation games will be the team with the higher ranking.
13. Ties in the championship game will be resolved in the following manner:
a. After a three-minute break, the teams will play one six (6) minute period of sudden death overtime.
The overtime period will be 4 on 4 plus goalies.
b. Teams will proceed to a shootout with 5 players from each team alternating shots on goal. If a tie still exists, 5 different players will be selected and so on until one team wins. A player may only shoot a second time once all players (except for dressed goalies) on the bench have had an opportunity to participate in the shootout.
14. All decisions of the referees and the Tournament Director shall be final. No protest will be accepted against the official’s decisions.
15. Awards will be given at the end of each championship game. Due to ice time contractual commitments and game length, there may not be on-ice presentation of awards.
16. No noise makers please.
17. Rules may be added to comply with the Cortland County Health Department and/or the JM McDonald Center.
