Badgers
The badger is one of the UK's most recognised and popular mammals,
bringing pleasure to thousands of people and is a living symbol of the British countryside.
What Do Badgers Look Like?
Badgers are mammals that have black and white stripes along their heads.
Their bodies are covered in black and white fur. They have short legs but can run fast if they need to. They use their feet to help them dig tunnels in the dirt.
Where Do Badgers Live?
Badgers live in setts. This is an underground burrow that they dig using their claws. They live in family groups. Their burrows have long tunnels with one large room for sleeping in.
What Do Badgers Eat?
Badgers are nocturnal. This means that they hunt for food at night and sleep during the day. Badgers will eat most things but mostly like to eat worms.
They use their sharp claws to find the worms hidden in the soil. Badgers will also eat small mice, slugs, fruit and nuts.
Did you know?
Baby badgers are called cubs.
Tuesday – Read the information about giraffes and create a mind map of what you have learnt.
Giraffes
Giraffes are the tallest animals in the world. They are mammals. They can grow to over 5 metres in height, which is taller than three people! They have long legs and a very long neck. Giraffes can be easily recognised by their patterned coats. There are thought to be at least nine types of giraffes and their markings are all different. Every giraffe has a unique pattern of brown or orange patches. Wild giraffes live for about 25 years.
Habitat
Giraffes live on the grassy plains and in the open woodland of the African savannah and cope well with the hot, dry weather. However, loss of habitat is a threat facing giraffes in the wild.
Diet
Giraffes are herbivores, which means they only eat vegetation. They have a very long tongue which they use to pull leaves and twigs from trees and shrubs and guide them into their mouths. Their favourite food is the leaves of the thorny acacia tree. They spend almost all day eating and can consume as much as 45 kilogrammes of food in a day. Giraffes only need to drink once every few days as they get most of the water they need from the leaves they eat.
Predators
Giraffes can be attacked by lions, but their height and good eyesight help them to look out for danger. Other animals, such as hyenas, may attack younger giraffes. When attacked, giraffes will protect themselves. Adult giraffes have strong legs and their powerful kicks can injure predators.
Fun Facts
•Giraffes like to meet up in small groups known as ‘towers’.
•A giraffe’s tongue can be 45 – 50 centimetres long.
•Giraffes are usually silent but they can grunt, snort and even hiss.
•Male giraffes may sometimes fight one another. They use their necks and heads in battle, swinging them and striking them against their opponent.
•Female giraffes give birth standing up and a new born calf will drop about 1.5 metres to the ground when it is born.
•Wild giraffes often only sleep for about 30 minutes each day.
Giraffes
Wednesday – using the information from yesterday plan a non- chronological report about giraffes. You can draw pictures or write bullet points to help you.

Friday - Red Fox
A red fox is a well-known mammal in the UK. They have orangey-red fur with a white underbelly and on the tip of their long bushy tail (known as the brush). They also have dark brown feet and black tips on their ears. They are in the same family as dogs.
A fox can be between 62 to 72cm long with a brush as long as 40cm. The brush is important to a fox’s survival as it helps with balance, can be used as a blanket in brisk weather and can signal to other foxes.
Male foxes, known as dogs, can be heard barking but female foxes, known as vixens, make a loud howl (which can sound like a scream) as a way of talking to each other.
Foxes are omnivores: they eat small animals, birds, rats, earthworms and frogs as well as berries and fruit. They will look for food in many places, such as towns, cities and the countryside. Foxes are excellent predators but will also roam through bins for scraps of food. Foxes have been used in many stories and are usually described as cunning and crafty.
