Management

Report

For Bosch in North America, 2012 was a year of growth. While the slowdown in the global economy contributed to lower sales growth for the Group worldwide, a comparatively stable economic climate in North America helped the company achieve its highest level of sales in the region and largest level of investment in six years. Continued cost control measures and focus on its broad range of innovative and beneficial solutions will propel further growth in 2013.

Business Situation

Bosch’s global sales in fiscal year 2012 in-creased 1.9 percent to $67.5 billion. In North America, where the economy grew by 2.3 per-cent last year, Bosch regional sales grew 8.1 percent to $10.6 billion, representing 16 per-cent of global sales. The company enhanced its regional presence particularly in the auto-motive and industrial sectors, through prod-ucts that contribute toward improved energy efficiency, safety and comfort. Bosch’s world-wide workforce grew 1 percent in 2012 to 305,900, and in North America, headcount increased 9 percent to nearly 24,600 associ-ates across more than 100 locations. There are 8,800 associates in Mexico. The country generated sales of nearly $1 billion in 2012, a

robust increase of 15 percent. Approximately $750 million in sales was generated by 600 associates in Canada in 2012, an increase of 1 percent.

In 2012, Bosch globally invested some $10 billion through research and development and capital expenditure. North American invest-ments in 2012 totaled $425 million, an increase of 30 percent, including Bosch Rexroth’s $80 million expansion of its hydraulics campus in Fountain Inn, S.C., acquisition of the Service Solutions business of SPX Corporation, and expanded packaging technology activities through the acquisition of the inspection technology specialist Eisai Machinery Co. and intent to acquire a minority share of Industrial Pharmaceutical Resources Inc., a provider of control, automation, inspection and analysis products and services.

fuel efficiency and lower emissions, appears on five of the winning engines. In 2012, Bosch established Bosch Emission Systems in Kent-wood, Mich., which will provide clean diesel emission systems for an increasing number of North American applications. The establish-ment of Robert Bosch Battery Systems, which integrates the activities of Cobasys LLC in the U.S., will further intensify the company’s electromobility activities. Recognizing the emerging and inextricable links among safety, convenience and connectivity, Bosch's Chassis Systems Control and Automotive Electronics teams are leveraging current technologies to develop driver-assistance features and auto-mated driving. Driver information systems by Bosch, which combine entertainment, naviga-tion, communication and operating functions, further enable driving convenience.

Industrial Technology spurs

customer convenience and output

2012 sales in the Industrial Technology sector in North America grew by 13 percent to $1.7 billion, through robust customer solutions. Using Bosch Rexroth’s GoTo Focused Delivery program, customers can obtain product infor-mation and receive fast delivery of Rexroth’s range of most widely used products. In 2012, Bosch Rexroth completed hydraulic system solutions for the La Yesca Dam 750 megawatt

hydroelectric power station in Mexico’s federal state of Nayarit, delivering critical components that guarantee proper functioning and facility safety. By using Bosch Packaging Technology's Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper, Endangered Species Chocolate expects a more than 230 percent boost in output, enabling the customer to meet increasing demand for its premium, thoughtfully sourced chocolate bars.

Sustainability and user experience

in Consumer Goods and Building

Technology

The Consumer Goods and Building Technology sector in North America maintained its prior year level of sales at $2 billion in 2012. With the establishment of Bosch PRO Centers in 156 Home Depot stores in 2012, trained Bosch Power Tools specialists assist customers with selection and use of Bosch tools and acces-sories. Bosch completed its second-largest Praesideo system installation at the Vancouver International Airport, covering three terminals with 250 distinct paging zones. The Bosch Experience Center at Serenbe, a 1000-acre sustainable community development south of Atlanta, showcases the company’s full line of sustainable home solutions, including new Greentherm C 950 ES and C 1050 ES tankless water heaters. Internet as a driver of new products

and services

According to research firm IDC, more people in the U.S. will access the Internet using mobile devices than with PCs and other wired devices by 2015. As the world’s leading supplier of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) for consumer electronics, Bosch subsidiary Akustica introduced four new MEMS micro-phones that deliver high-definition voice quality, improving the performance of voice-enabled applications in mobile devices. Robert Bosch Healthcare Systems and GreatCall, Inc. announced a partnership to develop and mar-ket an innovative line of mobile telehealth and m-health solutions. Bosch’s Visual Rules Suite of software solutions was integrated into Green Charge Networks’ GridSynergy™ as an energy-management solution, providing utilities with real-time status updates, decision aids and recommended options for electrical load relief.

Outlook

Maintaining Bosch’s global strategy – focused diversification, high level of innovative strength and expanded regional footprint – while developing web-based business models and staying focused on systems for environmental protection, energy efficiency and safety will foster continued growth in North America. In January 2013, Bosch formed a fourth business sector, Energy and Building Technology, bring-ing together the relevant Bosch business areas, which generated sales of $6.4 billion in 2012. Bosch expects global GDP to grow 2.7 percent in 2013, and global sales growth of 2 to 4 percent. With U.S. GDP growth of 2 percent expected, coupled with a full-year effect on sales of acquired business, Bosch expects to yield close to double-digit, year-over-year growth in North America. In addition to robust development opportunities in the U.S. market, Mexico plays a vital part of the company’s regional manufacturing strategy and Canada provides a stable economic environment and further opportunities in automotive and sus-tainable energy. Longer term, Bosch in North and South America is targeted to account for more than 20 percent of the Group’s world-wide sales.

research in the fi elds of the environment, energy and mobility. Bosch Corporate Research, in collaboration with the Gasoline Systems and Automotive Electronics divisions and university and industrial partners, was awarded seven U.S. Department of Energy grants in 2012, totaling more than $11 million on topics including combustion controls, battery management systems, thermoelectric and solar energy.

A $3 million, three-year grant from the Department of Defense was awarded to Bosch for its Direct Current (DC) Microgrid Building Energy Management Platform designed to improve energy effi ciency, energy security and operating costs at the U.S. Army’s Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Through the Research and Technology Center North America, Bosch advances topics including user interaction, autonomous systems, data mining, wireless connectivity, integrated circuit design, MEMS, Internet of Things and Services, energy storage and battery management systems. There are more than 2,600 Bosch associates working in R&D in the Americas.

In 2012, the Bosch Energy Research Network (BERN) awarded seven, two-year research grants totaling nearly $1 million for projects focusing on energy conversion, energy storage and energy usage effi ciency. In addition, Bosch offered more than 20 internship positions throughout North America. Through BERN, Bosch will invest approximately $10 million over eight years, working with leading U.S. universities to accelerate

Research and

Development

Innovation is a part of Bosch’s DNA. Worldwide in 2012, the company invested more than $6 billion in R&D, with nearly half of that expenditure focused on technologies that conserve resources and protect the environment. In 2012, Bosch globally applied for 4,800 patents – or 19 patents per working day.

(17)

The Bosch Community Fund (BCF), a U.S.-based foundation established in September 2011, awards more than $3 million annually to various 501(c)(3) organizations and educational institutions. It focuses primarily on the enrichment of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and the advancement of environmental sustainability initiatives. The BCF awarded a grant to the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfi eld Hills, Mich., to establish the Bosch Young Scien-tists program. The program will augment the science education of more than 1,800 Detroit Public Schools students and provide them access to the Institute collections, personal contact with Institute scientists and educators, and core science education.

Society

Bosch has been dedicated to sustainability and corporate citizen-ship for more than 125 years. This commitment is refl ected not only through its innovative products and services but also in its philanthropic approach.

After Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of the U.S. East Coast, the BCF provided $100,000 grants to Habitat for Humanity and the United Way for Greater Lehigh Valley. Twenty-four vans fi lled with 920 heavy-duty Bosch, SKIL®, Dremel® and RotoZip® tools donated by the Power Tools division were provided to affected residents to assist with rebuilding efforts.

Other Bosch initiatives to support STEM education included sponsoring a team of 60 students at Michigan’s FIRST® Robot-ics State Championship; providing grants to high schools in Anderson, S.C., and Broadview, Ill., via the Bosch Energy, Sci-ence and Technology (BEST) program; and continuing engage-ment in the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) A World in Motion® program.
