Aboriginal Teacher
Education Program
Want to become a teacher? Through University Studies at Northern Lakes College campuses, you can complete a Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education at a campus in or close to your home community. Completing your degree at Northern Lakes College through the collabora-tive Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) is an accessible, affordable way to obtain an education degree. Complete the first two years with Northern Lakes College Univer-sity Studies and then continue with the U of A’s program for years 3 and 4, while continuing to study in or near your home. Class sizes are small, instructors are helpful and caring, and tutors are there to support your study.
Dates: Begin your Northern Lakes College studies in September 2014 in preparation for ATEP 2017. Delivery: A blend of computer conferencing (high speed internet required), self-directed study and onsite tutorial support or instructor-led, face-to-face classes.
Length: 4 years (2 in University studies and 2 to complete ATEP)
Business Administration
Have you always dreamed of owning or managing your own business? Maybe you want to work in an administrative role in business such as accounting, marketing or human resources? The Business Adminis-tration Certificate program will open up many opportunities for careers in the world of business. This one-year program will teach you valuable business skills that can be expanded upon by transferring to a Business Administration diploma program. Business topics focused on in the one-year program include accounting and bookkeeping skills, marketing principles, computer applications, business plans and proposals, human resources management theory, interpersonal communication skills, and micro-economics theory. Dates: September 2014

The instructors and students communicate orally and through text messages in real time, view slides on the computer screen, interact by using drawing tools, and surf the internet together. Addiction Services Worker
The Addiction Services Worker program takes a holistic approach that includes the belief in the inter-connection of mind, body, spirit and emotion. This program can be taken full or part-time, depending on your unique needs. When you graduate you will work with communities and organizations to set up and operate programs focused on reducing high levels of alcohol, drug and solvent abuse. You will also learn about pre-vention, intervention and aftercare. Bring a positive change in people’s lives through a fulfilling, rewarding career in the addiction services field. Academic Upgrading
This program can be taken full-time or part-time. Have you been out of school for a while? Maybe you need to refresh your academic skills? Whether you study at the Adult Basic Education or High School level, Academic Upgrading will provide you with the education you need to prepare for your high school diploma, career training or employment. $3.05 Million received for Mobile Trades Facilities
Northern Lakes College received $3.05 million from the Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education for Mobile Trades Training facilities. These mobile units will allow the college to offer various Trades programs in communities that otherwise may not have access to such facilities.

Carpenter Apprenticeship

This hands-on program will give you the skills and theory you need to succeed when you write the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training theory and practical exams. Carpenters are employed in a wide variety of industries such as residen-tial, commercial, industrial construc-tion, as well as maintenance and construction in institutional settings such as municipalities, school districts and hospitals. Crane and Hoisting
Equipment Operator -
Mobile Crane
(NEW)
Are you interested in a diverse career that services many different industries including mining, forestry, oil and gas? Mobile Crane Operators have endless career options. You could work as an employee, contractor, sub-contractor or even start your own business! Mobile Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operators service and operate the hoist and swing equipment used to move machinery, materials and other large objects. Mobile Crane Opera-tors service and operate booms that are mounted on crawlers or wheeled frames as well as traveling, fixed or climbing type hoisting equipment with a vertical mast or tower and a jib. Operators manipulate a number of pedals and levers to rotate the crane, and raise and lower its boom and one or more load lines. Some or all of these operations may be performed simultaneously. Equipment Operator -
Boom Truck
Are you interested in a diverse career that services many different industries including mining, forestry, oil and gas, as well as industrial commercial and residential construc-tion? As a Boom Truck operator you will operate and service hoisting equipment used to move machinery and other large objects. You will learn to set up, service and operate hydraulic booms mounted on turrets that are affixed to trucks capable of moving heavy loads. Preparation for entrance into health careers programs or university can begin in your community! Northern Lakes College offers pre-careers and pre-university studies courses that are accessible, affordable and convenient. Qualify for entrance into the career of your choice from your home community! Classes are small, offered at convenient times for part time study, and instructors are helpful. Tutors are there to support you. If you have dreamed of becoming an Addiction Services Worker, Practical Nurse, or a Social Worker, College and Career Preparation Program courses can get you started! Educational Assistant

Technician
Emergency Medical Services is a dynamic industry that offers exciting and rewarding careers for individuals looking to make a positive impact in people’s lives. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is a distance delivery program that offers online lectures and class discussions, combined with face-to-face onsite sessions to allow students to gain hands-on experience through labs and scenario-based training. Responder

The Emergency Medical Responder program is the first step towards a career in emergency medical services. Successful completion of the EMR program will allow graduates to work in entry-level emergency medical services positions and is also a prerequisite for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) education. This program follows all practice requirements as defined by the Alberta College of Paramedics and Alberta Health Services.

Health Care Aide
Do you want to make a difference in your community? Do you genu-inely care about helping others? Do you want a rewarding career that is in high demand? Northern Lakes College’s Health Care Aide program will prepare you for your career as a vital member of the health care team. Health Care Aides assist the profes-sional nurse in providing care to clients of all ages. They may work in acute care and continuing care settings, including long term care, home care and assisted living. The Northern Lakes College Health Care Aide program follows the 2010 Government of Alberta provincial curriculum and includes both theory and practical experiences. Health Care Aide eSTEP
If you are currently employed as a non-certified Health Care Aide and are seeking certification while you continue to work, the Northern Lakes College Health Care Aide eSTEP program is for you. The Employed Student Tutored Education Program (eSTEP) is an online, distance delivered program designed to provide the employed student with an opportunity and the support they require to gain certification as a Health Care Aide in Alberta.The student will continue to gain work experience in the clinical setting which may be eligible for practicum credits. The student will have one year to complete the program and will graduate with a Government of Alberta Health Care Aide Certificate. Dates: Students may start in any month (with the exception of July and August) if they are registered by the 20th day of the previous month. Delivery: This program is a self-study online program. The program provides tutorial support, asynchro-nous classroom discussion and online resources. The student is able to pace the program to meet their needs allowing them to balance work and other personal commitments with their study schedule.

Medical Receptionist
Train to become a knowledgeable, skilled medical receptionist at Northern Lakes College. You will learn basic communication tech-niques to greet patients, make appointments, verify insurance information and prepare and maintain patient charts. The Northern Lakes College Business Administra-tion diploma with a concentraAdministra-tion in Human Resources focuses on recruitment, retention, and the occupational health and safety of employees. There is an increasing demand on employers to interpret, understand and implement labor laws, taxation laws, human rights and employment standards issues. This program is developed to help prepare students for work in Human Resource departments and give guidance, advice and leadership around these specialized issues. The program will also help prepare students to write the national exam required to be a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP). Dates: September 2014

Health Care Aide PLAR
This is a short program of study suitable for non-certified Health Care Aides who wish to receive recognition for their knowledge and experience. Students must enroll in and complete HFDN0001- Roles and Responsibili-ties of the Health Care Aide, but can then challenge all other courses in the program (six in total). Failure to successfully challenge one of the courses will require the student to enroll in, and complete the entire course, as offered in the eSTEP program. The Health Care Aide program follows the Government of Alberta provincial curriculum. Travel to a Northern Lakes College campus will be required to complete the skills assessments. Any expenses related to required travel is the student’s responsibility. Students who are interested in this program and need additional information to determine eligibility may request a complete information package from admissions and speak to the Program Coordina-tor.
Dates: Program starts the first day of each month with the exception of July and August.
Delivery: The PLAR offering uses online and independent study, tutorial support and instructor-led, face-to-face assessments. Students may have to travel to a Northern Lakes College campus for assessment. All related expenses are the student’s responsibility.

Practical Nurse
Practical Nurses work with other health team members to provide nursing care for people in need. If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding career in a fast-paced healthcare environment, then becom-ing a Practical Nurse could be an ideal profession for you. Take this program and start your career as a highly in-demand health professional! This program follows all practical requirements as defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and Alberta Health Services. Students who would like to decrease the workload in this very intensive two-year program are encouraged to complete some of the university transfer courses before starting the program.

Delivery: This program is offered using a mix of distributed delivery strategies. These include computer conferencing, self-directed study, instructor led face-to-face classes and labs, and clinical practicums. If taken part-time, this program will take more than two years to complete.

Oilfield Operator Training
Oil and Gas production companies look for career-minded, mechanically inclined, logical thinkers with a high desire to problem solve and work independently. The Oilfield Operator Training program provides hands-on production operations, production reporting and optimization training complete with safety and environ-mental awareness. Using advanced in-house training facilities including functioning demonstration labs and process simulation software, this course will help build your confidence as you start your oilfield career as an operator. Upon completion of your training, you will receive a Northern Lakes College credential for Oilfield Operator Training and a Certificate of Achievement for Production Field Operations (PFO) from SAIT. Dates: September 2014, February 2015
Delivery: This program is offered onsite and includes classroom instruction, hands-on lab work and computer simulation. There is a one month work experience field placement.

Power Engineering

Power Engineering 3rd Class is a program of study designed for training individuals for the safe and efficient operation of industrial boilers and auxiliary equipment up to 15,000 kW. At the Third Class level, these boilers tend to be used for both heat and power applications. In Alberta, the certification of Power Engineers of all classes has been delegated to the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA). Completion of this course will help to prepare you to complete the Part A portion of the ABSA exam and will reduce the number of hours of experience necessary to write the Part B portion of the exam. For more details consult the Power Engineers’ Regulations of the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

Power Engineering

Northern Lakes College has structured the Power Engineering program to help you succeed without leaving home with recorded lectures for every chapter and proactive instructor support to help you stay on pace. The theory part of the program takes between eight and 12 months to complete depending on whether you choose to study on a full-time or part-time basis. This program is recognized by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association, the regulatory body which governs Power Engineering in Alberta. Individuals who complete the program qualify to write the ABSA Part A exam and must complete firing time to qualify for the ABSA Part B exam.
Dates: October 2014, February 2015 Delivery: Online learning program supported by recorded lectures, on-line quizzes and exams with tutorial sessions available, as required. Length: 8 months (full-time), 12 months (part-time)

Provincial Skills Canada Competition
Northern Lakes College sent two students to compete in the Provincial Skills Canada Competition. The welding and carpentry students represented the college in this competition with over 700 competitors and 10,000 spectators.
Federal Funding for Power Engineering Steam Lab
Western Economic Diversification provided Northern Lakes College with $1 million in funding to purchase specialized equipment needed to establish a new power engineering steam lab at the Peace River Campus. This new facility will provide more power engineering students with the resources they require for certification.

thClass Power Lab
The 4th Class Power Lab is a 5 week hands-on training session offered by the SAIT Energy Department at the Calgary campus. This course is approved by the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) as meeting the firing time requirement to write the ABSA Power Engineering 4th Class Part B examination. SAIT reserves several seats in the Power Lab each year for interested Northern Lakes College Power Engineering graduates. Students fill out a Northern Lakes College application form to begin the process of being registered in the Power Lab through Northern Lakes College.

Delivery: This program is offered in the Power Lab at the SAIT campus in Calgary. Delivery includes both theory and hands on practical application.

Power Engineering

Power Engineering 5th Class is a program of study designed for training individuals for the safe and efficient operation of industrial boilers and auxiliary equipment up to 3000 kW. At the Fifth Class level these boilers tend to be used for building heat applications. In Alberta, the certification of Power Engineers of all classes has been delegated to the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA). To meet Provincial require-ments an individual must: complete a Provincial exam as well as complete six months of operating experience as outlined in the Engineers’ Regula-tions of the Alberta Safety Codes Act. Dates: October 2014, November 2014, January 2015
Delivery: Online learning program supported by recorded lectures, on-line quizzes and exams with tutorial sessions available, as required. Length: 4.5 months (full-time), 9 months (part-time)
Student Wins International Business Competition
A student taking the business administration program offered in partnership with Northern Lakes College and Portage College won an international business simulation competition called GLO-BUS. This is a popular simulation in business schools. Over the past year over 34,000 students from 321 institutions have participated in the competition.

Survey Theory
and Calculation
If you are working on a survey crew and you would like to advance your career, the Survey Theory and Calculations program is for you. Learn the theory of surveying and survey calculations, any time – anywhere. Complete the nine core courses, and one of the three op-tional courses of your choice. A convenient option for advancing in an exciting industry!
Dates: This program has a continu-ous intake so students can start any time.
Delivery: This program is offered through distance delivery (print-based course materials) and exercises with online instructional videos and tutorial assistance through email or phone.
Length: Students must complete the program within three years of commencement date. Students have a maximum of three months to complete each course.

There is a real demand for skilled welders in Alberta. If you enjoy building things and working with your hands, this career may be for you! To work as a welder in Alberta, you must be a registered apprentice or a certified journeyperson. Welders have access to a wide variety of employment in Alberta in a variety of industries, such as in oil and gas, forestry, mining, manufacturing, power line and generation fields and many more. Dates:

Delivery: Traditional classroom setting with shop and lab demonstrations.

Social Work
Social Workers are trained to “help people to help themselves”. The Social Work program at Northern Lakes College looks at how to help people meet the demands of daily life. It looks at how social work seeks to improve people’s problem-solving and coping skills, and links them with systems that offer resources, services and opportunities. Themes in this two year program include competency working in different cultures, recognizing and dealing with oppression, practice in northern/ rural communities, and a focus on holistic practice. In a supportive atmosphere, students are encour-aged to develop personal insights and approach to social work practice. Students may wish to decrease the workload in this two year program by completing some of the University Studies courses before starting the Social Work program.
