5 THE CITY IN BRIEF

Venice is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry, and is the capital of the region Veneto. The name is derived from the ancient people of Veneti that inhabited the region as of 10th century B.C. The city historically was the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals”.

The city is divided into six areas or "sestiere". These are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro (including the Giudecca and Isola Sacca Fisola), Santa Croce, San Marco (including San Giorgio Maggiore) and Castello (including San Pietro di Castello and Sant'Elena). Each sestiere was administered by a procurator and his staff. These districts consist of parishes — initially seventy in 1033, but reduced under Napoleon and now numbering just thirty-eight. These parishes predate the sestieri, which were created in about 1170. Other islands of the Venetian Lagoon do not form part of any of the sestieri, having historically enjoyed a considerable degree of autonomy. Each sestiere has its own house numbering system. Each house has a unique number in the district, from one to several

6 thousand, generally numbered from one corner of the area to another. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.

The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several

important artistic movements, especially the

Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

8 After 1100 years, the Republic lost independence when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Venice on 12 May 1797 during the First Coalition. The French conqueror brought to an end the most fascinating century of its history: during the 18th century Venice became perhaps the most elegant and refined city in Europe, greatly influencing art, architecture and literature. Napoleon was seen as something of a liberator by the city's Jewish population.

Venice became Austrian territory when Napoleon signed the Treaty of Campo Formio on October 1797. The Austrians took control of the city on 18 January 1798. It was taken from Austria in 1805 and became part of Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy, but was returned to Austria following Napoleon's defeat in 1814, when it became part of the Austrian-held Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. In 1848-1849 a revolt briefly reestablished the Venetian Republic under Daniele Manin. In 1866, following the Third Italian War of Independence, Venice, along with the rest of the Veneto, became part of the newly created Kingdom of Italy.

9 During the 20th century, when many artesian wells were sunk into the periphery of the lagoon to draw water for local industry, Venice began to subside. It was realised that extraction of water from the aquifer was the cause. The sinking has slowed markedly since artesian wells were banned in the 1960s. However, the city is still threatened by more frequent low-level floods (called Acqua alta, "high water") that creep to a height of several centimetres over its quays, regularly following certain tides pushing in between autumn and early srping.

Venice is one of the most important tourist destinations in the world, due to the city's being one of the world's greatest and most beautiful cities of art. The city has an average of 50,000 tourists a day.

Tourism has been a major sector of Venetian industry since the 18th century, when it was a major center for the grand tour, due to its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness, and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. In the 19th century, it became a fashionable centre for the rich and famous. It continued being a fashionable city in vogue right into the early 20th century. In the 1980s, the Carnival of Venice was revived and the city has become a major centre of international conferences and festivals, such as the

10 prestigious Venice Biennale and the Venice Film Festival at the Lido, which attract visitors from all over the world for their theatrical, cultural, cinematic, artistic, and musical productions.

11 There are numerous attractions in Venice, such as St Mark's Basilica, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco, to name a few. The city also relies heavily on the cruise business. Venice's popularity as a major worldwide tourist destination has become widely known for its element of elegant decay.

Florence is an important university center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and is universally recognized as one of the cradles of art and architecture, and renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, thanks with its important monuments and museums - including the Duomo, Santa Croce, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Pitti. The heart of Florence is Piazza della Signoria, with its majestic Palazzo Vecchio, with a gallery of masterpieces of sculpture in the Loggia dei Lanzi, and the nearby Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the most famous art museums in the world. Not far away is the religious center of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with its majestic dome (the largest ever built) that at the time of the Grand Duchy, it was said that with his shadow reached to cover the whole of Tuscany, the enormous Cathedral is beautifully accompanied by the Bell Tower, one of the most beautiful in Italy, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni, with its famous bronze doors amongst these is the golden gate of heaven.

16 In addition to the Uffizi, Florence has other museums which would be the main artistic attraction than any other major city in the world: the Accademia Gallery, the Bargello and the Pitti Palace with its eight museums, including the Palatine Gallery. The Florentines boast of possessing the best example of beauty in both women (of Botticelli's Venus) and male (The David of Michelangelo).

There are numerous literary ideas throughout the city: the neighborhoods of the tower houses, where the tombstones recall the verses that these places inspired by Dante Alighieri, the serenity of the Medici villas, where they often met the Platonic Academy of Lorenzo the Magnificent, up to the theaters to the Pergola and the Boboli Gardens, where they were staged for the first time melodramas that led to opera. Florence as the "cradle of the Renaissance" has its masterpieces in the works of Filippo Brunelleschi (the Hospital of the Innocents, the church of San Lorenzo and Santo Spirito) and Leon Battista Alberti (the facade of Santa Maria Novella and the Palazzo Rucellai) but other periods have left their artistic masterpieces: the Romanesque San Miniato al Monte, the Gothic Santa Croce (where are the graves of the Italic glories, as defined Ugo Foscolo, he also buried there), the vagaries of Giambologna's Mannerist

Rome stands on the banks of the river Tiber, the original settlement developed on hills facing the bight in which lies the Tiber Island, the only natural ford of the River. Rome is the result of the continuous overlapping of architectural and urban planning in different centuries, in a unique and fascinating intermingling that shows the complex relationship that the city has established with its own past, a succession of developments in chaotic periods of decline , revivals and efforts, in contemporary times, the modernization of the urban fabric. More than 16% of world cultural heritage are in Rome.

The religious architecture in Rome are an essential part of the capital city of monuments: they are the symbol of the cultural, social, religious and artistic component of the entire span of Roman history. The most important sacred buildings of antiquity were the temples were not places of gathering for the faithful, but only houses the image of the deity whose worship was dedicated. It is believed that in late Republican Rome had about a hundred temples. The Christian churches are several hundred and their history is intertwined with the history of religious, social and artistic city. The cathedral is the Basilica of San

22 Giovanni in Laterano, one of the four patriarchal basilicas or together with the papal basilica of St. Peter, the Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls and the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The four churches were part of the so-called "tour of the seven churches" that were supposed to carry the pilgrims on foot and in a single day. The other three churches are part of this route are the basilica of San Lorenzo outside the walls, the basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and the Basilica of St. Sebastian outside the walls. Piazza del Campidoglio Palace is home to the Senators, representative office of the municipality of Rome and the palace of the Conservatives and the New Palace, headquarters of the Capitoline Museums. Many historic buildings in the city, the seat of noble families, cardinals and papal who exercised his power in Rome, among them, Palazzo Venezia, Palazzo Farnese, Palazzo Barberini and the Palazzo Colonna. It characterizes the city center as well as some ancient triumphal arches (Arch of Titus, Arch of Septimius Severus, Arch of Constantine) and the remains of many spas, one of the main venues throughout antiquity (including the Baths of Caracalla, the Baths of Diocletian and the Baths of Titus). Among the main streets of the city center, via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Ripetta, which form the Trident, Via dei Fori Imperiali, via the Empire already, Via Veneto, made famous in the sixties, Via dei Condotti, the main shopping street, Via Margutta, the artists' street, Via Nazionale, made after the unit, because of Reconciliation, linking the Italian with the Vatican City.
