George Buehl, a mechanical designer with MTS Systems since 1976, spent his childhood years growing up in Mound, Minnesota. Later in his life, he found that “Mound” took on a whole new meaning.
“When I was a child attending Shirley Hills Elementary School, one of my school teachers took the class on a walk to visit the large burial mound that adjoins the school property on the east side,” George said. “ Since that day, I have had a fascination with burial mounds. It seems that any time I discuss burial mounds with anyone from the Mound area, they almost always say: “I have wondered where all the mounds in Mound are located.”
George has been researching Native American Indian burial grounds for the past several years. He acquired a large amount of information pointing to the Native American Indian mounds in the Lake Minnetonka area.
“At some point, I realized that I had enough bits of information to understand fully where some of these mounds might be located, and I had the software tools I needed to put it all together.”
George now has an exhibit at the Westonka History Museum created by the 3D printer at MTS System. It shows all of the burial mounds in the Malmsten Mound group near Halstead Bay on Lake Minnetonka, super-imposed onto today’s topography.
George immersed himself in historical maps and records on the internet, a book called The Aborigines of Minnesota, LIDAR files from the State of
Minnesota, LAStools software, FugroViewer software, the CAD software he uses at MTS (SolidWorks); various published archaeological reports displayed on the internet, on-line newspaper articles and discussions with others who share his interest.

“With this museum exhibit, George saw a valuable need to inform and educate the public of these sacred historical sites and he selflessly devoted years studying and compiling research, “ said Doug Stuyvenberg, George’s supervisor.
In August 2014, George visited the Westonka Historical Society Museum where he asked one of the tour guides, Vern Brandenburg, if anyone there had an interest in Mound’s burial mounds. “ I got very lucky,” George said. The tour guide grew up within the 21HE64 burial mounds’ boundaries. “ As we were discussing these mounds, Vern shared with me that when he was 14 years old, in the summer of 1947, there was an excavation of one of the mounds by the State of Minnesota. He went there daily to witness the excavation. I then shared with him an excavation report I had previously found in the publication Burial Mounds of Central Minnesota.
We determined that it was indeed Mound No. 59 that was excavated in Vern’s presence.” Vern then took George to the place where the mound once was, and showed him the actual location of Mound No. 59. “I now had enough information to create this exhibit, “George said.
The resulting exhibit shows the 69 Halstead Bay Mounds (also known as the Malmsten Mounds - 21He64). Check out the exhibit at the Westonka History Museum, which is open on Saturdays, 10am - 2pm, and by appointment.
A booklet has been created by George, to accompany the 3D - printed model exhibit. This booklet contains historical backg round information on the mound group, various maps with the burial mounds super - imposed, newspaper articles of the past, and mound excavation reports. To view this booklet, see the “History” section on the City of Minnetrista’s web site.

In recent weeks, several WHS board members have decided that, for personal reasons, they need to retire from their duties as board members. We will miss their leadership and diligence. They have helped to shepherd WHS from a one-room storefront, through storage, to our current location, now in its second year.
T h e s e c h a n g e s b r i n g opportunities for WHS members, o l d a n d n e w, t o c o n s i d e r volunteering for the society and/or the museum in new ways. Please think about how you can help steer our org anization in a good direction, and contact WHS at 952-472-9800 or via website email .
Je a n n e B r u s t a d , b o a r d
member since 2004, retired from her position on the WHS board in August. She has been pivotal in producing 10 years of newsletters, following work of Carol Senn and others, creating our website and Facebook page, and managing both t h e W H S m e m b e r s h i p l i s t following Lavonne Adams, and the myriad of details for years of fundraisers. That sentence barely touches the hours she has devoted to make WHS and the history museum the success it is today. Her networking connected WHS with the community, from 6th grade
teachers creating an annual visit to the history museum, and to the Gillespie Center as a partner in events. Her energy and enthusiasm will be missed.
David Cross, board member
since 2009, retired from his position on the WHS board in September. He served for several years as WHS treasurer, following Phyllis O’Malley. He created format and documents which led us through the changes from shared space, to storage rental, to sub-leasing one-room, and finally to a lease with the city of Mound. His knowledge of state and other historical and genealogical societies guided development of WHS policies and procedures. His care and conscientiousness will be missed.
Volunteers are need to fill the voids created by these changes. Some individuals have stepped forward, but more help is needed. As we work to implement changes in duties, your input is needed. What should WHS be doing to be the most successful it can be in preserving local history and making connections with our community?
