Time Capsule, Part 2!

Last week, I shared excerpts from Justin Martyr’s First Apology (defense), in which he sought to explain and defend Christianity to the Roman emperor in the middle of the second century. His description of Christian worship in his day is remarkable: we can clearly recognize the Mass, with what we would call the Liturgy of the Word followed by the Liturgy of the Eucharist! There is even a collection for the poor, and the deacons bringing the Eucharist afterwards to those who are too sick to come to worship.

He pauses in the midst of his summary to speak in detail about their beliefs about this bread and wine which has been prayed over by the president (Justin’s way of referring to the priest). Below is his description, with my commentary in brackets afterwards.

“And this food is called among us Eukaristia [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.” [This is still true today: because the Eucharist is truly Jesus and not just a symbol, one has to 1) believe in the Catholic faith, 2) be baptized, and 3) be living in a moral manner and in a state of grace.]

“For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Savior, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” [This is pretty astonishing: Justin is saying that just as Jesus was truly man, so is this bread truly his flesh!]

“For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said, ‘This do in remembrance of me, this is my body,’ and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks, He said, ‘This is my blood,’ and gave it to them alone.” [Justin ties the Eucharist back to the apostles, who received it from Jesus at the Last Supper.]
