After completion of your PN education, the Associate
Degree Nursing Mobility Program may be right for you!
THANK YOU...
for your interest in our AD Mobility Nursing Program.
Whether you are working as a Licensed Practical Nurse or completing a PN program, all the
rewards of caring for people will confirm that you made the right choice in the nursing
profession. Moving from LPN to RN may bring you more responsibility and higher pay if you
are ready for that.
Our unique program enables LPN’s in the region to become RN’s in just two to three semesters
(after completion of AD Mobility Nursing Program and successful licensure examination
(NCLEX-RN)). By reaching out to area communities, we’ve helped hundreds of nurses realize
their career goals through greater education.
APROVED PROGRAM: Our AD Mobility Nursing Program has been approved by the
Minnesota Board of Nursing since 1978.
NATIONAL ACCREDITATION: The AD Mobility Nursing Program is nationally accredited
by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Initial accreditation was

Why choose Northland Community & Technical College’s nursing
program?
We Build on What You Already Know
Northland Community and Technical College and several other Minnesota schools that offer
nursing degrees have made your credits fully transferable among them. This makes it easy for
LPN’s to move on to the Associate Degree Nursing Program. If desired, students may then
continue on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing and even a Master’s Degree in
nursing.
Ability to Transfer
Northland Community and Technical College works collaboratively with Bemidji State
University, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and the
University of North Dakota to facilitate transfer into their Bachelor of Science nursing programs.
Convenience
The core nursing and science classes are offered at Northland Community and Technical College
through both the Thief River Falls and East Grand Forks campus sites. Classes are typically
offered in a block schedule. Clinical sites may be offered in Crookston, Grand Forks, Fosston,
and Thief River Falls.

AD Nursing Course Schedules
The AD nursing program admits students fall semester and spring semester of each year.
Students accepted into the spring part-time program actually have an “early” start since 5
of the nursing credits are taken spring semester instead of the fall semester. This is a nice
option for those who continue to work while attending the program.
Both groups graduate together in May of the following year.
Our courses are “block” scheduled to facilitate less travel time for our students.
The following are the nursing courses that are required. If you need to fulfill any of your
general education courses, those are in addition to the nursing courses.

Admission Procedure
A. Apply to Northland Community and Technical College:
If you have never been a student at Northland Community and Technical College, then you must apply to Northland College before completing the application to the AD Mobility nursing program. B. Apply to the AD Mobility Nursing Program:
Once a student has been accepted to the college, he/she can then apply as a candidate for the AD Mobility Nursing Program. Applications must be received by February 28 to be considered for priority admission for the fall full time program and by September 30 to be considered for priority admission to the spring part-time program. Students applying for admission to the AD Mobility Nursing Program are chosen competitively.
C. GPA Requirement:
To be eligible for the AD Mobility Nursing Program a student must have a total cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (this includes not only courses taken at NCTC but courses taken at all previous colleges as well).
A student must be in good academic standing which means the student has successfully completed a minimum of 67% of cumulative attempted credits. Credits for which a grade of “W” is received are considered attempted credits but not successfully completed for the purpose of monitoring
satisfactory academic progress. A “W” does not impact GPA, but does negatively impact the cumulative completion percentage. Students on academic probation or academic suspension will not be eligible for the AD-Mobility Nursing Program.
D. Current LPN Licensure:
All students must maintain a current Practical Nursing license.
New PN graduates that graduate the month prior to the start of the AD Mobility Nursing Program have 6 weeks from the start of the semester to obtain their licensure.
All students must maintain a current practical nursing license from either the United States or Canada throughout the program. Should an LPN’s license become encumbered, suspended, or revoked while enrolled in NCTC’s nursing program, that student may be barred from clinical nursing courses contingent upon the nature of the encumbrance and NCTC’s nursing resources to supervise the student.
E. Advanced IV Therapy:
An Intravenous Therapy Course documented on a transcript. PNSG 1232 Advanced IV Therapy (1 credit) OR
A certification of completion of an approved state board of nursing IV course OR documentation from an employer that the student is competent in IV technical skills.
F. Current CPR certification:
Proof of current CPR certification including infant, child, adult, one person, and two person CPR is required prior to all clinical courses. Accepted certifications include CPR for the Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association OR CPR for the Professional Rescuer by the Red Cross.
G. Background Study:
Completion of the Minnesota Department of Human Services Licensing Division Background Study and the National Background Study by Verified after acceptance to the program.
H. Health Screening Database:
Students are required to provide dates of current immunization against certain vaccine preventable diseases, and date and results of current tuberculosis (TB) screening on the Health Screening Form before the student is eligible to participate in clinical training, unless an exception applies. Requests for exemption from these requirements are sent to the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
I. AD Math Entrance Exam:
Nursing students must pass a Nursing Application Math Competency exam by 80% prior to being accepted into the AD Mobility Nursing Program. Students who do not pass the math competency exam will not be eligible for acceptance into the program.
As a program, we understand how vitally important it is for registered nurses to be able to perform critical thinking as it relates to administration of medications. An extremely important component of this process is accurately determining medication dosages. To assure safety to the clients, the student is required to pass an AD Math Entrance Exam before application to the program will be considered.
o The student will register for NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam. If the registration
window is closed, the student may contact the Nursing Department - Administrative Assistant on the EGF or the TRF campus to register for NURS 0002. NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam is 0 credits and $0 charge. Students may only register for the NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam course once per year.
o The NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam Course will be available in D2L (Desire 2 Learn Information Management System) 24 hours after registration for the course is completed. Students will have access to the course for 12 months from the end of the term of registration (Example: Fall 2010 course will be open until December 31, 2011. Example: Spring 2011 course will be open until May 31, 2012).
o The COURSE CONTENT in D2L will include the following materials: A practice workbook, lectures, and power-points. The Math Entrance Exam is accessed through the D2L course in a proctored environment. Exam schedules can be found at the nursing website at www.northlandcollege.edu/nursing.
The student is allowed three attempts per year to successfully pass the math entrance exam. Exam results are valid for AD Mobility Nursing Program admission for 3 years.
If a student is NOT successful after three attempts to pass the math entrance exam, the student has two choices.
1. Take MATH 1003 Math Applications for Nurses Course (1 credit). The final exam for this course is the math entrance exam.
properly stored.
o The student will submit the exam electronically.
o Results of examination will be provided immediately upon submission. o Passing score is 80% or 24/30.
The Importance of Math Continues in the AD Mobility Nursing Program:
Your math entrance examination assures the Nursing Department that you have a minimal level of nursing math knowledge to enter the program. Math will be reinforced, however, throughout our program in
o NURS 2110 Health Assessment & Professional Skills (you will be required to determine drug dosages in a simulated test out situation).
o NURS 2125 Clinical I: The student will be required to pass a 10 point proctored math exam with 100% accuracy to pass Clinical I (you will have 3 attempts to pass). o NURS 2135 Clinical II: The student will be required to pass a10 point proctored math
exam with 100% accuracy to pass Clinical II (you will have 3 attempts to pass). III. Competitive Admission Procedure
Students applying for admission to the AD Mobility Nursing Program are chosen competitively. Before a student completes the application to the AD Mobility Nursing Program, the student must apply to be accepted as a student to Northland Community and Technical College.
Once a student has been accepted to the college, he/she can then apply as a candidate for the AD Mobility Nursing Program itself. Students are chosen competitively based on a passing score on the AD Entrance Math Exam, grades previously achieved in the required pre/co-requisite sciences and the number of completed co-requisites taken prior to the selection process.
Research has shown that success in professional nursing programs is directly correlated to GPA in the sciences. Table 1 shows how the competitive point system is determined. The cut off point for the selection process is determined by the number of applicants and their points achieved. It may be higher or lower depending upon the applicant pool. Typical minimum points required for admission is 13. If a tie occurs, priority selection will be given to the candidates according to the date of completion of the application to the AD Mobility Nursing Program.
Actual selection to the AD Mobility Nursing Program is determined by a Selection Committee that consists of the AD Nursing Director, a nursing faculty member, a faculty member from the science department, and personnel from student service. The selection committee reviews each applicant and verifies the scores before selection is made.
Application deadline is September 30th for spring start, and February 28th for the fall start. Students will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance into the program by October 31st for the spring start, and March 31st for the fall start.
