I. REGISTERING FOR CLASSES
General Information
Preference for Certain Courses with Limited Enrollments
For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Negotiation, Pretrial Advocacy and Trial Advocacy courses, enrollment preference will be given to those students who expect to complete graduation re-quirements in May 2015 or August 2015. In addition, one quarter of the spaces in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Negotiation are reserved for LL.M. students. Any spaces that remain available in these classes will be open to all other eligible students.
A student who registers for one of these courses but is not in one of the preference groups will be placed initially on the waiting list.
Full Classes
When a Law School class is closed because it has reached its enrollment limit an error message stating “Department Approval” will appear when a student attempts to register for the class. To have your name placed on the waiting list for the class, send a request from your WSU e-mail account to [email protected]. Include your name, AccessID number, and the name of the course. Students will be contacted via their Wayne e-mail addresses if an opening becomes available.
Veterans
After registering, a veteran who wishes to receive benefits during the term must complete a re-quest for enrollment certification at the University Office of Military and Veterans Education Bene-fits, which is located in the Undergraduate Library, Room 1656. For veterans’ beneBene-fits, eight credit-hours per term is considered full-time in the J.D. program.
Dropping or Withdrawing from Courses
Non-required courses. A student may drop a non-required course at any time up to the day of the
first examination, series of examinations, or due date for a research paper in the course that amounts to 20 percent or more of the final grade. Courses with a take-home examination must be dropped before the first day the examination is distributed. After this date, a student may
withdraw only with the permission of the instructor and Associate Dean for Student Affairs Noah Hall.
Required courses. Permission to drop a first-year required course must be obtained from
Asso-ciate Dean for Student Affairs Noah Hall up to the day of any midterm or other examination for credit, and thereafter by permission of both the instructor and Dean Hall.
If a student drops or withdraws from a course it will not count toward the student’s residency re-quirement, and the student will not receive course credit for it. Once a course is completed and the student has received a final grade it may not be dropped.
To drop or withdraw from a course students must use the Academica system. If you need help dropping a course, send a request from your WSU e-mail account to [email protected]
with the appropriate course information.
If a student does not drop or withdraw from a course, and does not complete the course require-ments, the student will receive a grade of F for the course.
The last date to drop a winter semester course and receive tuition cancellation is Monday, Janu-ary 26, 2015.
Registration Fee
If a student drops all classes during the priority registration period, the student will not have to pay a registration fee. If a student registers for only one class and the class is cancelled by the Uni-versity, the registration fee will automatically be removed. For all other complete withdrawals processed, the registration fee is non-refundable.
Ineligibility to Use the Online Registration System
A student will not be permitted to register, add, or drop a course using the online registration sys-tem if:
The student has an academic or financial hold or has been academically dismissed. The student has not been admitted to the University for Winter Term 2015.
The student has not registered for several years and has not had his or her records reac-tivated.
Externships and Clinics
Externship and clinical courses are open only to students who have completed all required first-year courses and have a grade-point average of at least 2.0. To register for an externship course a student must have the prior approval of D’lorah Hughes, Director of Externship Programs ([email protected].) LL.M. students with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and the equiva-lent of the first-year courses may also enroll in externship courses related to their concentration.
Maximum Credit Hours per Semester
Students may enroll in a maximum 16 credit hours during one semester. If a student wishes to take more than 16 credit hours, the student must have the approval of Associate Dean for Stu-dent Affairs Noah Hall.

As part of a program for pooling resources in the field of intellectual property law, intellectual property courses taught at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and the University of Windsor Faculty of Law are open to Wayne Law students, who can register for these courses and pay tuition rates charged by Wayne State University.
Registration is subject to the same conditions that apply to Wayne Law students whenever they sign up for a course at another law school: the course must be unavailable at Wayne, or you must receive approval of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Noah Hall, and you will receive credit (but not the grade itself) only for a grade of “C” or better.
If you have any questions concerning the courses at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law please call (313) 596-0259. For the University of Windsor Faculty of Law call (519) 253-4232 ext. 2931.
A list of courses offered for the 2014-15 academic year at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and the University of Windsor Faculty of Law in the IPLI program is posted on the Records and Registration Office page of the Law School website. To register, fill out the form available on the same webpage.
Requirements for a J.D. Degree
Students should consult Section I of the Law School Academic Regulations for a list of the re-quirements for the J.D. degree. The rere-quirements of which you should be particularly aware when registering for classes include:
Total credits required. Students must complete 86 credit hours with a cumulative
grade-point average of 2.0 or better.
Required upperclass courses. In addition to the required first-year courses, students
must successfully complete Professional Responsibility and the Legal Profession. Upperclass writing requirement. To satisfy the upperclass writing requirement students
must participate in a class or activity offering a rigorous writing experience after the first year. Qualifying activities include Criminal Appellate Practice, Advanced Legal Writing: Appellate Advocacy (formerly Legal Writing: Advanced), a directed study paper, and participation on Wayne Law Review, the Journal of Law in Society, or Moot Court. A
student may also satisfy the requirement by taking any other course, clinic, workshop, or seminar with a substantial writing requirement, but only if the student submits to the Records Office a certificate, signed by the student and by the applicable full-time mem-ber of the faculty, certifying that the activity will meet the requirement. The certificate must be filed by Monday, February 23, 2015. It is available from the Records and Reg-istration Office page of the Law School’s website. Additionally, a form is required if a student meets this requirement by participating in Wayne Law Review, the Journal of Law in Society, or Moot Court. The form is due by the last day of classes in the Winter 2015 term if a student chooses to meet the requirement with one of these activities. Professional skills requirement. Students who started at the Law School in the Fall 2005
semester or later must complete the professional skills requirement by taking a curricu-lar offering of two or more credits that provides substantial instruction in professional skills beyond traditional legal research, writing, and analysis. Students entering Fall 2013 or thereafter are required to take 6 credits of professional skills courses, of which at least 3 credits must be an externship, internship or clinic. The courses that meet this requirement are:
Clinics: Asylum & Immigration Law Clinic, Business and Community Law Clinic, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Clinic, Criminal Appellate Practice Clinic, Disability Law Clinic, Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic, Patent Procurement Clinic, Practicum in Dispute Resolution, Transnational Environ-mental Law Clinic.
Internships: Criminal Justice Internship, Government Agency Internship, In-House Counsel Internship, Judicial Internship, and Public Interest Internship. Externships: Criminal Justice Externship: Colloquium, Criminal Justice
Ex-ternship: Practicum, Judicial ExEx-ternship: Colloquium, Judicial ExEx-ternship: Practicum, Public Interest Externship: Colloquium, and Public Interest Extern-ship: Practicum.
Courses & Seminars: Advanced Corporate Tax Problems, Business Plan-ning, Business Planning: A Transactional Approach, Contract Drafting Semi-nar, Criminal Pretrial Advocacy, Effective Oral Communication for Lawyers Seminar, Negotiation, Patent Application Preparation, Patent Prosecution, Pretrial Advocacy, and Trial Advocacy.
Courses that satisfy the Professional Skills requirement are marked with [PS] in the Schedule of Classes. You may not use the same course, seminar, or clinic to satisfy both the upperclass writing requirement and the professional skills requirement. Residence credit requirement. Students must complete three years in residence. A
of residence credit. A student who completes fewer than 10 credits in a semester will receive residence credit based on the ratio of the number of credits hours completed and 10 credit hours. A student may not earn more than one-half year of residence credit during one semester, and credit hours earned in one semester cannot be applied to res-idence credit in any other semester.
Time limit for completing graduation requirements. While transfer between programs is
possible, a J.D. student who enters the Law School as a full-time student must complete the requirement for the J.D. degree within five years of starting the program, and a stu-dent who enters as a part-time stustu-dent must complete the requirements within six years. Limitation on clinical, externship and internship courses. A student may submit no more
than 14 semester credits from clinics, externships and internships toward completion of degree requirements. A student may register for no more than one externship or clinic per semester, and may not register for both an externship and a clinic in the same se-mester. A student who has taken a clinic may not register for another (other than an ad-vanced version of the same clinic) unless positions remain available two weeks after the Law School’s registration period begins or one month before the semester begins, whichever occurs later.
The above represents only a summary of the requirements for graduation. To be sure you un-derstand all of the requirements you should carefully consult the Law School Academic Regula-tions.
Seminars and Directed Study
Students may register for one seminar or one 1- or 2-credit-hour directed study each term. No more than four semester credits of directed study may be submitted toward completion of gradua-tion requirements. A student may not elect a directed study if you are eligible to elect a seminar during the same academic year that covers the same general subject matter on which you wish to write. A student may not elect a directed study and a seminar in the same term; nor may a stu-dent elect two directed studies or two seminars in one term. For directed study, written approval of the professor guiding the study and of Associate Dean for Student Affairs Noah Hall must be obtained prior to registration. The Authorization for Directed Study form is available from the Records and Registration Office page of the Law School’s website.
Work for seminars and directed studies must be completed within the regular examination grad-ing period for that term, or by the deadline set by the professor if sooner. If the work is not hand-ed in within that period, the student must withdraw from the seminar or directhand-ed study or will re-ceive a grade of “W”. An “Incomplete” will not be allowed for late submission of papers.
Graduate-Level Courses Outside the Law School
Following completion of the first year, a student may elect one law-related course at the graduate level in another department of the University each term, with a limit of four such courses. To elect such a course you must obtain prior approval from Associate Dean for Student Affairs Noah Hall. To earn Law School credit a student must receive a grade of “B” or better. Grades received in non-Law School courses will not be included in computing your grade-point average, and will be recorded on your transcript as “CR” (credit).
If a student takes a University graduate level course the student may not elect a Law School course on a Pass/No Credit basis during that term.
The University’s calendar is different from the Law School’s calendar, and students must abide by all rules and regulations stated in the University Schedule of Classes when electing a course out-side of the Law School. You can find a copy of the University schedule on the web at
http://www.classschedule.wayne.edu.
Programs at Other Law Schools
To take a course at another law school and receive credit toward your Wayne Law degree a stu-dent must obtain prior approval from Associate Dean for Stustu-dent Affairs Noah Hall.
To earn Law School credit a student must receive a grade of “C” or better. Students will not re-ceive credit for courses graded Pass, Credit, or Satisfactory. Grades rere-ceived in courses taken at another law school will not be included in computing a student’s grade-point average, and will be recorded on the student’s transcript as “Transfer Credit.”
After a student has completed a course at another law school, it is the responsibility of that stu-dent to have the guest institution send an official transcript directly to the Law School Records Office in order to receive credit.
Election of Pass-No Credit Grading
In any single term or summer session after your first year in the Law School, a J.D. student may elect to take one non-required course on a Pass-No Credit basis. Taking a course in another University division precludes election of another course on a Pass-No Credit basis during that term. Seminars and directed studies may not be taken on a Pass-No Credit basis, nor may Ad-vanced Legal Writing: Appellate Advocacy (LEX 7536).
Up to four courses passed on this basis at the Law School may be credited for residence and hours toward graduation, but will not be included in determining your grade-point average. The course instructor will not be made aware of the student’s election of Pass-No Credit grading. The Law School Records Office, upon receipt of the student’s final grade in the course, will enter an “A+” through “C” as a “P” (pass) and a “C-“ through “F” as a “NC” (no credit) in the student’s record as the official grade in the course.
Notice of such election for the Winter Term 2015 must be filed in the Law School Records Office by 5:00 pm, Monday, February 23, 2015. Effective as of the Summer 2012 semester, a student who has elected to take a course on a Pass-No Credit basis may rescind that election no later than three days after the Records Office posts the student’s final grade for that course in Black-board and may thereby take the assigned letter grade in lieu of the “Pass” or “No Credit.” A Pass-No Credit election cannot be made online.
A student may make a Pass-No Credit election by completing the Election of Pass-No Credit Grading Form and bringing it to the Records Office or faxing it to (313) 577-9800. The form is available from the Records and Registration Office page of the Law School’s website.

Students on Academic Probation
A student who (1) has a cumulative average below 1.67 at the end of the 2013-14 academic year or (2) was on probation during the 2013-14 academic year and did not maintain a 2.0 average during that year may not register for classes unless readmitted by the Readmission Committee.
A student on probation or one who needs special permission to take classes should contact As-sociate Dean for Student Affairs Noah Hall prior to registering.

Program De-gree Requirements and Academic Regulations, which is available from Prof. Paul Dubinsky, Di-rector of Graduate Studies, his secretary Olive Hyman, and on the Law School’s website.
A grade-point average of 2.33 or higher is required for graduation for the LL.M. Degree in Taxa-tion, Labor and Employment, and Corporate and Finance. A grade-point average of 3.0 or higher is required for graduation for the LL.M. Degree in United States Law.
An LL.M. student who earns a C-, D+, D or E in a course will have the mark of F entered on his/her record.
Students who have completed all of the requirements for an LL.M. degree except the master’s thesis must register for Master’s Essay Direction (as an auditor) during each semester that the thesis remains incomplete until the student either declares himself or herself no longer a candi-date for the degree or the student exhausts the six-year time period for completing the program. Students enrolled as auditors for Master’s Essay Direction must pay tuition and fees associated with this course and their transcripts will reflect a mark of Z (Audit).
All students must complete the basic course in their respective major field of study: Taxation for Taxation majors; Corporations for Corporate and Finance Law majors; and Labor Law for Labor and Employment Law majors. If a student completed the basic course in his or her major (wheth-er at Wayne Law or elsewh(wheth-ere) during the five-year time p(wheth-eriod preceding the commencement of his or her LL.M. studies at Wayne Law, then the requirement may be waived by the Director of Graduate Studies, depending on the content of the course and the grade received. Students who have not completed the basic course within five years of enrollment must enroll in the course, unless the requirement is waived by the Director of Graduate Studies.
Students registering for the basic course in their major receive two semester credit-hours toward completion of the 24 credit-hours of course work required for the LL.M. degree regardless of the number of credit hours listed in the course catalogue.
Registering for the Master’s Thesis
Students who are planning to write their Master’s Theses during the 2014-15 academic year must have participated in the Master’s Thesis Workshop that was held during the Fall Term 2014. Al-so, these students must complete the Authorization for Master’s Essay form, available from the Law School’s website or in the Law School Records Office, and submit it with an Add/Drop form in order to register for the thesis.
Students electing to complete the thesis in connection with a seminar must register for Master's Essay Direction (LEX 8999) for 2 credit-hours, and Directed Study (LEX 7990) for 1 credit-hour. (Do not register for the seminar.) Such students must notify the Law School Records Office by completing the Master’s Essay Direction form and include the name of the seminar associated with completion of the essay requirement. Students intending to write the Master’s Essay inde-pendently under the supervision of a professor must register for Master's Essay Direction (LEX 8999) for 2 semester credit-hours.
The total number of semester credit-hours required for the LL.M. degree is 26 whether the thesis is done in connection with a seminar or not.
LL.M. Courses
Unless otherwise specified, classes start during the week of January 12, 2015.
Listed on the following pages are pre-approved courses for each of the three majors. Students enrolling in such courses need not obtain the prior approval of the Director of Graduate Studies in order to have these courses count toward the requirements of their degree. In addition, students may take J.D. courses appropriate to their programs as electives. Such courses count toward the number of credits needed to graduate but do not satisfy the major-specific requirements unless approved in advance by the Director of Graduate Studies. Students who wish to fulfill the mas-ter’s thesis in connection with a J.D. seminar that is not listed as an approved LL.M. offering must secure permission from the Director of Graduate Studies.
To receive credit for a graduate-level course offered outside the Law School, the student must secure prior approval from the Director of Graduate Studies. The schedule of class offerings throughout the University is available at www.classschedule.wayne.edu.
University classes outside the Law School generally run from January 12 to April 27, 2015, with examinations scheduled from April 29 to May 5.
LL.M. students who have not had basic law school courses in their major fields, particularly Taxa-tion, Labor Law and Corporations, usually should plan to take these courses in their first semester of study.
