Quick guide for installation

and implementation

The purpose of this document is to guide you through the process of implementing EZManage SQL using SQL Server Databases. EZManage SQL is a powerful agentless centralized management tool for the optimal performance of Microsoft SQL Servers. Copyright 2013 DBA Services. All rights reserved. 1) About EZManage SQL

EZManage SQL is an affordable, easy-to-use database management solution for Microsoft™ SQL Server databases. Providing comprehensive maintenance, backups, monitoring and DRP from one centralized console, as well as an advanced

performance monitoring and blocking analyze. EZManage SQL automates traditional DBA tasks such as monitoring, re-indexing, backup & restore, to improve SQL Server performance, minimize downtime and reduce costs.

2) Installation

Once the Setup Wizard installation is completed, use the "ADD SQL SERVER" in order to broadcast the network and select the servers you want to manage.

The selected server will be shown on the left side as a "TREE", you now can divide them into groups and attach policies per groups (production, test, DRP, QA…).

Important: You can connect to the SQL server by Windows Authentication or by the local SQL user authentication.

3) Define Server's and Data Base's Notification Settings

Notification settings module allows users to create server and database notifications from the Notification Settings module.

Select a server to create server policies:

Or select a database to create database policies:

The selected severity of each notification (disable, information, warning and error) will define the dashboard color when an alert is activated.

Once the rules are selected, select Notification Suite button in the top right corner-> Save Current Settings As -> and choose a name for the Notification suite.

After creating the database and server Notification Policies, you can apply them into multiple servers in a single action:

Choose multiple servers or server groups -> Right click -> Notification Settings

You can also perform this using the "Fast Implementation" (see "Fast Implementation" chapter).

4) Data Base's Backups, Maintenance and Optimization Rules

The Maintenance module allows users to define Backups, Maintenance and Optimization jobs, which will run automatically at the selected schedule. First you need to select a database.

In order to define a new Maintenance Suite, first choose desired rules by

 Selecting the check box of the desired rules.

 Edit the rules using the buttons on the right side.

 You can also create a new rule using the button "Create a New Rule". After you finish, write the new rule name in the text box -> choose "Maintenance Suite" button -> Save Current Settings.

Alternatively, you can choose the option "Best Practice Maintenance Suite" (Microsoft experts' recommendations), for a tailor made maintenance suite.

5) Fast Implementation Suites and Settings

Once finished creating "Maintenance Suites" and "Notification Suites", you can apply them all for multiple servers simultaneously.

Simply select all the desired servers or groups of servers -> right click-> fast implementation.

5.1) Setting up a Disaster Recovery Rule

EZManage SQL provides you with an easy way to setup a complete Disaster Recovery solution, using a step-by-step wizard, which allows you to customize your settings to achieve the optimal and most suitable flow for your needs.

When setting a DR Rule, note the following items:

 The source database backup files should be placed in a location that is accessible from the destination server (It means that the SQL server and agent services are running with a user that has permissions for the backup folder of the source server).

 When the destination database is restored it is kept in a “STANDBY” (read-only) mode and is accessible for user queries.

 The destination database is kept in a “READ_ONLY” or “STANDBY” mode to assure that it is an exact copy of the source database upon restore.

 When setting a DR Rule with different versions of SQL server based on transaction log or differential data, the destination database is kept in a “RESTORING” mode and is not accessible for user queries until it is brought online (Bringing the destination DB online is only for the sake of reading information).

Important: Before defining a DRP Rule, make sure that the desired database has a backup rule made by the EZManage SQL software (Data backup and Log backup).

Select "Create New DRP Rule" at the top of the DRP menu and the wizard will guide you to define the rule simply and efficiently.

5.2) In case of an emergency

(Disaster Recovery procedure needed)

Right click on the destination database -> Restore Database -> Close

unfinished restore. The destination database is then accessible for any

user queries

*The failover procedure completion is not performed automatically by

the system because it is a sensitive situation which needs to be

6.1) Scheduled Operations Panel

The Scheduled Operations interface provides you with a powerful single-glance view of all jobs that were created and are running on all servers simultaneously. The centralized job view helps you view all issues instantly and prioritize your work. A user can also filter jobs to view only relevant jobs (failed, running, succeeded…) and take action

To view the jobs, choose the desire server or servers in the server tree on the left side.

The Scheduled Operations panel provides you with multiple tasks, some of them are:

 Creating New Scheduled Jobs.

 Starting and Stopping Jobs.

 Copy Jobs.

 Edit Existing Jobs.

 Schedule Jobs.

 Enable, Disable and Delete Jobs.

 Refresh Jobs.

 Modify the General Parameters of a Job.

 History of Job Execution.

6.2) Management Center Panel

Management center is a floating panel that shows very detailed

information from the servers and databases.

The Management Center is where you can view and manage the status of the servers and databases managed by EZManage SQL Pro.

The Management Center dialog box is divided into several panels. You can select which panels you want to view at any given time by selecting them in the Panels list on the toolbar.

By selecting a server or database you can view information summary, backup history, services from the operating system, databases, active locking and blocking

processes, logical drives, current connections, properties which you can modify, active alerts, database indexes, database files and more. You can also take immediate actions and modify the screen to save a certain layout.

There are panels available at the server level only and there are also panels available at the database level only, or for both.

6.3) Multi-Servers Scripting panel

EZManage SQL Pro offers an advanced tool to execute TSQL queries and scripts on multiple servers or databases simultaneously and displaying the results in one aggregated screen.

Administration scripts can be executed on multiple servers, and application-specific scripts can also run on multiple databases across multiple servers.

You can upload and run queries from a list of predefined queries supplied with the product, or write and save your own queries and their results.

After running queries and/or scripts, EZManage SQL Pro displays the results of the action and any messages that may be written by the application.

You can also save the results window to a CSV file (to be used in applications like MS Excel), or you can send them directly to be printed.

7) The Performance and Blocking monitor module

The Performance module allows you to improve user satisfaction and

ensure that applications meet business needs:

 Identify real time and historical performance problems

 Determine whether the performance problems are from the SQL server or the operating system.

 Examine the events that are causing performance problems.

 Diagnose the top problematic queries.

 Examine queries and displays its resource consumption for a selected period of time.

The Blocking module allows you to save time by quickly Identifying and

solving real time and historical Blocking operations and open

transactions:

 Intuitive Hierarchical Display of the blocking and open transactions by user, login name, software and SPID (Server Process ID).

 Identify existing blocking problems that often disable the workflow of the users.

 Display the script that causes the blocking and highlighting the problematic section of the TSQL code.

 Release blocking and open transactions at the touch of a button.

8) Automatic DBA Reports

EZManage SQL provides you with a Periodical in depth Report for your

SQL servers and DB’s at the touch of a button:

 Export fast and automatic report that contains a periodical summary of all your servers and databases.

 Intuitive summary and detailed information regarding Backups, Jobs, Performance, Error Logs, DB’s.

 Automatic scheduled email delivery.

 Well-designed exported HTML reports.

Choose the desired servers and simply press the "New Report button". You can also see the "Reports History" using the combo box.

9) EZManage SQL Pro Global Settings

The EZManage SQL Pro comes with a predefined set of default settings based on best practices and DBA's experience with multiple installations.

However, you can modify these settings to suit your specific job requirements. Some settings have to be changed (for example the SMTP server, which is your email server).

To modify EZManage SQL Pro’s global settings, select Options > Global Settings

To change settings for a specific server:

1. Collapse the tree to show the servers in the specific setting you want to change.

2. Select a server.

3. On the panel on the right, unselect the Use default settings check box. The little chain link below the server in the tree disappears indicating that the server is no longer “linked” to the default settings.
