32nd Sunday after Pentecost Sunday of Zaccheus

Tropar, tone 8: You came down from on high, O Merciful One,* and accepted three days of burial* to free us from our sufferings.* O Lord, our life and our resurrection,* glory be to You.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen!

Kondak, tone 8: When You rose from the tomb,* You also raised the dead and resur-rected Adam.* Eve exults in Your resurrection,* and the ends of the world celebrate Your rising from the dead,* O most merciful One.

Prokimen, tone 8: Pray and give praise to the Lord our God.

Verse: In Judea God is known; His name is great in Israel.

Epistle: A reading from the first Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to Timothy. (4: 9 - 15)

Timothy, my son! You can depend on this as worthy of complete acceptance. This explains why we work and struggle as we do; our hopes are fixed on the living God who is the savior of all men, but especially of those who believe. Such are the things you must urge and teach. Let no one look down on you because of your youth, but be a continuing example of love, faith, and purity to believers. Until I arrive, devote yourself to the reading of Scripture, to preaching and teaching. Do not neglect the gift you re-ceived when, as a result of prophecy, the presbyters laid their hands on you. Attend to your duties; let them absorb you, so that everyone may see your progress.

Alleluia Verses: Come, let us rejoice in the Lord; let us acclaim God our Savior. Let us come before His countenance with praise and acclaim Him with psalms.

January 17th—Zacchaeus Sunday

The Sunday of Zacchaeus reminds us that we will soon be entering the time of the Holy Great Fast which in turn prepares us for the passion and death of Je-sus through which our salvation is secured and promised in the Holy Resurrec-tion.

Before we enter the Great Forty-Days, we already get a glimpse of the Feast of feasts - Pascha -as we hear the words of our Lord to Zacchaeus: "Today salva-tion has come to this house...." Salvasalva-tion is not just a word but rather a person - the Person of Jesus Christ! Isn't it a feeling of joy for us to realize that Jesus comes to be the guest of one of us? Zacchaeus, a public swindler, welcomed

Him with great joy. And yet, today's holy Gospel account tells us that when Jesus was asked to stay with Zac-chaeus, everyone began to murmur, because He was entering the house of a known sinner, a publican - a pup-pet tax collector for the Roman occupation forces in Israel.

Isn't it a pity that we seem to be kinder to people in their times of adversity than in their times of joy? The twins of envy and jealously hidden within us to prevent us from rejoicing in the good fortunes of neighbors. We ourselves have received many blessings, but often we would deny the same to others. We see this same attitude on the part of the Pharisees and scribes as described in the holy gospels.

The gospel lessons of the pre-great fast Sundays give us the guidelines to complete the great fast journey suc-cessfully. The desire to see Jesus is one of the key attitudes that we must take along on our journey to Pascha. Obviously the desire of Zacchaeus to see the Lord was so great that he gave no thought to the people around him as they tried to prevent him in his quest. Desire is our lesson for this first pre-great fast Sunday. This is the first step toward repentance.

The next four Sundays of the pre-great fast season will also give us lessons and attitudes as conveyed through the holy epistles and gospels which will help us along the way. Envy and jealousy are not the vehicles of travel for us. But rejoicing in the Lord for the abundance of His blessings is an excellent means to reach the goal. Jesus' words directed towards Zacchaeus are meant for all of us: "Today salvation has come to this house...." Let us prepare to accept Christ as our salvation in the days to come.

APPEAL FOR PRAYER FOR PEACE IN AMERICA UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN AMERICA ASK

FOR PRAYER

Upon request of the Ukrainian Bishops in the United States, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, has sent out an appeal to all bishops throughout the world that they and the faithful of their eparchies and exarchates would join in prayer for America. The citizens of the U.S. are experi-encing a moment of great social upheaval that threatens to transition from a battle of words and politics to physical violence on a scale not seen since the destructive rioting in US cities this past summer. It may go even further and spread to many more cities throughout that country. His Beatitude explained that some of the bishops fear that "a deep division has occurred between the people and there is a real danger of civil and even military conflict that would lead to very uncertain consequences."

His Beatitude Sviatoslav: There are

no religious reasons to avoid

vac-cination

Vaccination is one of the possible ways to prevent the spread of the disease. We must take care of the lives and health of ourselves and our neighbors. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC, said this in an interview with Channel 5, answering questions about the acceptability of vaccination.

The Head of the UGCC noted that very often people have their

own ideas and superstitions that have nothing to do with religious life, moreover, they are more important than a living faith in God.

According to him, last year taught all Christians to distinguish the main from the secondary. We have learned to distinguish what is the content of our faith and what are temporary forms of experiencing it. Those forms can change because life changes.

This year, says the Father and the Head of the UGCC, I began to understand that vaccination should not be feared.

"Obviously, the safety or effectiveness of the vaccine is within the competence of physicians. When it comes to the perception of vaccination as a phenomenon, there is no religious reason to avoid it. Today, all world lead-ers: the Holy Father, Patriarch Bartholomew, spoke in unison that vaccination is needed. Because this is one of the possible ways to prevent this disease," the Head of the Church explained.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav also mentioned the "Note on the morality of using some anti-Covid-19 vaccines" ap-proved by Pope Francis. It was promulgated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

"The document states that not only can you be vaccinated, but it is also a moral imperative. We must take care of our lives and the health of ourselves and our neighbors, and therefore we must take care of the common

good and obviously work on it together,” the Head of the UGCC added.

St. Basil

s Charitable project 2020

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, we continue to inform you through parish bulletin about our different charitable projects:

Ivan Polevyy’s family in Ukraine. Actually it were 4 families. Thank you for your donation.

# 14.St John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church of Dolyny, MB (Rossburn Pastoral District) donated

$500 towards poor children in Ukraine. The donation was sent shortly after Christmas, and we just received

cou-ple pictures from this project. With this donation we helped 25 poor children mostly with groceries (cou-please see the pictures) and three families in which are people who are sick and unable to walk. They are in great need of diapers and wet wipes.

Also our volunteer Anatoliy who helps me with every our project, asks if we able to buy in Pharmacy medicine

A Short blessing of Homes on the Feast of the Theophany

Let is pray to the Lord! Lord, Have mercy!

O God our Saviour, the true Light, who was baptized in the river Jordan by John to renew all men by the waters of regeneration, and Who condescended to enter under the rood of Zacchaeus to bring salvation to him and to all his household, keep safe also from all harm those who dwell here; grant them Your blessing, purification and bodily health and all their petitions for their salvation and life everlasting. For blessed are You, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever and ever.

Amen!

This home is blessed by the sprinkling of this holy water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and aver. Amen.

While the home is being blessed from room to room, the kondak of the feast (below) may be sung repeatedly or favour-ite Christmas carols.

(Tone 4) Today You have appeared to the world and Your light, O Lord, has been signed on us,

who with knowledge sing Your praises. You have come, You have appeared, O unapproachable Light.

January 10th, First Holy Communion Class 2021. Fr. Jay Korban leads the lesson for 35 students from the Archeparchy. Please keep all students in your prayers!

32nd Sunday after Pentecost Sunday of Zaccheus Gospel: Luke 19: 1 - 10

At that time Jesus was passing through Jericho. There was a man there named Zaccheus, the chief tax collector and a wealthy man. He was trying to see what Jesus was like, but being small of stature, was unable to do so because of the crowd. He first ran on in front, then climbed a sycamore tree which was along Jesus' route, in order to see him. When Jesus came to the spot he looked up and said, “Zaccheus, hurry down. I mean to stay at your house today.” He quickly descended, and welcomed him with delight. When this was observed, everyone began to murmur, “He has gone to a sinner’s house as a guest.” Zaccheus stood his ground and said to the Lord: “I give half my belongings, Lord, to the poor. If I have defrauded anyone in the least, I pay him back four-fold.” Jesus said to him: “Today salvation has come to this house, for this is what it means to be a son of Abraham. The Son of Man has come to search out and save what was lost.”

Communion Hymn: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
