The film was a box office success and received seven Academy Awards©, including Best Picture, Best Director,
and Best Original Score. It won numerous other awards as well. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked
the film eighth on its list of the 100 best American films of all time. (Wikipedia, accessed 2 April 2011)
Main Assignment
First, I would like you to watch the movie from start to finish with a parent, guardian, or another
trusted adult. This is important because this movie can be emotionally disturbing and/or confusing at times. I want you to have someone you trust readily available to bounce any questions or concerns you may have as you watch.
Then, answer the questions and write a reflection based on the prompt on page 3 of this document. I
encourage you to discuss this assignment with parents/guardians/other adults, peers, and/or me before you write. However, in the end what you write should reflect what you personally think, not anyone else. This assignment must be word processed unless there are any unavoidable circumstances that prevent you from doing that. Please talk to me about it first if that is the case.
Assessment
Your responses will be assessed using the Amity School Wide Writing and Critical Thinking Rubrics. They are on the next page. Points will be awarded based on the weighted average of all responses. Weights are indicated on the prompt.
Level 1
Average rating “Exemplary” ‐> 10 points added to the total number of points you have earned for the
marking period
“Skilled” ‐> 8 points added
“Proficient” ‐> 7 points added
“Developing” ‐> 6 points added
“Deficient” ‐> 2 points added
“Not done” ‐> no points added
Level 2
Average rating “Exemplary” ‐> 10 points added to the total number of points you have earned for the
marking period
“Skilled” ‐> 10 points added
“Proficient” ‐> 8 points added
“Developing” ‐> 7 points added
“Deficient” ‐> 3 points added
“Not done” ‐> no points added
Remember, I use a total points system. Therefore, if you get 10 points added, it’s like getting an extra 10 points on one of my 100 point tests. Please let me know if you are not clear how this will work.
Due Date
This assignment is to be submitted to www.turnitin.com by the Thursday after spring break – April 30 – at

Main Assignment Questions and Reflection Prompt
After watching Schindler’s List and discussing it with people you trust, respond to the questions and reflection
prompt below. The response to the questions 1‐5 should be at least a cohesive paragraph each – the length for
the reflection based on the prompt should be between 250‐500 words. Remember, its quality, not quantity that
counts!
Questions (50%)
1. What were your feelings about the film immediately after it was over? Describe what they are and what
about the film made you feel that way.
2. What do you understand now about the Holocaust that you didn’t before you saw the film?
3. How does this movie illustrate how those who commit genocide need to think of certain groups being
"alien" or "less than human?”
4. Historians are reasonably sure now that many German people knew what was going on at the
concentration camps. If so, wouldn’t they be just as guilty as their Nazi leaders for the Holocaust because they did not stop it? Why or why not?
5. Historians are reasonably sure now that President Roosevelt and many in the American government knew
what was going on at the concentration camps. They could have focused their firepower on the ovens and the killing operations, but they didn’t. Are they just as guilty as the Nazi leaders for the Holocaust because they did not stop it? Why or why not?
Reflection (50%)
Describe a situation that you have seen that you believe is not right. Now be realistic ‐‐ what have you done about it? What, if anything, has prevented you from going farther? What, if anything, will you do differently about it now since you saw this movie? Why?

Alternative Assignment
Those who do not want to watch Schindler’s List, for whatever reason, have the option to complete the
following alternative assignment instead. It is similar in learning objectives, time, and effort required as the
main assignment.
Website Analyses (20%)
Find two websites that discuss the Holocaust. For each website, answer the following questions. Your
responses should demonstrate to me that you thoroughly analyzed each website.
1. What is the URL of the main page of this website? (I’m going to check it out before I evaluate your work.)
2. What is the title of the website?
3. Is it a personal website, and therefore one person’s opinion, which means it likely is very biased, or is it the
site for an organization? (If you are not sure, a personal site often has a tilde (~) and/or a percent sign (%). It does not have to, though.)
4. Whose thoughts are represented? Is there an author listed?
5. When was the site last updated?
6. Are there sources/links listed? If so, where?
7. Analyze all the pages on the website. That includes reading the text, examining at the pictures and/or
graphics, and watching/listening to videos and/or other media. What did you learn about the Holocaust based on your examination of this website?
8. Based on all of this, is the information biased? If so, how do you know? Where do you see the bias?
9. On a scale of 1‐10, how would you rate the site for reliability? Justify your rating.
Questions (30%)
The response to each question should be at least a cohesive paragraph
1. What do you understand now about the Holocaust that you didn’t before you did this research?
2. Historians are reasonably sure now that many German people knew what was going on at the
concentration camps. Are they just as guilty as their Nazi leaders for the Holocaust because they did not stop it? Why or why not?
The length for this reflection should be between 250‐500 words. Remember, its quality, not quantity that
counts!
Describe a situation that you have seen that you believe is not right. Now be realistic ‐‐ what have you done about it? What, if anything, has prevented you from going farther? What, if anything, will you do differently about it now since you did this analysis? Why?
Assessment & Due Date
This alternative assignment will be assessed like the main assignment, as described on page 3. The due date is the same as well – Thursday April 30. It should be uploaded to www.turnitin.com by 11:59pm.
