Lesson-Decimals Topic-Multiplication of Decimals

(Write only examples in c.w copy) The rules of multiplying decimals are:

(i) Take the two numbers as whole numbers (remove the decimal) and multiply.

(ii) In the product, place the decimal point after leaving digits equal to the total number of decimal places in both numbers. (iii) Counting decimal point must always be done from the units place of the product.

(8)

1. Find the product of 49.6 × 14

First perform multiplication ignoring decimal point as we do in whole numbers.

Here the multiplicant contains one decimal place, so the product must contain one decimal place.

Thus, 49.6 × 14 = 694.4

2. Multiply 128.16 by 2.5 Solution:

In 128.16, there are 2 decimal places after the decimal point and in 2.5, there is 1 decimal point after decimal point.

Therefore, total 2 + 1 = 3 decimal places Now multiply, 12816 and 25

12816

× 25

64080

256320

320400

(9)

Now place the decimal point to have three decimal places after the point.

Therefore, 9.17 × 0.5 = 4.585

4. Find the product of 26.452 × 2.1

Perform the multiplication ignoring the decimal points in multiplicand and multiplier.

Since 26452 × 21 = 555492

Here the multiplicand contains three decimal places and

multiplier contains one decimal place, so together the product must contain four decimal places.

Therefore, 26.452 × 2.1 = 55.5492

The working rule of multiplication of a decimal by 10, 100, 1000, etc... are:

When the multiplier is 10, 100 or 1000, we move the decimal point to the right by as many places as number of zeroes after 1 in the multiplier.

For example:

(10)

(ii) 72.4 × 100

(iii) 887.43 × 1000

Properties of Multiplication of

Decimal Numbers

1. The product of a decimal and a whole number multiplied in any order remains the same.

Example: 0.9 × 12 = 12 × 0.9 = 10.8

2. The product of two decimal numbers remains the same, even if the order is changed.

Example:2.5 × 3.5 = 3.5 × 2.5 = 8.75

3. The product of a decimal fraction and 1 is the decimal fraction itself.

Example: 1.092 × 1 = 1.092

4. The product of a decimal fraction and zero is zero. Example: 891.56 × 0 = 0

5. While performing multiplication in decimals, the numbers can be taken in any group and the product remains the same.

Word problems

1. Price of 1 metre cloth is Rs 49.75. Find the price of 16 metres of cloth.

Solution:

Price of 1 metre cloth =Rs 49.75 Price of 16 metres of cloth = × 16 29850 4975x 796.00 Thus, price of 16 metres of cloth = Rs796

2. A train can run 45.8 km in one hour. What will be the distance travelled by the train in 5 hours?

Solution:

Distance covered by train in 1 hour = 45.8 km Distance covered by train in 5 hours = 45.8 × 5 229.0 Therefore, in 5 hours train will travel 229 km.

3. 2.35 m of cloth is needed to make a shirt. How many metre of cloth is needed to make 10 such shirts?

LESSON 6: The Land of Dense Forests **Content of the lesson: -

• The Democratic Republic of Congo lies between the

Tropic of Cancer & Tropic of Capricorn which is known as

the equatorial region. It is the largest country in Africa after Algeria with an area of about 23.5 lakh square kilometres. The Equator passes through the northern part of the country.

LOCATION: The country is located in Central Africa. It is surrounded by nine neighbouring countries which are:

Central African Republic and South Sudan to the North, Republic of Congo to the West.

Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania to the East; Zambia to the South-east; and

Angola to the South-west.

LAND: River Congo which is the second-longest river in Africa, flows through the country. This

river is known as the Highway of Central Africa. The country lies in the centre of the river basin. which is a vast, low-lying area, covered with rainforests (Rainforests are the forests which receive

heavy and continuous rainfall). It is surrounded by Ruwenzori mountains in the north-east. Mount Margherita is the highest peak in this range. The country has four lakes-Albert, Edward, Kivu and Tanganyika which lie along the eastern boundary of the country.

CLIMATE: The country has an equatorial climate (very hot and humid throughout the year with

high humidity). Mornings are generally pleasant. Evenings and nights are cool and comfortable. At noon, because of high temperature and unbearable heat,

clouds build up gradually resulting in heavy rains in the afternoons.

VEGETATION: In hot and humid regions, trees and other

plants grow quickly. Evergreen forests are found in this country. They remain green throughout the year. In these forests most of the trees are tall and form a dense canopy

(a mass of leaves and branches that spread over an area to form a roof) at the top.

TOPICS: DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), its Location, Land, Climate, Vegetation, Wildlife.

Tanzania

(17)

WILDLIFE: Gorillas, chimpanzees, monkeys, bonobos and baboons are found in the forests. Marshy
