Page 2 of 17 Note: If your system currently has V2.0 or later, do NOT follow these instructions. Instead, please follow the instructions found here.

Step 1: Download the Software Update Files to a USB Drive

Use a web browser (Google Chrome is recommended) to download the latest software update file

(AugmentedArcSoftware_V2_1_X_xxxx.zip) from this location: https://www.millerwelds.com/support/system-setup- and-software/augmentedarc-software (on the website, click on Download Latest Software Update (from V1.x) >>)

Note: This software update file is very large (~3.5 GB) and may take more than an hour to download.

After the download completes, if you see any warning messages like this, then select the arrow tab and then select

“Keep”.

Open the downloaded file – AugmentedArcSoftware_V2_1_X_xxxx.zip.

Insert a USB flash drive (16GB or larger is recommended) into the USB port of your computer and then delete the contents. Use a file unzipping utility to unzip and extract the contents to the empty USB drive. There are different ways to do this. The following pages show two common methods – using Windows Explorer and using WinZip.

(3)

Unzip with Windows Explorer

If using the default Windows Explorer unzipping utility, select “Extract all files”.

Select the USB drive location and then select “OK”. Note: The letter of the drive may differ based on your computer.

(4)

Page 4 of 17 Select “Extract”. The extraction process will then begin and may take a few minutes.

The USB drive will then contain 3 files as shown below:

Unzip with WinZip

If using WinZip, select the “Unzip to:” drop-down button.

Select the USB drive location and then select “Unzip”. Note: The letter of the drive may differ based on your computer.

The extraction process will then begin and may take a few minutes.

Step 3: Install the Latest Simulator Software on the Simulator

STANDALONE MODE

If your AugmentedArc® system is setup in Standalone Mode (as is usually the case if you only have one system), follow these instructions. Otherwise, skip to page 11.

IMPORTANT: This is a very significant software update that will take up to 30 minutes to complete. It is extremely important that the complete update process run in its entirety without interruption to power.

Once the process has begun, DO NOT turn off or disable power to the unit until the update process has been completed – doing so may result in a malfunction of the system.

Plug the USB drive into the USB port located in the back of the AugmentedArc® Simulator.

Login as an instructor. Unless it has been changed, the default instructor login is:

• User Name: Admin, Admin

• Password: 1111

Press the “SETTINGS” button shown here:

(10)

Page 10 of 17 Select the “Update Software” option.

Select the “USB Stick” option.

There will be a long pause (approximately 5 minutes) as it loads the files from the USB drive. You will then see a message “Installing the new updates. AugmentedArc will reboot when finished…” The system will then go through the process of loading the updates which will include a series of automated reboots along with on-screen messages. DO NOT disable power to the unit until the update process is completed (the entire process from start to finish takes approximately 30 minutes.)

(11)

Page 11 of 17 As a part of the software update sequence, the system will be updated to V1.3.2. With V1.3.2 installed, it will attempt to save a backup of the internal database to the USB flash drive. If there is enough storage capacity on the USB flash drive, the process will proceed seamlessly. After the process is completed, you will see the login screen. In this case, skip to Verifying the Update on page 15.

If there is not enough available storage capacity on the USB flash drive, you will receive this message:

If you have a keyboard connected, press space to continue the boot-up process with V1.3.2 software. If you don’t have a keyboard, press the power button to power down the system. To proceed with updating to V2.0 software, you will need to use a USB flash drive with a larger capacity and reload the software update files onto the USB flash drive per step 1 of these instructions. Then, with the simulator powered down (off), plug the USB flash drive into the USB port and then power it on. If there is enough storage capacity on the USB flash drive, the update process will proceed seamlessly. After the process is completed, you will see the login screen.

Skip to Verifying the Update on page 15.

CLASSROOM MODE

If your AugmentedArc® system is setup in Classroom Mode (as is usually the case if you have more than one system), follow these instructions:

IMPORTANT: This is a very significant software update that will take up to 1 hour to complete. It is extremely important that the complete update process run in its entirety without interruption to power.

Once the process has begun, DO NOT turn off or disable power to the unit until the update process has been completed – doing so may result in a malfunction of the system.

Power down the controller AND all connected AugmentedArc® simulator systems.

Plug the USB drive into a black USB port located in the back of the controller (the blue USB ports are USB 3.0 and may not work).

It is recommended that you connect a computer monitor via the VGA or DVI port on the rear of the controller. This will allow you to monitor the progress of the software update process. If you cannot use a computer monitor to view the software update status, it is recommended that you use a timer to measure 1 hour, which will give the controller enough time to complete the update process.

Press the power button to turn on the controller. If using a timer, start the timer now. Again, do not turn off or disable power to the controller until at least 1 hour has passed.

(13)

Page 13 of 17 After the controller boots up, it will automatically load and install the software update. During the update process, the system will go through a series of automated reboots and display various on-screen messages visible only with a connected computer monitor. DO NOT turn off or disable power to the unit until the update process is completed.

As a part of the software update sequence, the system will be updated to V1.3.2. With V1.3.2 installed, it will attempt to save a backup of the internal database to the USB flash drive. If there is enough storage capacity on the USB flash drive, the process will proceed seamlessly. After the process is completed, you will see the System Information screen, In this case, skip to Verifying the Update on page 15.

If there is not enough available storage capacity on the USB flash drive, you will receive this message (only if viewing on an external monitor):

(14)

Page 14 of 17 If you have a keyboard connected, press space to continue the boot-up process with the V1.3.2 software. If you don’t have a keyboard, press the power button to power down the system. To proceed with updating to V2.0 software, you will need to use a USB flash drive with a larger capacity and reload the software update files onto the USB flash drive per step 1 of these instructions. Then with the controller powered down (off), plug the USB flash drive into the USB port and then power it on. If there is enough storage capacity on the USB flash drive, the update process will proceed seamlessly.

After the process is completed, you will see the System Information screen.

After you see the System Information screen or the 1 hour timer has passed, the controller software update is completed. Reboot each of the AugmentedArc® simulators that are part of the Classroom Mode network. Each simulator will automatically be updated to the new version of software installed on the controller. The process of updating each simulator will take about 15 minutes.

(15)

Step 4: Verify the Software Update

When the simulator boots up for the first time after the software update, you should see a message on the login screen as shown here:

On the Simulator, you can also verify the software version on the System Settings screen here:

If you encounter any difficulties during the software update process, feel free to contact Miller technical support at (866) 931-9730 (option 3) or email our education products support team at [email protected].

(16)

Step 5: Software Changes

There are many significant enhancements and changes involved in this software update. Please take the time to review this document that highlights them here: V2.0 Software Upgrade Guide.

In addition, please be aware that all previous courses, modules, exercises, and students are preserved through the software update process and will still be available after the software update is completed. However, the detailed results of simulation tests performed with the previous version of software will no longer be viewable on the simulator – these simulation tests will be shown as grayed out with the Review option disabled. These detailed simulation results can still be accessed and reviewed on a PC using the latest Teacher Software.

Step 6: Update the Software to V2.1.x

Now that you have updated your system to V2.0.3, you will have to go through a secondary process to update to the most recent version (V2.1.x). This secondary process is much shorter than the first process and is documented in detail here: Software Upgrade Instructions (from V2.x)
