Hello kids! Do you know that the Philippines is known for having many beautiful landforms and bodies of water? These natural features form part of our country’s geography. There are names given for each type of land formation and bodies of water. All of these have great impacts on the lives of the people. Can you name some famous landforms or water forms found in the Philippines? If not, let us check the sample physical map of the Philippines on the next page to help you recall the landforms and bodies of water.

(5)

The Philippines has vast natural resources.

These are found in the country’s land and water formations.

(6)

The Landforms

A plain is a flat and wide piece of land. Most farming communities are found in plains. These communities plant crops and raise animals in the plains.

A valley is a flat land between hills and mountains. Many people live in valleys where they plant rice, corn, vegetables, fruits, and other crops.

(7)

A mountain is a tall mount of land. The tallest mountain in our country is Mount Apo in Davao. It is 2,954 meters tall.

Forests, rare plants and animals’ species are found in the mountains.

A mountain range is a group of mountains connected to one another. The Sierra Madre and the Cordillera are mountain ranges in the island of Luzon.

(8)

A volcano is a mountain with crater on its peak. Hot, molten rock and gases escape from the crater. Sometimes these materials are expelled with much force in a volcanic eruption. Mount Mayon in Albay is one of the active volcanoes in the country. It is known for its almost perfect conical shape.

A hill is a mound of land which is lower than a mountain.

The most famous hills in our country are the Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

(9)

A plateau is a mountain or mountain range with a flat surface on top. Baguio City in Benguet Province is a famous plateau in our country. The province of Bukidnon in Mindanao is also a plateau.

A peninsula is an elongated landform surrounded by water.

The Zamboanga Peninsula, the province of Bataan and the Bicol Region are examples of peninsula.

(10)

9

An island is a landform entirely surrounded with water. The Philippines is made up of 7,641 islands. An archipelago is composed of many islands. The Philippines is an archipelago. Some of these islands are big and some are small. The island of Luzon is the biggest island in our country.

The Philippines has a long coastline. This is the result of being archipelago. Coastlines are plain lands along the seashores. They are suited for fishing, trading and tourism.

Manila sits in the coastal lowlands of Manila Bay.

(11)

The Water forms

The Philippines is surrounded by large bodies of water. Also, smaller bodies of water are found in several places throughout our country.

An ocean is the widest and deepest body of water. Its water is salty, and it is home to different fishes, dolphins, sharks, whales, and others. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world and is found east of the Philippines.

(12)

11

A sea is a large body of water, but it is smaller than an ocean. Like the ocean, the seas are home to many sea creatures. Ships, boats, and other marine vessels also pass through the seas.

A bay is a water form connected to the sea. Bays provide a safe place for fishing and a shelter for boats and smaller sea vessels.

(13)

A gulf is a water form that is bigger than a bay. Its sides are surrounded by land.

(14)

13

A strait or channel is a narrow and elongated water form between two islands that are not far away from each other.

Straits are important passageways for ships and other marine vessels.

(15)

A river is a long body of fresh water which flows into lakes, bays, or seas. The river’s water comes from rainwater from mountains or highlands, from ground water, or from other sources such as springs. The smaller branches of a river are called brooks, streams, or creeks.

A spring is a water form that comes from beneath the ground. A spring can be hot or cold.

(16)

A lake is a water form surrounded by land. It usually has fresh water which does not flow. Water in a lake is fresh and is suitable for drinking.

A waterfall is a streaming down from a high place. It is usually part of a river. The energy from a waterfall is often used to generate power.

(17)

A creek is a body of water branching out from a river. It is smaller than a river. There are creeks which start from the mouth of a river. There are some which comes from a spring.

A creek may be seen in a town, beside a long road, or crossing a farm or ricefield.

The narrow and shallow creek usually dries up during hot summer months.

Examples of a creek is the Sapang Baho Creek that slices the area between Marikina and Cainta and Antipolo City.

(19)

Maps can help us understand how landforms and bodies of water come together. A topographic map shows us the landforms and bodies of water found in our country.

In a topographic map, the bodies of water are usually colored blue, while the landforms are colored green and brown. Labels and symbols are used to identify the different landforms and bodies of water. The topographic map also shows the relief or terrain, which is the difference between the elevations of different places in the map. The green colored areas represent flat land, while the brown colored areas represent high land such as mountains, mountain ranges, and plateau.

Use the alphabetical guide below to help us have effective virtual classes.

A is for Avoid Acronyms

• Use your full name when you sign in to the virtual classroom and when you submit/upload your works online.

• Be clear with your words and spell things out correctly in order to avoid confusion and misunderstandings with the teacher and classmates. Avoid using acronyms such as LOL (laugh out loud) and TTYL (talk to you later), not all users are as familiar with these abbreviations

B is for Brevity

• While participating in virtual classroom discussions, keep your answers short and on topic. You may also use the chat box for your message or questions.

C is for Courtesy

• Be respectful. Even on online classes, use polite expressions like “please” and “thank you.”

• Raise your “virtual hands” and wait to be recognized when responding to a question or comment. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Option+Y on a Mac or Alt+Y on a PC to raise your hand.

• Mute your microphone during the lesson to avoid disturbing the class with any background noise.

• Avoid using all uppercase letters; this is often considered the equivalent of shouting.

• When you enter the classroom, make sure to enable both audio and video.

25

(27)

D is for Ditching Distractions

•Before an online school session begins, eliminate

environmental distractions that may divert your attention away from learning.

• Clear the room of playful pets or noisy siblings.

• Minimize background noise by turning off the TV and radio.

• Turn off cell phones. (No multitasking during class!)

• Do not to let the microphone broadcast unless you are asked to speak.

E is for Early

• Be prepared before the online class. Download any necessary software and connect and test devices like microphones or video cameras before the lesson begins.

Exit other applications on their computers prior to

launching the classroom software. Come to class early.

• When your class is over, leave the classroom by closing the window.

F is for Focus and Friendships

• Focus on the classroom conversation and activities.

• Take notes on the information presented.

• Ask relevant questions to clarify the material covered or assignments given.

• Do not join sideline chats with classmates when the teacher is speaking.

(28)

G is for Good Intentions

• Read and interpret virtual classroom messages with the assumption that teachers and classmates have good

intentions. What seems like a short or abrupt answer from a classmate (or teacher) probably doesn’t mean anger—

the other person might just be busy.

• Reread your own messages for friendliness and respect before sending.

In Submission of School Tasks

• All students are required to complete the school tasks uploaded in the PSD LMS: e-desk. All works in the

asynchronous class/activities in the modules will be monitored.

• All students are expected to submit their work, upload or attach their work in the PSD LMS: e-desk. Select

carefully in the Assessment Evaluation Section where to attach a particular work. If your file is too big, it needs to be converted into the minimum size or you can provide a link for your work.

• In case the server is down or too busy or overloaded, the teacher will indicate another platform where you can

submit your work. Google classroom is the alternative learning platform for PSD e-desk.

27

(29)

Subject requirements for all students in Grade 3:

1. Social Studies 3 Module downloaded from the PSD official LMS: e-desk

2. Social Studies 3 textbook, The Filipino Odyssey 3 3. Social Studies 3 notebook, where notes, answers,

activities are reflected as required by the teacher.

4. Register using your complete name in the PSD e- desk and other platforms that we will be using (like Zoom, Google classroom, and Quizizz.com)
