3│Welcome to St. Patrick • Whitewater, Wisconsin Hello everyone,
I hope you are doing well and enjoying what is left of the summer. It was nice to see many of you at Country Fest, enjoying the events of the day, talking with fellow parishioners and enjoying the food.
The dinner table is a great place to strike a conversation, whether it be with family members, friends and even strangers.
I remember growing up when, as a family, we used to stay at the kitchen table for an hour or two after finish- ing our meal, just chatting, nothing in particular, just trying to catch up on things or reminiscing about the past. We would stay at the table until my mom would ask us to move the conversation to the living room be- cause as she put it “the kitchen is not going to clean itself”.
These past few weeks the theme of the Gospel readings has been about food. In this Sunday’s Gospel the Jews did not understand or believe what Jesus was saying, they were asking each other “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Why is the saying “I am the bread that came down from heaven,”?
What is it that we believe as Catholics? We believe what Jesus says in the Gospel, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” As Catholics, these words give us more than
hope that there is more to life than our human bodies and our time here on earth; it gives us certainty that one day, all of us will seat to- gether at the Lord ’s Table enjoying each other’s company when we pass from this life to the next.

Espero que estén bien y disfrutando de lo que queda del verano.
Fue muy grato ver a muchos de ustedes disfrutando de los eventos del día en Country Fest, hablando con otros feligreses y disfrutando de la comida.
La mesa es un gran lugar para entablar una conversación, ya sea con la familia, amigos e incluso extraños.
Recuerdo cuando como familia, solíamos quedarnos en la mesa una o dos horas después de terminar nuestra comida, simplemente charlando, hablando de nada en particular, ya sea solo tratando de ponernos al día o recordando cosas del pasado. Nos quedábamos en la mesa hasta que mi mamá nos decía que si queríamos seguir platicando nos fuéramos a la sala porque como ella decía “la cocina no se va a limpiar sola”.
Estas últimas semanas el tema de las lecturas del Evangelio ha girado en torno a la comida. En el Evange- lio de este domingo, los judíos no entendieron o no creyeron lo que Jesús decía, se preguntaban unos a otros: “¿No es éste, Jesús, el hijo de José? ¿Acaso no conocemos a su padre y a su madre? ¿Cómo nos dice ahora que ha bajado del cielo?”
¿Nosotros qué creemos como católicos? Creemos exactamente lo que Jesús dice en el Evangelio “Yo soy el pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo; el que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre. Y el pan que yo les voy a dar es mi carne para que el mundo tenga vida’’. Estas palabras, como católicos, nos dan más que esperanza de que hay más en la vida que nuestro cuerpo humano o nuestro tiempo aquí en la tierra, nos da la certeza de que un día, todos nos sentaremos juntos a la mesa del Señor disfrutando de la compañía de todos cuando pasemos de esta vida a la otra.

th(January 8, 1894 – August 14, 1941)
He entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans in Lvív–then Poland, now Ukraine– near his birthplace, and at 16 became a novice. Though Maximilian later achieved doctorates in philosophy and theology, he was deeply
interested in science, even drawing plans for rocket ships.
Ordained at 24, Maximilian saw religious indifference as the deadliest poison of the day. His mission was to combat it.
He founded Knight of the Immaculata, a religious magazine under Mary’s protection to preach the Good News to all nations. For the work of publication he established a “City of the Immaculata”—Niepokalanow—which housed 700 of his Franciscan brothers. He later founded another one in Nagasaki, Japan. Both the Militia and the magazine ultimately reached the one-million mark in members and subscribers. His love of God was daily filtered through devotion to Mary.
In 1939, the Nazi panzers overran Poland with deadly speed. Niepokalanow was severely bombed. Kolbe and his friars were arrested, then released in less than three months, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
In 1941, Fr. Kolbe was arrested again. The Nazis’ purpose was to liquidate the select ones, the leaders. The end came quickly, three months later in Auschwitz, after terrible beatings and humiliations. A prisoner had escaped. The
commandant announced that 10 men would die. He relished walking along the ranks. “This one. That one.” As they were being marched away to the starvation bunkers, Number 16670 dared to step from the line.
“I would like to take that man’s place. He has a wife and children.”
“Who are you?” “A priest.”
No name, no mention of fame. Silence. The commandant, dumbfounded, perhaps with a fleeting thought of history, kicked Sergeant Francis Gajowniczek out of line and ordered Fr. Kolbe to go with the nine. In the “block of death” they were ordered to strip naked, and their slow starvation began in
darkness. But there was no screaming—the prisoners sang. By the eve of the Assumption, four were left alive. The jailer came to finish Kolbe off as he sat in a corner praying. He lifted his
fleshless arm to receive the bite of the hypodermic needle. It was filled with carbolic acid. They burned his body with all the others.
Fr. Kolbe was beatified in 1971 and canonized in 1982.
