Newsletter No 35 Thursday November 5, 2020 Prayer for week 5 term 4

Michael McGirr

St Joseph’s School is a Catholic Community in the Josephite tradition where we learn and grow in the Spirit together.

St Joseph’s School acknowledges the Tuangurung people, the traditional Custodians of the land on which our school is situated. We commit ourselves to actively work alongside Aboriginal people for reconciliation and justice.

St. Joseph’s School is a child safe school

I am at my best when I am being Friendly, Respectful and a Positive Learner

Welcome to the end of Week 5, Term 4

Congratulations to Waheed, Jasmin and Abdullah on the birth of their daughter and sister, Haniya.

That is the third girl born this year.

I hope everyone had a great long weekend. It was a very different Melbourne Cup with no crowd in attendance!

School Crossing

Unfortunately, we had a close call on Friday. Two of our students crossed the road in front of a bus and an oncoming car had to stop. No one was hurt, but the driver and the passenger of the car had a big fright. I ask, no I implore that you as parents insist your child/ children use the crossing to access the middle section out the front of the school. It is very important that we as adults set the correct example.

Class groupings and fees for 2021

Last week Janelle emailed a letter outlining the staffing for 2021. It is a juggling act to work out our class groupings and which teacher will be in which area. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact school. I'm looking forward to teaching the 5/6 class on a Friday.

Next week I will email home a letter outlining the fees for 2021. This has been a slight increase, which is the Educational CPI.

Testing

Over the past week and into next week we have had relief teachers in the school so the staff can complete their testing. This covers a range of areas in literacy and numeracy. This gives us valuable data, it shows the students’

progression and gives us information on what we need to work on to keep the children moving forward.

Laptops for sale

At the end of the year we will have laptops for sale. They are MacBook Airs, 2 years old in October 2020.

$650 each. Please contact Janelle re specifications.

We are Praying for:

For Waheed, Jasmin and Abdullah as they welcome their daughter and sister to their family.

Our School community, and the students in particular as we work through the last term of 2020.

For Fr Tony and our Parish community, especially those who are unwell or receiving treatment.

We pray for our country's leaders as they guide the country and state through this pandemic.

For our staff member, Sandi McKinnon as she has treatment for severe back pain.

Classroom News - Term 4, Week 5 What’s On:

Transition for the Kinder children continued this week. They had a fun time and are getting to know their buddy for 2021. The children will be attending school on a Thursday morning for the next few weeks, until the end of recess.

Gen, Carol and Colleen have been in the classrooms this week and will be in at different times next week, to allow the teachers time to complete end of year testing with the students.

School photos will be taken next Tuesday. All students need to be at school at 8:50, in their full school uniform. As advised by the emails sent by Janelle, all orders are to be done online with the code sent to you, and class photos this year will be made up of individual student photos rather than the traditional group shot. Please speak to your child's teacher or Janelle if you have any questions.

Have a great week everyone!

Liz, Bridgette, Megan, Sam D, Sam G, Sue, Chris & Tim.

All students have now resumed weekly homework. Please speak to Bridgette, Liz or Megan if you have any questions about these tasks. Below are some useful tips for helping with, or supporting homework.

Limit Distractions - Create a homework zone for your students that is away from the T.V. and other places where there could be distractions such as pets, people coming and going and loud noises.

Provide Tools - Make sure the materials your student may need are readily available. It’s helpful to have a stash of pencils, pens, a dictionary, etc. available. Check in regularly and make sure that any special

materials needed for class projects are provided so their work won’t be disturbed.

Help Manage Time - Establish a set time for doing homework. Don’t wait until just before bedtime to do homework, when students are tired and easily distracted. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with other classmates.

Be Positive - The attitude you express towards homework will be the same attitude your child acquires.

Make it a habit to tell your child that the work they’re doing is important.

(4)

Do YOUR Homework Too - Show that the skills they’re learning are related to things you also do as an adult. If your student is reading, you could be reading too. If your student is practicing math, you could balance your checkbook, etc.

Teach Don’t Tell - It’s important that when asked for help you give guidance but not answers, that way your child learns the material and concepts. Remember that a lot can be learned from struggle and that too much help can teach your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for them.

Foster Independence - Some homework is really intended for students to do alone. Homework is a great way for kids to develop independence and accountability for lifelong learning skills.

Set Break Times - Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration. Let your child take a short break if they’re having trouble keeping their mind on the assignment. Build perseverance but set time limits to avoid burnout.

Reward Progress and Effort - When your child has been successful and is working hard, celebrate success with a special event to reinforce positive effort.

Each Friday morning after school drop off, parents and carers are invited to Foxhole for a social catch up ☕️

Catholic Identity Report – by Liz Tang, REL.

Remembrance Day

Next Wednesday, the 11th November, we celebrate Remembrance Day.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year 1918, an armistice was signed, ending the "war to end all wars," after more than four years of continuous warfare. November 11 was set aside as Remembrance (Armistice) Day to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during the war in order to ensure a lasting peace.

In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring the 11th November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute's silence at 11 am on the 11th November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Why is the Red Poppy the symbol of Remembrance Day?

Worn on Remembrance Day (11 November) each year, the red

poppies were among the first to flower in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium in the First World War. In soldiers' folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground.

Our Catholic Identity focus for the coming week is: to focus on Remembrance Day and why we need to celebrate this day.

A new prayer resource provided by CEO Sandhurst called, ‘Prayer in a Recontextualising Catholic Dialogue School’ has some short, thought provoking readings about prayer. I will add a couple of these to the Catholic Identity Report in the newsletter.
