T

his strategy marks the beginning of a new journey for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. My role as Chief Information Officer for the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) provides a unique opportunity to share resources and make investments in health Information Technology that benefit all partners in Hamilton and our region. Leading hospitals in North America are adopting technologies that make it easier to provide high quality care and enhance the patient experience. In order for us to keep up with changes in patient and provider expectations we too must embrace these

technologies and reap the rewards that come with them. This strategy outlines the direction that we are going to take and is designed to provide a new vision and perspective on what is possible. Our initial focus will be to get the foundation right so that we then make targeted investments resulting in new capabilities that will enable us to provide the best in quality and safety in all of our services.

ur hospital system has a reputation for outstanding quality of care, a culture willing to change to achieve excellence in clinical outcomes, and innovation that attracts talented residents, educators, and researchers. As we move forward, advances in technology provide the opportunity to make changes in the way we serve our patients and provide care. We must embrace these technologies in order to continue to be a leader focused on serving the changing needs of our community. Implementing new technologies, such as the modernization of our hospital information system, will require patience, sacrifices and change in the way we deliver care. However, if we achieve our health Information Technology vision we can expect world-class quality outcomes, safety and patient experience. Let’s continue to design the healthcare system of the future and continue to live the legacy of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

Transforming Care…SJHH’s Information and Communication Technologies Vision for 2018

Our Health Information Technology Vision is guided and inspired by the SJHH’s Strategic Plan (Mapping Our Future) as well as the mission, vision, and values of SJHH. As a whole, our organization identified five priorities in our overall strategic plan that provide direction for all of our services across the continuum of care, including:

• Transforming How We Work • Innovation and Research • Engaging Our People • Breaking Down Barriers

By implementing re•fresh as our information technology

health strategy, we will work to renew a promise: to bring together the most advanced technology and education to transform healthcare for the future. We will accomplish all of these things supported by a visionary approach to information technology.

Why is Health Information Technology so critical to

our future?

As changes in technology, consumer expectations, clinical practice and health system management continue to impact the hospital landscape, it will become more challenging to be a healthcare leader without making significant investments in Health Information Technology (IT). It will be difficult to: • Meet and track safety and quality care objectives • Attract talented practitioners, researchers, educators,

residents and students

• Support multi-disciplinary care and collaboration initiatives

• Be a leader in innovation and ultimately keep research and teaching accreditation

• Manage costs and effectively report on hospital and clinical performance

Four strategic priorities will enable the Health Information

Technology Vision for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton

Building and maintaining a strong foundation to

enable new models of care

Investing in the advancement and modernization of the Hospital Information

System and key foundational technologies that support a more robust and flexible

IM/IT environment.

• Modernization of hospital information system (HIS)

• Update infrastructure to enable future objectives; ensure core applications are current • Establish an IP Communications Network capable of supporting wireless IP devices across

all hospitals

• Develop and implement advanced capabilities of the HIS (Computerized Provider Order Entry, Closed Loop Medication Administration) and an ambulatory EMR

Improving access to information and services

Focusing on bringing information closer to providers, researchers and patients through

mobile and remote access to key applications and information.

• Make clinical applications accessible on provider smartphones and tablets • Provide patients with access to their health information

• Allow patients to perform standardized transactional services online (i.e. registration, request appointments, retrieve pre-operative information, etc.)

• Encourage patients to manage their own care by certifying health management tools (i.e. apps) and providing access to credible health information

Improving information use

Using Information Strategically through analytics or by providing better information

to providers at the point of care.

• Develop data infrastructure to enable analytics for reporting and research

• Implement technologies which enable analysis of assets, provider workflow and patient throughput to support clinical processes optimization, quality improvement and resource management

Enabling better collaboration between providers and between providers and

their patients.

• Make it easy for providers to communicate and collaborate through Voice Over IP (VoIP) and enhanced virtual care opportunities

• Give patients the ability to communicate with their care teams electronically
