The University of Tasmania has

recently re-confirmed its position

as one of Australia’s best universities

as ranked by the internationally

recognised QS World University

Rankings for 2015.

The international ratings agency

evaluate more than 3000 universities

for academic reputation, employer

reputation and research impact.

We help you become

who you want to be

Our University provides both pre-service

and in-service degree studies for teachers.

The University is committed

to creating and passing on

the knowledge that leads

to discovery, innovation

and progress.

Teaching plays a key role in this ambition by improving the educational outcomes and life aspirations of students.

Education and schooling are such an essential part of today’s society. So, the role and commitment of teachers has never been more important. Teaching itself is changing. Flexible, technology-led study options also attract a different teaching style and range of teacher skills.

To be a registered teacher in Australia, you need to have passed a teacher qualifi cation course, and will need different requirements for primary, secondary and adult/applied learning environments. The University of Tasmania (UTAS) provide both pre-service and in-service degree studies for aspiring or current teachers and has over 100 years’ experience in teacher training.

Our focus of face-to-face teacher preparation (undergraduate) occurs in Launceston. We also offer our postgraduate degree face-to-face in Hobart (MTeach). We offer a full undergraduate Bachelor of Education Primary and Early Childhood course at the Cradle Coast campus in Burnie.

There is also a full offering of courses online. Teacher education and the professional development of teachers are a strong focus for research at our University. We also have a history of achieving excellence in the research area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) which are key learning areas of focus in education.

Studying Education and Teaching

Who Studies Education and Teaching?

Education and Teaching students tend to have wide interests and very personal passions.

The common link they all share is an underlying desire to be a positive infl uence on their students’ lives and their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Very often inquisitive and attentive, many of our graduates are attracted to teaching’s collaborative and collegiate environment and the central role teachers play in a community.

You will need a reasoned and critical perspective. You also need to be personally resilient and committed to your own lifelong learning and education. During the course, you’ll develop the ability to focus on planning and establishing a positive and supportive learning environment. You’ll also learn effective communication, student learning, motivation and engagement.

Professional recognition

Graduates will be qualifi ed to teach in public and private sector schools in all states and territories of Australia, being eligible for teacher registration with state teacher registration boards. In Tasmania, this will be with the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board. Our education degrees are internationally recognised for their professional training.

Career opportunities

with a teaching degree

Our wide range of Education and Teaching degrees provide a broad spread of experiences and workplace competencies. Specialist studies can focus your career even more. A few career possibilities include:

– Coaching

– Childcare Centre management – Communications

– Early childhood teacher

– Health and Physical Education teacher

– Online teaching – Personal trainer

– Primary teacher (Public or Private) – Secondary teacher (Public or Private) – Sport and recreation leadership – TAFE/Applied learning teacher – Teacher’s aide

– Training roles (e.g. Defence, emergency and law enforcement)

– Wilderness adventure leader

Your study opportunities

To launch your career as a teacher, you must complete a four year bachelor degree in education, or a three year bachelors degree and two year Master of Teaching. If you want to pursue a passion or want more specialist knowledge and expertise in a chosen fi eld, a degree with honours can give you fascinating career opportunities. Studying a particular area of interest can focus your learning, research and communication skills.

A single degree in an education subject usually takes four years and requires the successful completion of introductory, intermediate and advanced level units.

Double or Combined degrees

Double degrees offer exactly that: a double degree merges the core requirements of two different degrees. This lets you graduate with the equivalent of two degrees faster than it would take to do two separate degrees. Double degrees can give you greater depth in more than one area and more career options. If you are academically capable and want to challenge yourself, a double degree is an ideal way to get the most from your time at university. However, the Bachelor of Education is only offered as a single degree focusing solely on its core study area.

Honours

We offer Honours in year 4 of a Bachelor of Education meaning you can start your career in your specialist area.

It can also lead to postgraduate study and a career in educational research or academia.

Alternative entry pathway

If you don’t have the prerequisites for direct entry into an Education or Teaching degree, an alternative entry pathway helps you get the qualifi cations you need to get into the course you want.

Bachelor of General Studies – Education Pathway

The Bachelor of General Studies – Education Pathway is the fi rst year of the Bachelor of General Studies and is designed as an alternative entry pathway to Education degree courses.

In the fi rst (foundation) year, students study units which provide the skills and knowledge related to their further study in Education and are provided with additional support to maximise their chances of success. As students also study two fi rst-year units from the Faculty of Education, they will receive credit towards their Bachelor degree.

The role and commitment of teachers

Your study experience

The learning experience at

the University of Tasmania goes

beyond lectures and tutorials.

Study Abroad

Professional Experience

placements

All students who enrol in a Bachelor of Education degree must undertake Professional Experience placements. You’ll need to do these in a variety of educational settings, full-time, for a number of weeks each year (up to 90 days in total depending on the degree). These placements are designed to enable pre-service teachers to become familiar with the child care and education context.

Your placement will involve active observation, participation and engagement in teaching and learning activities. You will be supervised and managed by a tertiary qualifi ed educator (your Colleague Teacher).

You’ll be assessed against focus areas within the Australian Teaching standards. If you’re studying for the Adult and Applied Learning degree, you’ll also be expected to volunteer in a VET setting for the equivalent of one day per week, during semester time. This will ensure you are better able to put theory into practice.

Many students go onto further employment with their placement providers.

Online study

Online learning and teaching make it easier to get your teaching degree. They allow you to study without being on campus, at your own speed, and are suited to different learning and teaching styles.

At our University, the e-Learning Support Unit provides many online programs and units that are equivalent to those available face-to-face.

Where available, you’ll be able to enrol in both on-campus and online units within the same semester.

All units in Bachelor of Education (Primary), Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood), are available fully online.

For the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education), Bachelor of General Studies (Education Pathway) some units are available online.

Additional learning resources

We want to help you get the most from your time with us.

You’ll be taught by subject matter experts. These are people who are passionate about what they teach. They’ll encourage you to share questions and perspectives, inside lectures and outside the classroom. Our administration team are available to discuss unit choices, degree planning, credit and advanced standing. Dedicated Student Advisers are also available for advice, support and assistance with academic studies or things affecting your personal wellbeing or circumstances. We also provide online tutorials to help with your research assignments and develop your skills faster.

An Education degree is typically a four year degree. We also offer part time, face-to-face, online and mixed mode study options. There is a range of units available over the spring break.

Scholarships

Each year, the University offers more than 900 awards, across all academic areas. The awards are based on merit and equity and reward excellence and improve access for new or continuing students. Application details and selection criteria for each award are clearly noted for each award on our website and within the online application. See: utas.edu.au/scholarships-bursaries

Financial matters

When you commence study with the University of Tasmania in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), you must contribute towards the cost of your tuition. The amount you pay depends on which units you study and the payment method you choose.

Student contribution amounts

and rules

To be eligible for a CSP you must be an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or hold an Australian Permanent Resident Visa. The student contribution is calculated based on the units of study that you enrol in. Each unit is assigned to a ‘band’ according to the subject area it comes from. The band tells us how much to charge for one Equivalent full-time student load (EFTSL), equivalent to 100 credit points, or 100% load. Most units at the University of Tasmania are 12.5 credit points (0.125 EFTSL), so to calculate the cost of a unit we multiply the contribution amount for that designated band by 0.125. For example, the student contribution amount for a 12.5 credit point Nursing unit of study would be $6152 × 0.125 = $1076.63.

A typical four-year degree is made up of 32 units.

HECS-HELP

The majority of university students across Australia choose to defer their student contribution until after they have commenced in the workforce. You can do this by taking out a HECS-HELP loan. HECS-HELP is available to eligible students enrolled in a CSP. This loan can cover all or part of the student contribution amount. You are eligible for HECS-HELP if you are a Commonwealth supported student and an Australian citizen or the holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa.

Under this option, the Commonwealth Government pays the loan amount directly to the University of Tasmania. Then, when your salary reaches the minimum repayment threshold, you will make compulsory repayments through the tax system.

Other costs

Students are required to pay a student services and amenities fee (SSAF). In 2015, the fee is around $340 for a full-time undergraduate student.

Part-time students are charged on a pro-rata of study load undertaken. Students who are unable to pay the fee up-front can defer all or part of the fee through an element of the Higher Education Loan Program, known as SA-HELP.

The fee contributes to funding student services such as legal and health services, counselling, and sport and recreation activities.

You will also need to cover costs such as textbooks, materials, art supplies or

2015 student contribution by band

1. For pre-2010 students, the maximum annual student contribution amount that may be charged for Education and Nursing units is $4696.

2. From 1 January 2010, the maximum annual student contribution amount for commencing Commonwealth supported students undertaking Education and Nursing units of study has been increased from the ‘national priority’ rate to the Band 1 rate.

3. The increased maximum annual student contribution amounts affect only students who commence their course of study at a higher education provider on or after 1 January 2010.
