Measles, Rubella (MMR)
You must have documentation of receiving 2 MMR vaccinations or 1 MMR and 1 positive titer (shows immunity) to Rubeola.
Hepatitis B Vaccination
The Hepatitis B vaccination is a series of three (3) injections given over a six month period. The cost ranges from $40 to $200. If you wish, you may sign a declination form and not take the series. The area of work you are going into puts you at risk for coming into contact with infected blood and bodily fluids, so think seriously about refusing the protective vaccination.

Varicella Immunization
You must have documentation of receiving 2 doses of the vaccination or have a positive
blood titer showing immunity to chicken pox. Having had the disease is not proof enough,
submitting a physician’s statement that you had chicken pox will not be accepted.
Tetanus (TD)
You must have had a tetanus booster within the past 10 years.
Tuberculosis Skin Test (PPD)
You must have had 1 negative TB skin test or (for positive reactors) a negative chest X-Ray.
This is a prerequisite for acceptance into the Medical Assistant program, After acceptance you will be required to obtain another negative TB skin test to satisfy externship site requirements.

OSBI Background Check Information
As a part of the Moore Norman Technology Center’s Medical Assistant Career Major, you will be required to practice your skills in facilities requiring background checks. Before you can be assigned to a hospital, clinic, or other facility for your clinical or externship experience, you must have a background check that includes a criminal offender, sex offender and violent offender check. If your criminal history is positive, the facility will then review your personal criminal history background. Each facility has the right to accept or reject any student based on information shown in the criminal history background check. Moore Norman Technology Center cannot overrule the decision of the clinical or externship sites. Criminal offender, sex offender and violent offender reports must be obtained no earlier than January, 2014.
An applicant, whose background check does not come back clear, will be considered on a case by case basis, for admission to the Medical Assisting Career Major.
If you are refused a clinical placement, you will be dropped from the Career Major.
If you have lived in Oklahoma less than one year, you must submit the information from the state where you previously resided as well as the OSBI report. These reports must also include information regarding sex offender history.
It is your responsibility to obtain your record from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and provide it with your documentation. The OSBI office is located at 6600 North Harvey off NE 63rd, Oklahoma City, OK, one block west of Broadway Extension, Building 6 in the Broadway Executive Park. The telephone number is 879-2689, extension 0. The cost is $19.00; OSBI accepts cash or credit card. They will not accept checks. You will be required to bring your social security number, date of birth, full name and payment with you to be able to complete the process. If you get your background check from the OSBI office, bring the original document; photocopies, faxed copies, or other forms cannot be accepted. If you are a MNTC Hire student, the DHS background check with this program will meet the
requirements for this career major. Contact Becky Wood with any questions at (405) 364-5763 ext. 7365.
If you have any questions, contact the Information and Enrollment Center at 364-5763 extension 7260.

NATURE OF THE CAREER MAJOR
The Medical Assistant career major progresses through a specific sequence of courses. Students will be assigned specific courses of study, often as many as three or four courses, to be completed simultaneously. The curriculum is designed to build a foundation of
knowledge, reinforce that knowledge with activities and skills, and then build another, more complex layer upon that foundation. Due to this, it is essential students’ progress through this curriculum in a manner that is prescribed. Students must complete certain areas of the
curriculum before beginning more complex units. The courses, organization and sequence, are outlined on subsequent pages.
Each individual course must be completed with a 70% grade or higher in order to continue in the career major. A student may have no more than two opportunities to successfully
complete each course. Failure to pass a course in two tries will result in being dropped from the career major.
Each course syllabus identifies prerequisite material that is required before beginning that specific course. The student must have successfully completed the prerequisite material with a 70% or better, and have successfully completed all skills or activities required in those prerequisite courses before beginning the subsequent course. Be aware that some courses are instructor-led and are only scheduled once per semester. Failure to satisfy prerequisites may require a student to sit out a semester or be dropped from the career major.
To complete the career major in a timely manner, it is essential that all students adhere to the schedule of assignments and due dates. Although all students learn in different manners and at different paces, the discipline of medical assistant requires individuals be able to manage multiple duties and meet multiple deadlines. Failure to complete material by the identified due date may result in earning a score of zero for that material. Continuing to fall behind in work and assignments may result in a student being withdrawn from the career major due to failure to progress.
COLLEGE CREDIT OPTION
The Medical Assistant Career Major at Moore Norman Technology Center has been approved for 38 hours of college credit toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assistant from Oklahoma City Community College.

Medical Assistant Career Major
“Employment is projected to grow by 31 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand will stem from physicians hiring more medical assistants to do routine administrative an dclinical durites so that physicians can see more patients”. US Dept of Labor,
Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012-2013 Ed.
Nature of the Work
Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of physicians, and other health practitioners running smoothly.
The duties of Medical Assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner’s specialty. In small practices, Medical Assistants usually are “generalists,” handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area, under the supervision of
department administrators.
Medical Assistants perform many administrative duties, including answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping.
Clinical duties vary according to State law and include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Medical Assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. They instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, authorize drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, draw blood, prepare patients for x rays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures, and change dressings. Medical Assistants also may arrange examining-room instruments and equipment, purchase and maintain supplies and equipment, and keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean.
Work Environment
Medical Assistants work in well-lighted, clean environments. They constantly interact with other people and may have to handle several responsibilities at once. Most full-time Medical Assistants work a regular 40-hour week. Some work part time, evenings, or weekends.
Employment
Medical Assistants held about 483,600 jobs in 2008. Almost 62 percent worked in offices of physicians; about 13 percent worked in public and private hospitals, including inpatient and outpatient facilities; and almost 11 percent worked in offices of other health practitioners, such as chiropractors and podiatrists. The rest worked mostly in outpatient care centers, public and private educational services, other ambulatory healthcare services, state and local government agencies, medical and diagnostic laboratories, nursing care facilities, and
employment services.
Training, Other Qualification, and Advancement
Most employers prefer graduates of formal Career Majors in Medical Assistant. Such Career Majors are offered in vocational-technical high schools, postsecondary vocational schools, and community and junior colleges. Postsecondary Career Majors usually last either 1 year, resulting in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years, resulting in an associate degree. Courses cover anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as keyboarding, transcription, record keeping, accounting, and insurance processing. Students learn laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic procedures, pharmaceutical principles, the administration of medications, and first aid. They study office practices, patient relations, medical law, and ethics. Accredited Career Majors include an internship that provides practical experience in physicians’ offices, hospitals, or other healthcare facilities.
of Health Education Schools (ABHES). In 2005, there were 500 Medical Assistant programs accredited by CAAHEP and about 170 accredited by ABHES.
Formal training in Medical Assistant, while generally preferred, is not always required. Employers prefer to hire experienced workers or certified applicants who have passed a national examination, indicating that the Medical Assistant meets certain standards of competence. The American Association of Medical Assistants awards the Medical Assistant credential; the American Medical Technologists awards the Registered Medical Assistant credential.
Medical Assistants deal with the public; therefore, they must be neat and well groomed and have a courteous, pleasant manner. Medical Assistants must be able to put patients at ease and explain physicians’ instructions. They must respect the confidential nature of medical information. Clinical duties require a reasonable level of manual dexterity and visual acuity.
Medical Assistants may be able to advance to office manager. They may qualify for a variety of administrative support occupations or may teach Medical Assisting. With additional education, some enter other health occupations, such as nursing and medical technology.
Job Outlook
Employment of Medical Assistants is expected to increase 31 percent much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2018 as the health services industry expands because of technological advances in medicine, and a growing and aging population. Increasing utilization of Medical Assistants in the rapidly growing healthcare industries will result in fast employment growth for the occupation. In fact, Medical Assistants is projected to be the fastest growing occupation over the 2008-2018 periods.
Employment growth will be driven by the increase in the number of group practices, clinics, and other
healthcare facilities that need a high proportion of support personnel, particularly the flexible Medical Assistant who can handle both administrative and clinical duties. Medical Assistants work primarily in outpatient settings, which are expected to exhibit much faster-than-average growth.
In view of the preference of many healthcare employers for trained personnel, job prospects should be best for Medical Assistants with formal training or experience, and particularly for those with certification.
Earnings
The earnings of medical assistants vary, depending on their experience, skill level, and location. Median annual earnings of wage-and-salary medical assistants were $28,860 in 2010. The middle 50 percent earned between $23,700 and $33,500. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $20,600, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $39,570.
Related Occupations
Workers in other medical support occupations include dental assistants, medical records and health information technicians, medical secretaries, occupational therapist assistants and aides, pharmacy aides, and physical therapist assistants and aides.
