Associates of Art in Criminal Justice

RE:

The current Del Mar College catalog incorrectly lists the total semester hours required to earn the Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice as "66·67" (pg. 190). The Criminal Justice program would appear to be out of compliance with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirement that AA degrees cannot exceed 66 Semester Credit Hours.

As the Committee knows, the core requirement for Natural Sciences is two courses. One of the two courses must include a lab. The catalog lists both Natural Sciences electives in the Criminal Justice degree and identifies the elective in the fourth semester as requiring a lab. The error occurs in the first semester listing of "Approved Natural Science Elective".

The verbiage in the first semester Natural Science elective accurately reflects that no lab is required, however, the laboratory hours are incorrect. The catalog lists "0-4" laboratory hours. To be correct, the catalog should show laboratory hours required as

"0",

Correction of this error will show that the Criminal Justice program is, and has been, in compliance with the maximum semester credit hour requirements of the THECB.

The Criminal Justice program asks that the Curriculum Committee approve the correction ofthis error. cc: Dr. larry lee, Interim Dean, Business, Professional, and Technology Education

Department of Public Safety Education ...(361) 698-1724

The purpose of the Criminal Justice program is twofold: (1) to offer educational

opportunities to the student who intends to seek employment in the field of

criminal justice, including both law enforcement and corrections, upon completion

of the associate degree; (2) to offer the transfer student the equivalent of the first

two years in a bachelor’s degree program at a university. To fulfill senior college

requirements, the student should consult an advisor.

FSEM 0101 is required for any first-year student enrolled in English 0307 and

is strongly recommended for any student needing a developmental course.
