Event Reports - Wrap Up - Kath Harris

Wednesday Run July 24 2019

Barry and Sharyn Rowe's Recent Purchase - MG GT

Nine cars and sixteen participants headed off through White Hills on the newly completed four lane carriageway, on to Huntly , where we deviated off at Trickey's Garage, heading north, then cutting accross the back of the Seven Sisters, where we witnessed the huge piggery farming enterprise operating near Bagshot.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, the verdant country looked splendid. The occasional wattle tree was in bloom, reminding us, Spring isn't far away.

Goornong

Boxsters.

Tribute to Pioneers - Former Saw Mill Engine, Goornong.

We then turned right at the Drover's Arms Hotel heading for Barnadown and Ellesmere, where we turned across the side of the Barnadown Gold Mine.

This recently sealed road was quite smooth and not yet destroyed by heavy traffic. This took us to our destination at Huntly.

We were surprised how smick the newly refurbished Huntly Hotel looks, after an eighteen month closure.

Pressoe’s Rambles

Graeme Jenkins

, Happy new financial year to you all.

Well once again the AGM was another fantastic night, organised by Kath Harris, as there was plenty to eat and some great door prizes given out.

We secured our committee for another year, with the only change being the appointment of Chris Beale as our vice president, so welcome to you Chris and thank you to all the other committee members for their ongoing support of the club, and let’s do it again for another year.

A big congratulations to Leo Hassett for being our Clubman of the Year and very well deserved, as he is a true example of what the award stands for.

Gaye and myself have started planning our rally for later in the year and it is all going well with all the expected disagreements and opinions along the way.

So buckle up, and enjoy the club events and friendships that have been formed as we cruise into another year.

Thanks very much Graeme

President Graeme Jenkin's Report

Welcome everyone and thanks for coming along tonight.

I hope you all have enjoyed the past year and made the most of what the club has to offer. We have had another bumper year, with lots to do and plenty of roads to travel and we’ve checked into some fantastic and interesting places and eateries.

It has been pleasing to see some new volunteers this year and also all of the regular leaders continuing to front up and lead us around this fantastic area that we live in.

First up I would like to thank the current committee for their contributions:

Rod Thomson for his guidance as Secretary Marianne Healey for her years as Treasurer

Alan Healey for cleaning up the memberships Kath Harris for her efforts in organising events

Brendan O'Donoghue for the most comprehensive newsletter, we have ever had Geoff Houlden for being our CAMS delegate

Roger Huthnance, for taking care of the website.

Give them a big round of applause, please.

Although, there have been a lot of highlights this year in our club, there has also been quite a few lows. With members battling illness and the sad loss of five treasured members that will be very sadly missed.

Then I sat down the other night and thought about the past year, the thing that stood out to me above all else was how well all of our members support those in times of need This to me is what being in a club is all about and you should all feel very proud.

So on behalf of the committee I thank you for your ongoing support of the club, I look forward to many more great outings in the coming year and I close by asking you to raise your glasses to:

John Somerville, Peter Tangey, Ken Beale, Wayne Gregson, and Brian Williams. Thank you,

(11)

Clubman of the Year

One of the reasons we are gathered here tonight is to announce who will be Clubman of the Year as selected by your committee.

This year was a tougher one to select than other years as there were quite a few candidates in the running, but there can only be one winner.

This member's ongoing support and promotion of the club over the years leaves no doubt in

my mind that he is a very worthy recipient. He has always been a bloke that gets into all aspects of the club, offers a helping hand, and

has a great sense of humour.

At this stage there are probably 10 of you thinking… shit, I fit that description…. I’ve got this in the bag - clear the mantelpiece!

But this bloke wouldn’t even expect to be getting this award tonight. Because he puts the same effort in every year - from cooking BBQ s - stepping up when there is no leader for a run, as well as offering to do a few himself throughout the year, he’s always good for a dress up if that’s required and he can certainly tell a tale.

Leo Hassett - Clubman of the Year 2019

He would be one of the most consistent members in our club over a long period and is well deserving of this special award.

So without further ado put your hands together, for Leo Hassett.

2018-2019 Events Wrap Up - Kath Harris Events Coordinator.

12 months ago I sent out my first Events update for the newsletter stating I had big shoes to fill coming off the back of our events queen Gaye. While I’m not sure anyone could ever fill those shoes, I do hope you have all enjoyed the last twelve months and found an event or two that has involved what we all love a scenic drive, fabulous food and wonderful company with maybe a game or two thrown in for good measure.

Let’s have a quick look at those 12 months; JULY:

MIDWEEK: Was run by the late John Somerville, through Maldon to Mount Franklin on the Daylesford Bowling Club

SUNDAY: Leo went out through Baringup, Creswick and Maryborough for a lovely breakfast at Ripples on the Lake

AGM: We kicked off the year with a beautiful Roast dinner and AGM here at the Pottery Function Centre, where we saw a new committee introduced.

AUGUST:

MID WEEK: Bruce Tonkin took everyone from Emu Creek to Sutton Grange then to Redesdale and Mia Mia, before the fun started, and the group were stuck in about 800 sheep, after finally getting clear they travelled onto Axedale Tavern for a lovely meal and good friendly chat.

SUNDAY: LEO HASSETT (he must know every road around C.V.) Huntly, Kamarooka, Tennyson to Lockington for breakfast at Maria’s Cafe

SEPTEMBER:

MIDWEEK: Brendan O’Donoghue departed McIvor Rd out Tannery Lane, through Sedgwick onto Elphinstone, on the old Calder through Taradale, Malmsbury and Kyneton before our destination at Tylden Junction Café.

SUNDAY: (SEPTEMBER WAS A SPECIAL MONTH WITH TWO SUNDAY RUNS)

The first Sunday run was our Special Dad’s day out organised by Brendon and I. Everyone took a plate to share with a coffee at the park at the Nagambie Weir, we put the men through the wringer with a plumbing puzzle and mystery sock items, I’m still not letting any of them near my plumbing. We then continued on a short drive past the wineries and testing the knowledge on car badges and after we found everyone we meet our guide for a tour of Seymour Heritage Railway Depot. Then some lunch and awarding of the prizes at “Araminta’s Tea Rooms” and to crown the “man of the day” Ben Hickman and to listen to some “dad jokes”

Our second Sunday run was taken by Mark and Sarah Hickman who headed out though Raywood onto Bridgewater finishing the run back in Bendigo at Mick’s fish for a scrumptious egg and bacon roll, cuppa and a view of the Lake. First timers Mark and Sarah did a great job.

(13)

OCTOBER:

MIDWEEK: One of our true team players Bruce and Janie Tonkin took everyone through Strathfieldsaye , Axe Creek, Emu Creek, along the side of Mt Alexander, to Golden Point before heading back to Harcourt, past vineyards and rolling hills, to Bradies Tavern for Lunch.

SUNDAY: David and Katrina Jobe took the group on a cruise around Davids stopping ground as a young gun. Heading out through Spring Gully crossed to Diamond Hill Road and

creatively progressed back to Sedgwick Road, continuing to the other end of Rodger's Mountain which we did in reverse then on to Newstead for breaky at Dig Cafe.

BT RALLY: This years BT Rally was well handled by Damien and Annette after being thrown in the deep in at the last minute when Brendon and I were grounded so to speak. They managed to ensure the group of about 50 people still enjoyed most of the trip across to the Yarra Valley finding the answers to questions and playing games along the way. The Rally this year was won by Greame and Gaye Jenkins who im sure have some treats in order for us all in a couple of months.

NOVEMBER:

MIDWEEK: Other than just being great Club members I’m sure Leo and Bruce are in competition, all jokes aside Leo and Ellen again led a great run from Fortunes to Axedale through Tooleen and back to the Readsdale Hotel for lunch.

SUNDAY: Brendon and I took a brief run out and around the edges of the whipstick and back into Bendigo’s beautiful Botanical Gardens for a Breakfast fit for Kings and Queens, we all enjoyed a smooth drive before indulging in bacon and eggs with a side of fruit and cereal washed down with a cuppa and juice and topped off with a quiz to test everyones

knowledge on the race that stops the nation. DECEMBER:

WEDNESDAY: Graeme and Vera took the lead heading out through Sedgwick, Sutton Grange back around Eppalock to Axedale Tavern for a great lunch.

SUNDAY: Brendon and I got you to all get in the Christmas spirit (NO GRINCH’S WERE ALLOWED) before the headed out through Baringhup West around the edge of Cairn Curran Reservoir and back into Castlemaine to Das Kaffahaus for a coffee or Hot Choc with

Breakfast

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FUNCTION: As always, a great dinner here at the Pottery Function Centre were Brendan and I organised for us to share in a Kris Kringle with a twist among approx. 100 members that were in attendance.

(14)

JANUARY:

MIDWEEK: Our trusted Leo put his hand up to again take the Wednesday lunchers on a 44 degree day, this time heading out past the racecourse to 5 ways around towards Dingee before reaching Serpentine Hotel for a bite of lunch.

SUNDAY: Andrew Bodycoat and Jeff Crabb led the Sunday run out through Sutton Grange, Elphinstone and Metcalf after a few small fix ups to the lead car, after it threw a radiator hose, we ended up back at Redesdale Rural Café for a great country breaky.

BBQ in lieu of our meeting: A well-attended event on a beautiful evening sitting by one of Bendigo’s jewels Brendon and I with several helpers organised some snags and salad before we all dug into the shared desert trays everyone brought along.

Eastlink Rally: While not a club event it was well attended by many members who joined in over 800 cars who all met up at Cruden Farm Mansion, the day that was organised by the All British Classic Car Club of Melbourne and headed up by Gayle Jenkins brother in law Rex Hall raised $58,000 for Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation for Cancer Research.

FEBRUARY:

MIDWEEK: Our reliable Bruce and Janie took a good crowd out through Tannery Lane to North Harcourt passing Mt Huthnance abd returning down the Old Calder to the Farmers Arms Hotel for a great meal.

SUNDAY: MARCH:

MIDWEEK: Barry and Sharon led the group out through Spring Gully to Diamond Hill then down the Calder to the Harcourt turn then back to Fryers Town, Metcalf and Sedgwick before finishing at the Queens Arms Hotel for some lunch.

SUNDAY: Ernie and Gayle Jenkins led the group through some beautiful countryside to Maldon to Newstead before finishing at the Stunning Bellinzona Hotel in Hepburn Springs for Breakfast

APRIL:

MIDWEEK: Leaving All Seasons Neil and Mary Rowan went out through Junortoun and Strathfieldsaye, before heading towards Emu Creek then doubling back to Lake Eppalock across the spillway on to Knowsley. Before finishing at Goornong Pub for lunch, where they ran into the Rochester car club.

SUNDAY: Brendon and I organised to start the day with a BBQ breakfast at the Lake with some games to get the blood pumping (although the only people with enough bloody pumping to get the carrots in the hole were Kathie Beale and I think from memory Wendy Cowling (they must have had the weetbix breakfast) We set off through Marong to

Laanecoorie, Rheola to Inglewood where we learnt all about Eucalyptus Distilling and enjoyed some scones jam and cream with a cuppa, Oh! and a few Easter eggs to share. Great Alpine Tour: Rob and Wendy organised another great run for approx. 23 members held over 7 days/nights, the group toured through areas such as Glenrowan, Bright, Buffalo, Mt Hotham, Tawonga Gap, Mt Beauty, Mitta Mitta among many enjoying many sights, meals and fun along the way.

(15)

MAY:

MIDWEEK: Bruce notching another run to his collection, took the Wednesday lunchers from All Seasons through Junortoun, Strathfieldsaye, Sedgwick, Sutton Grange over the side of Mt. HUTHNANCE for a break at Harcourt before returning to Bendigo for lunch at the Reservoir Hotel

SUNDAY: This run was all about the ladies/mums of the club, Brendon and I started at the Lake gifting the ladies with something small before we proceeded on a leisurely drive across to the Dig Cafe in Newstead, were we enjoyed a cosy breakfast with some fun and games. We found out some of our ladies, great mumism’s (you know when mum says something like, if you don’t stop crying, I’ll give you something to cry about. Or something like that). We also found out some great facts about our ladies. 1st prize went to Ellen, 2nd prize to Sharni and 3rd to Sarah.

We then continued onto Lavendulla where we all strolled around the beautiful gardens and rustic old buildings finding out about its history and enjoying some yummy lavender scones and lavender lemonade or coffees.

JUNE:

MIDWWEEK: Brendan O’Donoghue prepared on short notice a short and sweet run to Skydancers in Harcourt for a great Lunch, via Marong, Lockwood and Calder Alternative Highway

SUNDAY: Sunday Run 26th June, Thankyou to Andrew Bodycoat for organising a great run. I’m terribly sorry to Andrew as we were not on this run and I don’t have a report for it, I believe he did a great job albeit, a few may have got lost, it only reinforces the fact we all need to keep an eye on the cars in front and behind us.

I apologise If I have missed a run or forgotten anyone.

One thing I noticed typing this up, is that we as a club, seem to have a set group that are consistently putting their hands up to lead runs and to those people thank you and well done. Leading a run as the group I have just named, is not a hard task, set a destination plan a route and make sure there is some tasty food at the end. Take a chance, let the events coordinator know when you would like to and give poor Leo and Bruce a break. The club has 100 members plus partners, so it shouldn’t be hard.

I’ll finish off with another statement from where I started 12 months ago, hopefully we only have about a month or so of these terrible winter blues, before we start to see some blooms and greenery back on the trees and maybe some tops coming off the cars.

I would really appreciate, if members would dust off their old motoring photos - for the segment.

I can assist with the scanning / processing/ editing.

Riley RME 1.5 litre 1953 - John and Cheryl Paul.

My first recollection of a Riley, was one visiting my neighbors at Epsom in the 1950s. As a car tragic, I immediately recognised, this was quite a pukka vehicle.

Rileywas a British motorcar and bicycle manufacturer from 1890. Riley became part of the Nuffield Organization in 1938 and absorbed into British Motor Corporation in the 1950s, thus, eventually diluting the makes heritage and advanced engineering.

In the 1930s, Riley was an innovative enterprise with an advanced engineering philosophy. Its engines were sought after for many racing car specials, including ERA and Healey Silverstone. Riley achieved three class wins at Le Mans and were successful at Brooklands and other venues.

Today, the Riley trademark is owned by BMW. Ed.

(21)

Cheryl and John Paul - Riley RME 1953

This particular car has a long history, with an estimated five owners. BSCCC members John and Cheryl Paul obtained the car in 2012.

The story is that John went to look at a Fergy tractor, was smitten by the Riley and had to have it. This, not knowing much about Rileys!

Cheryl wanted it consigned to the tip, as it was a bit of a basket case. Fortunately, that didn't happen, especially, as a significant amount of money had changed hands.

Now, they have a very nice dependable classic that among other things, travelled 11000 kms to Geraldton, W.A. and return in 2016, attending a national Riley Rally. The car averaged 10 litres per Km - which is very good, as it weighs about 1.3 tonne, unladen.

The restoration of the Riley took from 2012 until 2014 - some panel beating, a paint job, tidying up the headlining by Cheryl and redoing the front seats, etc.

(22)

John now runs radial tyres, which has transformed the car in terms of its handling and roadholding.

Traditionally, the 1.5 litre Rileys were quite slow, compared to the more powerful and sought after 2.5 litre model.

At some stage in its early life, a modified 1.5 litre engine, was installed, as the original was ready to go to heaven.

This car has a secret - its engine has been worked over.

John revealed that the engine was originally prepared for a racing Riley - modifications; engine head, port and polish, high quality valve work, to allow it to run on Avgas, worked over cam shafts, Repco high compression pistons and shell bearings and is fitted twin SU carbies.

John thinks this transplant happened about fifty years ago. It is testament to the quality of the improvements, that the motor has required little attention, all these years later. The engine has four cylinders in-line, hemispherical combustion chambers and twin camshafts mounted high at the sides of the cylinder block.

Much to the ire of 2.5 litre drivers, this car has equivalent or better performance.

This car has a four speed gearbox, torsion bar front suspension and rack and pinion steering. The last of this series ceased production in 1955. Riley ceased all auto production in 1969. Thanks to John and Cheryl Paul for sharing their story, which potentially saved this car from the crusher.

P.S. I think Cheryl has developed an affection for the Riley.

FIAT 124 BC Sport Coupe - Restoration

1970 Fiat BC Sport Coupe. purchased: early 1986 Cost: $1600

Sold: August 1990 Colour: Burgundy Red

Engine:: 4 cyl., 1438 cc, belt-driven T.O.H.C., 90 BHP,DIN,Weber twin throat carb.

Top Speed: 106 -110 MPH., O-60 MPH 11.2 sec. Stdg. Qtr.18 sec. Comments;

After the Valiant Ute had done its mighty job, it was time to get into something more interesting.

I had fond memories of the my former Fiat 124 AC Sport Coupe - so this was the way to go.

This particular example was pretty rough, but unusually for a Fiat, it had very little rust and the price was OK. A fair amount of work was required to make it

roadworthy, then off to the body shop for stripping and painting.

The interior was worked on over time, using new and second hand interior fittings.

(24)

Taking a pattern off the old seats and using an old sewing machine, seats were refurbished ,including hounds tooth inserts, which looked great.

Sold in 1990, because I was lusting for an NSU RO 80. As this restoration was extensive - all costs were not recovered on sale. Sold $4000.

Volkswagen ends Beetle production in Mexico to make room for SUV. Sharay Angulo - Reuters

A ceremony marking the end of production at the automaker's plant in Puebla, Mexico - July 10 2019.

Volkswagen rolled the last Beetle off the assembly line recently.

Serenaded by a mariachi band and surrounded by proud factory workers, the final batch of the retro, rounded compact were celebrated at the VW plant in Mexico.

(25)

The original beetle and its various iterations was part of the German Economic Miracle of the 1950/ 60s, being cleverly marketed, tough, durable and with a very strong dealer and service backup.

Volkswagen produced the very last Beetle at its Puebla facility in Mexico, on Wednesday July 10 2019, marking the end of an eight-year production run for the third-generation model.

The final vehicle, will be put on display at the company’s museum in Puebla “as a lasting tribute to the automobile’s rich heritage.

In the US, Volkswagen sold nearly 5 million examples of the original Type 1 Beetle - worldwide

21.5 million vehicles.

The New Beetle first sold in 1998, selling more than 1.2 million units between 1998 and 2010. Finally, the third generation in 2011 sold over 500,000 examples.

My first two cars were Volkswagen beetles - fond memories learning the joys of oversteer and not enough power.

I have owned my Lancia 2000 Berlina for over 10 years ; I only consider selling it due to my badly injured left foot , (since age 21 y) no longer enjoying clutch work.

I have a thick photo file of the bare metal restoration at obviously great cost prior to my ownership , which will , of course accompany the vehicle when sold.

I am astounded by its performance and the sheer pleasure and exhilaration it provides, confirming its status as a true GT Sports Sedan.

Mechanically it is quite sound. (Brakes are being fully serviced now)

The interior is immaculate in Blue velvet corduroy seating, contrasting with the floor Cream carpet on top of Cream carpet.

The beautiful dashboard is of wood, as is the steering wheel. The superb Blue paintwork is barely marked.

It is indeed a true Sports & Classic GT Sedan of the first order. Price $26500 - Victor Kaye BSCCC member 0412909780
