From the Pastor’s Desk
Did you know that certainSundays take their names
from the first La n word in
the Introit, (the an. phon of the Mass). Gaudete Sunday does just that. The first words on this day are taken from Philippians and command us to “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Our
word “rejoice” was
adapted from rejoiss, a version of the Old French verb
rejoir, “to be joyful.” In English, the word “rejoice”
was originally used to mean “to enjoy the possession of” something.
Today’s scriptures speak of the priceless treasure each of us received and reminds us to be people of great joy. In the first reading, Isaiah overflows with joy and wonder. He recognizes himself as anointed and understands his purpose. He is commissioned to bring good news to the oppressed and to bind up the brokenhearted. In the responsorial can cle, Mary is equally overjoyed. She too recognizes herself as blessed and God’s goodness as infinite. In the Gospel, John the Bap st iden fies himself as the one crying out in the wilderness to make straight the way of the Lord. He recognizes himself as the one Isaiah foretold. He knows his place and his rela onship with the One who is to come. John’s role is to point to the Messiah.
Our three faithful forerunners knew deeply that they were loved by God. This knowledge bubbled within them, giving them a cause to rejoice. What about us? Do we recognize that we are loved by God? I am neither Isaiah nor Mary nor John the Bap st, but on most days I understand that I am a beloved child of God with a divine purpose….with much to be grateful about. And God lets us know in li le ways just how special we are to Him.
Just a few months ago I was steeped in prepara ons
for the 10th Anniversary concert of 9/11 with my
Chorale & Orchestra. During that me I stopped at a local Wawa to purchase a cup of coffee. As I tended
to my business, I no ced two young soldiers in military fa gues engaged in conversa on, as they poured their own coffee. It was deligh ul to
overhear them planning the surprise they were about
to bestow on their families when they walked unexpectedly in the door on Father’s day. One young
soldier stated that he longed to squeeze his li le girl,
while the other revealed how he longed to be hugged
by his own Father. The two men stood ahead of me in line and con nued their conversa on about a fellow soldier’s family, who would never know that joy, since their colleague was recently killed in ba le. What an intense mixture of emo ons, in just a few brief minutes.
As the cashier tallied their items, I told the young lady that I would pay their bill and simply thanked them for service. The look of apprecia on on their young faces was more valuable than the few dollars I had paid. While ge ng into my own van, both soldiers re-approached me to express their gra tude again, and indicated that no one had ever “done that before.” Assuming they were referring to the $8.74 I had spent, I stated that it was a small token of
apprecia on. But one soldier revealed that no one
had ever thanked them for their service, and the
gesture and words of support meant the world to them. I smiled and offered them my blessing. They were moved with profound gra tude and joy, and neither soldier was inhibited in the least, to drop to their knees in the middle of a Wawa parking lot to receive a blessing. Once again, I was moved beyond measure.
I couldn’t help to think of these young men as we con nue our prepara ons to try to broadcast our 6:30 PM Christmas Eve Mass to a remote army base in Afghanistan. As a community, we have the opportunity to express gra tude to those who serve in our military, and are currently separated from their loved ones. At this me, our technology ministry is diligently a emp ng to connect cable service from the Rectory to the Church (with Comcast’s help, of course). Our Armed Service ministry is leading the path to call for dona ons that service personnel could use (Please see last week’s bulle n). Our liturgical
From the Pastor’s Desk
ministry is planning a spectacular celebra on forChristmas. I truly believe that all of this will bring tremendous joy to our parishioners, and to those si ng in a remote army base in the middle of a desert. Now, I pray that you will do your part…Please write a beau ful le er of support….offer a small dona on….and pray for our troops diligently. All gi s and le ers must be returned to us this weekend. Please place them in the appropriate basket in the Church ves bule or Parish Hall.
Finally, if you ever deceive yourself that you have nothing to be joyful about, remember this story…that someone recently gave to me. There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, “If I could only see the world, I will marry you.” One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend. He asked her, “Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?” The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn’t expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him. Her boyfriend le in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: “Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.”
So, before you say an unkind word, think of someone who cannot speak. Before you complain about the taste of your food – Think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you complain about your husband or wife – Think of someone who’s crying out to God for a companion. Before you complain about life – Think of someone who went too early to heaven. Before you complain about your children – Think of someone who desires children but they’re barren. And when you complain about the hec c Christmas season – Think of a group of young soldiers si ng in the middle of a desert across the world, who long to celebrate Christmas Mass, but only have St. Andrew’s parishioners to celebrate with them. With a loving and grateful heart, Msgr. Marucci

Gospel Acclama on R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad dings to the poor.
Alleluia, Alleluia Gospel
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.
A man named John was sent from God. He came for tes mony, to tes fy to the light,so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to tes fy to the light. And this is the tes mony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?” He admi ed and did not deny it, but admi ed, “I am not the Christ.” So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for
yourself?” He said: “I am the voice of one crying out
in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’”
as Isaiah the prophet said.” Some Pharisees were also sent. They asked him, “Why then do you bap ze if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” John answered them, “I bap ze with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming a er me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to un e.” This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was bap zing.
The Gospel of the Lord.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit,

Home School classes are in full swing. These parents have taken on the task of teaching their children under our supervision and guidance. In December they will be teaching the Advent lesson, a lesson on family prayer, and of course, the Infancy Narra ves.
CONFIRMATION: Eighth Grade classes meet on Wednesdays at 5 pm. This year we are using a text that is very well known in Germany but has not taken hold in the U.S. It is based on the Youth Catechism (YOUCAT). We started with the existence of God and are now working through the ques on “What does God think of me and what does God want for me?” From there we will examine why the world is broken and what we can do. NOTE: To help the Eighth Graders we purchased a copy of the YOUCAT for each student. We cut costs by purchasing slightly used books in very good condi on. Please pick up your copy in the CCD Office any a ernoon a er 2:30 pm.
THE JESSE TREE:
This year the Religious Ed classes have purchased one of the St. Andrew Memorial Christmas Trees to memorialize Kate Vukicevich, the previous Director of Lifelong Faith Forma on. Kate always loved the Prophesy about the Root of Jesse, the coming of the Messiah from the line of David. We have decorated our tree with a Shoot of Jesse theme, showing the family and descendants of Jesse, the father of King David. Displayed on our tree are ornaments, made by the children, that represent the amazing ancestors of Jesus.

Bap zing Your Child: Why the stress? by Sister Guia Jimenez, RSM
I answered an inquiry in the parish office last week. The young Mom I spoke with was so worried. Why? She doesn’t have Catholics around her whom she can ask to be her child’s godparent. Her husband’s not Catholic. Ergo, his family is out. She’s from a small family. No one is a prac cing Catholic. Her co-workers? Nope. Close friends? Again, no. She already asked the close Catholic friends she does have as godmothers for her first two kids. She wants her third child bap zed Catholic as well. What she does have is a very close friend whom she describes as very Chris an and one of the most loving people she knows. The catch? She’s a Methodist. It would be easy to throw blame but the ques on is really, “Did the Catholic Church (meaning us) reach out to this growing family? Did we mentor our young people? ”
I asked myself, “How is this possible? In a world with 2 billion Catholics, 50 million of them living in the United States, about 3 million of them living in New Jersey – how is it that a mother can’t find a Catholic
godparent for her child?” About 44% of the popula on in New Jersey is Catholic. Where are they? Where are
we? Social distancing has only been in prac ce for a few months. Before that?
This Advent, let us allow God to be incarnated within us; let Christ shine from within so that others may be drawn to us, who are Catholic, in a world that is badly in need of Chris an support. In our workplaces, neighborhoods, the internet, or virtual worlds we find ourselves in during these pandemic days, how do we communicate love? How do we communicate Christ? You don’t have to ask people if they are Catholics or Chris ans to have a “God conversa on” with them. We certainly don’t want to create a bubble of ONLY Catholic friends but we can build rela onships and make Catholic / Chris an friends. We need to be a community of faith no ma er where we are. You just have to proclaim yourself as one – in both word AND most especially, in deeds. Let’s reach out to people and be a gi to others (while being shrewd and wise at the same me). The Gospel says this of Christ: "… Jesus the Nazarene, [who] was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people…” (Luke 24:19 NAB) In other versions, he is said to be
powerful in deed and word.
Let us be men and women who are powerful in word and deed in the sight of God and all the people. Let’s have more good and loving Catholics available to be godparents out there for our millennials, Gen Z’s, and the growing Genera on Alpha’s – children of millennials. Another piece of trivia, only 9% of millennials are prac cing Catholics. They are now raising the Genera on Alpha, their children. You can’t wait for them to come to Sunday Church. You have to go out there looking for them and building rela onships with them. It’s a brave new world, my friends. Let’s bring Jesus into it.
