We know our stuff!

At Lorica Insurance Brokers we understand

the data centre sector inside out. We

know all about the SLA’s you commit to. We understand the issues with security, heating, cooling, construction, fire safety and energy efficiency.

We know all about Tiers and the Uptime Institute. We know how critical it is that you meet the obligations you commit to and the consequences for your business and reputation if you don’t.

We have many clients who are data centre owners and managers. We can cope with overseas and co-location.

In addition we are on top of issues affecting data centres and are constantly tracking new developments in this field. We are also proud to be members of TechUK, the technology association and we belong to their Data Centre Group. We have unique relationships with expert insurance company providers in this field and have access to wordings which ensure our data centre clients really do have protection fit for purpose.

And because this cover is tailor made it means you are paying only for the cover that your industry specifically needs and not for cover that you don’t.

We have our very own risk control surveyor, trained in the unique features of data centres, who can visit your premises and advise you on risk prevention and business continuity planning.

Cover is available subject to the underwriters acceptance of risk. Terms, conditions and premiums will be dependent on your circumstances.

Now here’s the harsh reality

If your data centre is insured by a

standard commercial insurance policy through a regular insurance broker, chances are you are not adequately

protected against the risks your business faces. Bearing in mind that the data you

are handling is worth millions to others, you are potentially putting your business at great risk should you need to call

upon your insurance.

Most insurance brokers do not

understand data centres in any depth, nor the special insurance wordings that

your sector needs to protect it against

the unique risks it faces. Here are some examples of how you may not have the breadth of cover you think you have under your standard commercial insurance policy. The examples also illustrate the specialist risk protection

that data centres need.

“We hold a reasonable limit of indemnity, and it is after all on an any one claim basis”

That may be so, but most Professional Indemnity policies define “any one claim” as including a series of claims arising out of a single act, error or omission. This leaves many data centres vulnerable from an accumulation of claims that originate from a single loss.

“Our Professional Indemnity policy covers us for liability arising out of our negligence – surely that’s wide enough?”

The majority of policies do exactly that and only provide cover for your liability up to that of common law. But what happens when your contractual liability is greater than that of common law? How will your policy respond then?

“We have a water tight SLA – if our racks are down following loss or damage, surely that will protect us from significant financial loss?”

It may well successfully cap your liability in respect of customer down-time credits, but what happens to your bottom line if many customers cancel their contracts because of it?

“Our policy does seem expensive – my

broker informs me it’s because we need

to insure 100% of our estimated annual revenue – is that really the case?”

No – with the appropriate technology insurer they can provide you with a more cost effective approach. A flexible limit of loss solution can cater for Loss of Revenue, Increased Costs and Additional Increased Costs of Working on a chosen first loss basis.

Our data centre team

We have a small team of experts who look after our data centre clients. These individuals are professionally qualified and have many years of experience. The team is headed up by our Corporate Broking Director, Steve Cross Dip CII, who is based in our Hemel Hempstead Office. Steve understands how data centres operate and has many clients in this field.

“Neither our insurer nor our broker has reviewed our Customer Terms of

Business – does that matter?”

Absolutely! It is vital that your insurance programme consistently dovetails with both your terms of business and your SLA. The same is also true of your website. At Lorica this forms part of our best practice.

“Why can’t insurance brokers take a

more proactive approach when dealing with data centre clients?”

They can. For example, at Lorica we have our own in-house, specially trained, Risk Control Surveyor (available free of charge to our clients) and we have access to risk improvement funds with our partner insurers. In addition we are able to advise on business continuity planning for your
