Senior Happenings

Dedicated to Tolland’s Senior Citizens

Hi Folks!!

As I begin to write for May’s issue here, I am anticipating our Senior Center Variety Show which is coming up next week. I’m sure it will be fabulous! As this is our biggest fund raiser, I am so very grateful for the turnout every year, and I’m sure this year will be even bigger! I will write about it in greater detail in June’s newsletter.

Do you have treasures you no longer need? Is your house a bit cluttered? Are there items that you no longer use, that perhaps someone else could benefit from? If you’ve answered yes to any of the above questions, please know that in September (date to be determined) we will be hosting a Tag Sale here at the Senior Center. Set these items aside, and when the time comes, donate them to this event. The money that is brought in will benefit our Senior Center for items we need here…i.e. supplies for the kitchen or items that need to be replaced, etc.

This is just a follow up on the delicious Birthday Dinner celebration sponsored by Tolland Community Women – what a wonderful afternoon!! The food was scrumptious, and the entertainment, provided by the Irish Step Dancers was so fun! A heartfelt thanks to all the Tolland Community Women for their generosity and thoughtfulness and to the beautiful young girls that performed.

I’m going to resurrect our Djembe Drumming Circle. There will be a sign up sheet for those who are interested. I haven’t yet picked a day of the week for this, but I will. Also, anyone interested in learning how to shoot pool, sign up for instruction. This will be a co-ed class. If you’d like to play, but you’re not sure how, this would be a great opportunity to learn.

I’d like to work with a few of you that might be interested in planning an Open House this summer. It’s important to show our community what this Senior Center is all about. Please see me if you would like to help me out with this. Thanks in advance.

A Note About Outreach Activities

Rebecca Ellert, Elderly Outreach Caseworker

Greetings and happy, beautiful Spring!!

This being my favorite time of year, I’d love to share with you an excerpt from one of my favorite pieces of poetry written by Richard Hovey. It depicts a splendid scene, so welcome after a long cold winter.

Spring

I said in my heart, “I am sick of four walls and a ceiling. I have need of the sky.

I have business with the grass.

I will up and get me away where the hawk is wheeling, Lone and high,

And the slow clouds go by.

I will get me away to the waters that glass The clouds as they pass,

To the waters that lie

Like the heart of a maiden aware of a doom drawing nigh And dumb for sorcery of impending joy.

I will get me away to the woods...”

I’d like to share with you a notification from Hockanum Valley Community Council’s Dial-A-Ride Program. Starting April 22, 2017, they will begin to transport clients from Vernon, Ellington and Tolland twice a month on Saturday to the Manchester Mall area. Your options of stores to visit in that area will be Walmart, Christmas Tree Shop, Target, or any of the other stores in that area. Dial-A Ride will provide a ride to the store of your choice, and a return ride home. Whatever store you choose will be the store you will get your return ride back from. The bus will start doing pick-ups at your home between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and return back for you at the store between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. You must call to make reservations Monday - Thursday 8:30 – 5:00 (closed for lunch 12:30—1:30 pm) and Friday 8:30 am – 1:00 pm.

The Dial A Ride Program has made some significant changes on behalf of our senior/disabled population to make it more convenient for those of you who do not drive. And as I stated earlier in this column, “I
