The partnership between the Children’s Initiative and the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) began with the first “Application for Funding” for After School Programs by the California Department of Education (CDE) in 1999. Sandra McBrayer, Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Initiative, and Dr. Rudy Castruita, County Superintendent of Schools, made a ground breaking pledge to collaborate on a consortium application on behalf of all eligible school districts within the County. Collaborative discussions were held county-wide with other significant stakeholders in San Diego: San Diego County Board of Supervisors, San Diego County School Boards Association, 9th District PTA, Region 18 Superintendents Council, San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, the Probation Department and the City of San Diego. Through this effort, the San Diego After School Consortium was developed. The Consortium partners developed a collaborative philosophy and effective way of doing business that encouraged the partners to share resources and best practices, eliminate duplication of efforts, minimize local turf issues and work collectively to maximize resources for after school programs in San Diego County.

The approach used by the San Diego After School Consortium is a unique model in the development, management and

sustainability of before and after school programming and in the building of cross system partnerships. The size and scope of the San Diego Consortium has tremendous impact on policy and program development at the local, state and national level. Currently, 27 local school districts with more than 300 after school programs are part of the San Diego After School Consortium and receive support from the Children’s Initiative and the SDCOE.

With quality programs and dedicated advocacy, the San Diego After School Consortium has successfully secured federal, state and local funding.

ASES: After School Education and Safety Programs (K–9) are the results of the 2002 voter-approved initiative, Proposition 49. Funded by the State of California, the intent of the ASES program legislation is to encourage schools and school districts to provide literacy, academic enrichment and safe out-of-school time alternatives.

The Children’s Initiative is a San Diego based nonprofit child advocacy agency. The Children’s Initiative is dedicated to assisting children and families thrive by providing education, advocacy, cross-system collaboration, and training to

government, community organizations, schools, businesses, and parents.

The San Diego County Office of Education provides a variety of services for the 42 school districts and five community college districts in the county. Services provided by the County Office to school

districts range from district and school improvement to budget approval and monitoring.

The San Diego County Office of Education’s Administrative Support Center (ASC) is California’s second largest direct funded ASES program grantee. The ASC supports San Diego County districts with grant management, attendance reporting, fiscal management, and program evaluation. Funding from the districts’ 2% San Diego After School

Consortium fee has been used to augment training and provide technical assistance. The After School Division of California Department of Education (CDE) has placed a strong emphasis on fiscal, grant management and program compliance for all ASES grantees. Specifically, this includes ASES program attendance and fiscal accountability. As a result, this has become the top priority of the ASC. The goal of the ASC during FY 2011–2012 was to proactively provide training and site visits to ensure full compliance with California Education Code, the State Audit Guide, and Federal Program Monitoring (FPM).

In the effort to meet all ASES program and audit requirements, the ASC provided the following trainings and events:

• City Span Web-based Attendance & Fiscal Management System Training — Trained staff on use of youthservices.net application for participant data, attendance, & grant goal progress tracking.

• ASES 101 Training — Provided site level information on grant & attendance requirements, as well as best practices for programs.

• Alignment 101 Training — Provided strategies on aligning the after school program with the regular school day.

• ASES Data Management & Reporting Training — Prepared districts & site staff for CDE State mandated evaluation reports.

• Provider Meet & Greet — Forum to share best practices & increase access to program resources.

• People’s Choice Awards — Acknowledged high quality programs on behalf of stakeholders.

• Federal Program Monitoring — Trained and prepared district staff for successful FPM review.

The ASC hosted a total of 17 trainings and events, attended by over 500 after school practitioners who represented 23 San Diego County School Districts and 2 independent Charter Schools. After school program site visits are another key component of the technical assistance provided by the ASC. During FY 2011–2012, the ASC team conducted 80 technical assistance site visits to support ASES programs in the areas of program quality, grant requirements, and audit compliance.

During 2011–12, the Children’s Initiative provided technical assistance, trainings, program support and resources to 27 school districts and more than 300 After School Education and Safety (ASES) program sites.

The Children’s Initiative conducted more than 85 site visits to before and after school programs, providing technical assistance to improve program quality and share best practice approaches. The Children’s Initiative coordinated two professional development conferences attended by more than 600 before and after school staff from around the County and hosted 13 before and after school–specific professional development trainings for program staff to advance high quality program practices. The Children’s Initiative identified and secured materials and resources valued at more than $215,748.97 for local after school programs. The Initiative has built unique partnerships with local businesses

and corporations, cultural and sporting organizations and other key stakeholders in San Diego County to secure an array of resources for before and after school programs. The Children’s Initiative works with representatives from the San Diego County School Boards Association, ACSA Region 18 Superintendents Council, San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, 9th District PTA, San Diego Police Chiefs Association, San Diego County Probation and the Offices of Supervisors Greg Cox and Ron Roberts as well as other state officials. It is these relationships which provide a foundation for the sharing of resources and working collaboratively in the development of supportive programs, policies, and legislation for before and after school. The cooperative efforts of the Children’s Initiative result in a shared responsibility for the promotion and growth of before and after school programming.

The San Diego After School Consortium continually explores new and different ways to collect and share the positive impact of after school programs. Data proves that San Diego Consortium after school programs have been making a difference for children, youth and families in San Diego County for more than 15 years.

The following data was reported for students attending the after school programs in the 27 San Diego After School Consortium districts during the 2011–12 school year. The After School Consortium looks at several outcomes measures such as: increased attendance during the regular

school day, parent school admiration and participant satisfaction. We also report academic data that aligns with legislated required outcomes monitored by the California Department of Education as measured by the California Standards Test (CST) in English and Math.

Figure 1 displays the changes in CST scores from Baseline (one year before program intake) to the 2011–12 school year. English Language Arts CST proficiency results showed marked increases while Math CST results remained statistically static.

Research shows that quality after school programs can not only improve academic performance but also positively influence increased regular school day attendance. After school programs support regular school day attendance by increasing the sense of belonging at school. After school programs engage students in hands on academic enrichment activities that complement learning in the regular school day and provide socialization opportunities in a safe environment that is supervised by dedicated caring staff.

Data was examined to better demonstrate the positive correlation between the length of student participation and attendance in after school programs and increased academic performance. Data from middle school student (N= 18,002) after school program attendees was analyzed.

For English Language Arts CST scores, students who participated in after school programs for more than one year demonstrated an increased English Language Arts CST score (result was statistically significant at p<. 05). The relationship between Math CST scores and duration in the program did not show a statistically significant change.

Data was also reviewed to demonstrate that elementary students who regularly attend after school programs increased their regular school day attendance. Figure 2 demonstrates that students in Grades K–5

who attended the after school program for more than 60 days were two times more likely to attend the regular school day more often.

Making a Difference: Improving Literacy,

Increasing Student Achievement and

Supporting English Language Learners

Chula Vista Elementary School District

Chula Vista Elementary School District believes that the keys to ensuring a successful after school program are: selecting a dynamic community provider, listening to student and parent needs, offering engaging and stimulating programming that fosters learning, exploration and student growth and working in concert with the traditional school day. In collaborating with the South Bay Family YMCA, the Chula Vista Elementary School District found a partner in the community whose goal is to create a dynamic and stimulating before and after school environment that gives students the encouragement they need to succeed academically and socially.

The YMCA STRETCH program offers students academic support, enrichment, physical activity and character/social education. STRETCH utilizes small group and individualized homework assistance and literacy support focusing on meeting individual academic needs of before and after school students. Students are placed into grade level groups, allowing each STRETCH staff

member to maintain regular communication with teachers to be mindful of homework assignments, class projects and any special accommodations that need to be implemented.

A standards-based literacy curriculum is utilizing grade appropriate books and materials. Students are given their own

copy of each book to follow along while various reading strategies and accompanying activities are shared. Books are shared between the different elementary school STRETCH programs to ensure students have access a wide variety of books and materials.

With a large population of English Language Learners, many from families who are unable to help their children with homework written in English, the STRETCH program plays an essential role in ensuring that students receive the homework assistance they need to be successful. The literacy component complements the instruction students receive during the school day by reinforcing concepts, skills and lessons taught in the classroom. Due to the consistent student-centered communication and cooperation between principals, YMCA site supervisors, staff and teachers, students attending the before and after school programs in Chula Vista Elementary School District have increased their learning and academic achievement.

NASA’s Space School Musical

PRIDE Academy at Prospect Avenue School, Santee School District

Students from the PRIDE after school program in the Santee School District have been exploring outer space during the after school hours. Through collaboration between Santee School District, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Children’s Initiative, students had the opportunity to learn about the solar system in a fun, educational approach that incorporated academics with the visual and performing arts.

In NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory provided a professional development workshop to prepare after school educators on how to implement the Space School Musical curriculum. Workshop attendees received the curriculum and additional resources to share with their students. The after school educators from Santee School District took it to the next level by including a culminating event that showcased what the students learned.

After school program students participated in the Space School Musical curriculum over an eight week period in preparation for their debut on stage at the San Diego Science Expo at Petco Park and on March 24, 2012, students performed the STEM based musical in front of hundreds of people from San Diego County. Through increased visual, kinesthetic and auditory opportunities, all students were able to feel like a star and increased their self-esteem. Performing at Petco Park was a memorable learning experience that allowed students to discover new talents while increasing their curiosity about STEM. The musical production follows Hannah and Susannah as they prepare for their science fair project. Their dreamy trip through the solar system taught students about planets, moons, orbital mechanics, comets, meteors, asteroids, and much more! In addition to the STEM learning that took place, students showed increased achievement in 21st Century Learning skills of collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity.

During the 2011–12 school year, the Science Link program was expanded

to an additional 10 after school programs within five Consortium school districts — Lemon Grove, Oceanside Unified, Santee, Ramona and San Diego Unified. Created by the Children’s Initiative, Science Link is an innovative STEM enrichment program designed to engage after school students in active methods of discovery and creativity, experimentation, positive peer interaction and a better understanding of the sciences. The 21st century’s economy is creating more jobs that require not only a college education, but also many need expertise in the fields of STEM. In order to stay competitive in the global marketplace and provide after school students with the best chance to succeed in life, we must introduce students to the STEM path. Making use of the hours after school for STEM activities, gives students time to develop an interest in science, which is key to getting kids into STEM careers.

Science Link “links” science professionals, science-related businesses and science teachers to students in after school programs to provide instruction in STEM and share with the students their respective careers and education. After school programs participating in the Science Link

program also take part in intellectually stimulating math and science field trips and experiments, design and implement relevant research projects and hear from STEM guest speakers. Students explore science topics such as forensics, engineering, marine biology, meteorology, fusion, solar energy, genetics and DNA. The cumulative survey results from more than 550 students in 2011–12 indicated a broadened view of the sciences and increased interest in science related careers.

Supporting English Language Learners through After School Programs (SELLASP):

California Department of Education

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Region 9 Technical Assistance Center, in collaboration with Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) and Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), has worked over the past year on the development of the “Supporting English Language Learners through After School Programs” (SELLASP) project. The goal of this California Department of Education, After School Division 2 year project is to enhance support for English Language

Learners (ELL) in after school programs and close the achievement gap for students in grades K–12 through professional development for after school non-credentialed staff.

The above partners developed 4 half-day training modules. After school front line staff and after school coordinators participated in over 12 hours

of SELLASP trainings. The trainings focused on research based strategies for teaching ELL students, how best to support and build the skills of ELL students and active modeling of the strategies. The 25 participants from San Diego Consortium school districts included representatives from Chula Vista Elementary, Escondido Union, National, San Diego Unified, San Ysidro, South Bay Union and Sweetwater Union School. San Diego after school staff provided feedback and suggestions to enhance the modules and represented the voices of after school staff.

In 2012–13, the final year, the SELLASP project will conduct training-of-the-trainer workshops in 6 California counties. The team will also develop a SELLASP website which will feature online training modules and resources that are accessible to after school program staff statewide.

During the 2011–12 school year, more than 130 XTRA Weekly subscriptions were provided by the Children’s Initiative to before and after school programs within 16 Consortium school districts. XTRA Weekly is a one of its kind web-based educational curriculum that utilizes current, compelling, national news articles to stimulate learning and help our students be more aware of current events. Through engaging lessons in reading, writing and critical thinking students improve their literacy and fluency skills. Lesson plans are aligned with the California Common Core Standards and include a For the Instructor page, providing after school staff strategies to facilitate discussions and engaging English language learners. XTRA Weekly publishes 32 downloadable weekly lesson plans specifically designed for after school programs.

Lemon Grove’s Extended Day Program (EDP) has recently implemented some new and exciting clubs into their already stimulating after school programs at six schools. San Altos Elementary School’s EDP was one of the first schools within the Lemon Grove School District to add club programming for their students. Each staff member develops and conducts 8-week enrichment clubs based on student interests and/or on topics that students have not been exposed to yet.

The most well-known club at San Altos’ EDP is “Step,” led by Davina Bowie, a member of Step teams as a child and in high school. Step is a form of percussion dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. “Once I showed them one step, they just wanted to learn another and another,” she said. “I remember how much fun I had as a kid doing Step.”

Beginning in 2010–11, the San Altos EDP Steppers started with 15 students who first performed for a Lights On After School event. The other EDP students and parents loved what they saw, and the Step team grew to 48 students in 2011–12. The team developed and choreographed a performance that focuses on anti-bullying. School faculty and community members were so impressed with the anti-bullying message that the EDP Steppers developed that they were invited to perform at school assemblies across the district, talent shows, community events, and were even interviewed for the community’s online newspaper, the “Lemon Grove Patch”!

Being a part of the EDP Step Team has given the students a sense of

belonging, team work, empowerment and accomplishment. It provides daily exercise and additional healthy habits the students are engaged in while also building their self-confidence. The Steppers understand that in order to be a successful Step team, they must all be committed and responsible as a team. In return, the students’ hard work pays off in the form of praise and positive affirmations they receive from parents, staff, peers and community members. With all the attention the Steppers have received in the past year, they really feel like stars. A second grade student on the team said, “I think we’re going to be famous one day!”

Understanding Youth Culture

Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School,

Oceanside Unified School District

Recruiting and retaining middle school students in after school programs requires very intentional programming that takes into consideration youth voice and provides cutting-edge enrichment opportunities. Once the regular school day ends at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, hundreds of middle school students eagerly dash over to the after school program. The program at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, implemented in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside, recognizes the developmental needs of middle school youth and uses innovative strategies to attract students and keep them engaged. Through a variety of enrichment offerings, staff provides meaningful and rewarding experiences for students to explore their world and consider their roles in society. The clubs focus on the unique needs of middle school youth and allow them to

express themselves creatively and participate in meaningful activities that help shape their lives. The clubs are structured and have clear guidelines in place, which is crucial to students as they try to understand and learn about limits within society. The staff has created a strong partnership with the school administration and as a result they work together to provide quality enrichment opportunities that best meet the needs of middle of school students.

In addition to targeted academic assistance, students participate in a wide variety of clubs that rotate every six to eight weeks including, but not limited to: Journalism, Money Matters (Financial Literacy), Digital Arts, Cooking, Performing Arts/Dance, Torch Club (Leadership), Keystone (Junior Leaders Program) and Triple Play Sports Program. The students have the freedom and flexibility to choose which enrichment clubs to participate in since the staff highlights each club’s offerings during “Club Day”. During “Club Day” staff set up booths to promote the variety of club offerings, which empower students to make decisions regarding their enrichment opportunities.

Touching Minds, Shaping Futures Conference

During the 2011–12 school year, more than 600 before and after school staff representing 16 Consortium school districts attended our Touching Minds, Shaping Futures (TMSF) conferences. Created and coordinated by the Children’s Initiative, this twice yearly, free conference is the only one of its kind in San Diego providing professional development for before and after school staff. Line staff, site supervisors, program coordinators, teachers, administrators and district personnel gather for these unique conferences designed to improve the quality of before and after school programs and staffing. TMSF provides interactive, high quality workshops facilitated by experienced out-of-school time or subject matter experts. Individual workshops focusing on academics, physical fitness, gang prevention & awareness, enrichment, recreation, program supervision and behavior management are offered. Attendees receive practical and beneficial information and curriculum regarding best practice ideas which support student-centered academic assistance and promote social and cognitive growth and development for all students.

In spite of cool temperatures and showers on November 19, 2011, more than 300 before and after school Rock Stars gathered together for TMSF XXIV: After School Rock Stars. Throughout the day staff took part in current best practice trainings, received programming resources, learned strategies for increasing student achievement and implementing creative enrichment programming as well as ways to increase their own learning and skill development to be more effective before and after school staff. The Los Altos Elementary School

Extended Learning Day Steppers from the Lemon Grove School District kicked off TMSF XXV: Peace, Love, After School, which was held on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Their rousing performance emphasizing an anti-bullying message resonated with attendees. More than 330 before and after school line staff, site supervisors, administrators and school personnel attended workshops, participated in enrichment and recreation classes and networked with other colleagues to broaden their knowledge and skills to

Amp Up Middle School Conference Rocks!

Region 9 Technical Assistance Center

The Region 9 Technical Assistance Center for After School Programs partnered with the California After School Network to host the 2nd Annual Amp Up Middle School Conference on November 2–4, 2011. Amp Up is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of middle school students in after school programs. Amp Up spotlights the unique academic, developmental, social and enrichment needs of middle school students. San Diego After School Consortium members from the following districts participated in Amp Up: San Diego Unified, Valley Center-Pauma Unified, Oceanside Unified, Cajon Valley Union, Poway Unified, Vista Unified, Lakeside Union and Escondido Union.

Practitioners and researchers from across the nation and experts from San Diego County offered more than 60 workshops, designed to increase participants’ awareness and knowledge of delivering high quality after school programs to youth that focus on rigor, relevance and relationships. Stedman Graham, M.Ed., educator and author, headlined the Amp Up Conference as the keynote speaker. Graham inspired participants, personally and professionally, encouraging afterschool educators to increase graduation rates and prepare youth to be successful in a 21st century global workforce by tapping into their talents and passion. Nicole Yohalem, M.Ed., from the Forum for Youth Investment, a national leader in youth development research and policy, offered a keynote address sharing current research on the value of youth engagement.

The Region 9 Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) partnered with local leaders in after school programs and youth to showcase our unique after school culture and put San Diego’s after school programs in the spotlight.

Poway Unified School District (PUSD) shared their promising practices in their workshop, “Culminating Events to Amp Up Your Program”. PUSD practitioners described the culminating events that students work towards for weeks, including the annual district-wide Robotics Competition, Duct Tape Fashion Show and Amazing Race Challenge. Youth from Poway Unified School District also offered a glimpse into their perspectives on after school programs, through multi-media mash-up centerpieces that adorned the ballroom.

Sweetwater Union High School District’s Chula Vista Middle School (CVMS) excels in leading by example. After school educators at Chula Vista Middle School work together as a team to infuse their program with dynamic enrichment opportunities and set a positive tone. At Amp Up, CVMS facilitated a team-building workshop, “Making Your Team the ‘A’ Team.”

The Amp Up Conference is dedicated to walking the walk and embracing youth development as integral to the success of high quality middle school after school programs. RTAC recognizes youth as today’s leaders and engage youth in all aspects of the conference. Youth, in partnership with adults, delivered workshop sessions, produced an educational and entertaining video that premiered at the conference, and provided all of the audio/visual services for the conference.

Connecting Students to Art

Art Link brings art experiences to after school students throughout Consortium school districts in San Diego County. Students participate in photography, painting, jewelry making, pottery, drawing, mosaics, etc. Local volunteer artists are recruited to share their talents, expertise and passion by leading art classes that are linked to academic standards thus providing students with enrichment and learning. Art Link exposes students to diverse art experiences promoting self-expression, ingenuity, problem solving, critical thinking, goal setting and social skills. The Art Link program supports after school programs in identifying and securing artists, providing art materials and supplies and showcasing student art work

Art Link was developed by the Children’s Initiative with the knowledge that art education stimulates students’ creative expression, builds self-esteem and improves academic achievement. During the 2011–12 school year, Art Link program sites included: Chula Vista Learning

Using Art to Learn About the World

The International Children’s Art Exchange (ICAE) is an exciting program for after school students to share their art work with students around the world. This unique program provides after school students: an opportunity to learn about other cultures, share their interest and love for art and increase their knowledge about geography and history. Students craft their art around themes such as world peace, family, community, traditional festivals or costumes, or their favorite ways to have fun. Programs talk about where the art is from, discuss cultural and country habits and customs, highlight similarities and differences in art and education and create bulletin boards and showcase walls to spotlight the art. After school art students also often become pen pals with the student artists from other countries, furthering the learning and sharing.

The Children’s Initiative submitted 140 pieces of local student art to the ICAE in 2011–12. Before and after school programs which contributed art work to the ICAE were: Taft Middle, Pioneer Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Pershing Middle, Marston Middle, Rolando Park Elementary, Golden Hills, Marshall Elementary, Chancellor William McGill School of Success (San Diego Unified School District), Kids’ Care (Carlsbad Unified School District) and Mar Vista Middle School and Granger Jr. High (Sweetwater Union High School District). The Children’s Initiative collected and distributed student art to our partner schools from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Slovakia, Switzerland and the USA.

high quality after school programs, engage stakeholders, inspire program providers and acknowledge high quality elementary and middle school ASES programs. On behalf of San Diego County stakeholders high quality elementary and middle school ASES programs were acknowledged in the following categories:

• Community Collaboration — The ASES program works with community organizations to enhance program offerings and program quality.

• Enrichment Opportunities — The ASES program provides unique opportunities in the areas of Fine Arts, Physical Fitness/Recreation, Health and Nutrition, Career Preparation, Service Learning and/or Youth Development. • Academic Alignment — The ASES program partners with the regular school day to achieve academic goals in Math,

Science, Language Arts and/or Homework Assistance to promote student success. • Site Supervisor of the Year — Exceptional commitment and leadership.

• Partnering Principal of the Year — Exceptional support and partnership.

ASES program participants including students, parents, teachers, principals, staff, and community members were encouraged to submit nominations and advocate for their favorite programs. Over 200 nominations were submitted. A committee of stakeholders reviewed the anonymous nominations and gave each nomination a score based on Merit, Originality and Impact on Youth. Nominations with the highest scores moved on to round two and were reviewed in the same way, by different committee members. Winning nominations were chosen based on the highest scores and a consensus among committee members. On June 8, 2012, the ASES People’s Choice honored thirteen award recipients. Seventy after school educators attended the event. Lemon Grove School District EDP Steppers formed an anti-bullying stomp routine. Two representatives from the California Department of Education After School Department joined in celebrating high quality after school programs honoring award recipients. Local San Diego businesses showed their support of San Diego County after school programs by contributing approximately $4,400 of in-kind donations — including raffle prizes for participants, Lakeshore Learning Store donated all category award prizes and Legoland California Resort donated a program fieldtrip as a grand prize raffle.

Connecting to Community

The Children’s Initiative secured and distributed more than 4,000 tickets for before and after school students and their families within 15 Consortium school districts during the 2011–12 school year. Students attended the ballet, theatrical performances, and sporting events. Students attend special performances such as: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Russian Masters-The Firebird, The Nutcracker, Annie, Disney On Ice, School House Rock, Harold & the Purple Crayon, Flat Stanley Jr., Traditions of Christmas, Circus Vargas, SDSU Wind Symphony and the Mainly Mozart Festival. Before and after school students also attended the San Diego Thunder (semi-pro) football games, San Diego Sol basketball games and the San Diego Padres baseball games.

The Children’s Initiative has developed strong community partnerships with production companies, sports teams and clubs to ensure that before and after school students have the opportunity to expand their horizons and participate in arts, cultural and sporting events. Partnerships include: Feld Entertainment Inc., Tabares Entertainment, California Ballet, City Ballet of San Diego, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, San Diego Academy of Ballet, Christian Community Theatre, San Diego Junior Theatre, San Elijo Dance & Music Academy, San Diego State University School of Music & Dance, Mainly Mozart, San Diego Padres, San Diego Thunder and San Diego Sol. The donated tickets make it possible for before and after school students and their families to get out into San Diego’s thriving arts and sporting community to enjoy many enriching and educational experiences at no cost.

Art Projects!

More than 5,600 ResMed bags were distributed to after school programs throughout the county. The ResMed bag donations are made possible by St. Germaine Children’s Charity and their community partner ResMed, a local developer and manufacturer of products for sleep-disordered breathing. Students and programs use the donated bags as backpacks, book bags, resource and equipment bags and for student art projects. Programs have incorporated ResMed bags into an art activity, helping students create their own one-of-a-kind, custom ResMed bag.

October 20, 2011 was Lights On After School. Lights On is a nationwide celebration of the positive impact after school programs have on students, families, and the community. The San Diego County Board of Education signed a resolution honoring October 20, 2011 as Lights On After School

Day. The resolution recognizes after school programs as critically important in: keeping children safe during the after school hours, providing dynamic and relevant academic and enrichment opportunities and supporting working families.

San Diego County Board of Education members and Extended Learning staff members participated in presenting resolutions to after school programs in seven districts. Board Member John Witt presented the resolution at Madison High School in San Diego Unified School District. Board Member Jerry Rindone presented resolutions at Chula Vista Middle School in the Sweetwater Union High School District and Castle Park Elementary in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Board Vice President Mark Anderson presented the resolution at San Marcos Middle School in the San Marcos Unified School District.

Positive Parenting Workshops

Fallbrook Union Elementary, Lemon Grove, San Diego Unified and San Ysidro School Districts’ after school programs hosted Positive Parenting

workshops for their before and after school program parents. The Positive Parenting Program curriculum provided by the Children’s Initiative is a research-based parenting program that has been shown to promote family harmony, reduce parent-child conflict, foster successful peer relationships and prepare children for successful experiences at school. Workshop topics include: Effective Parent/Child Communication, Conflict Resolution/ Positive Discipline, Anger/Stress Management and How to Stay Out of Power Struggles.

In 2011–2012, the Children’s Initiative expanded the project to an additional nine after school programs, serving more than 350 parents. The Children’s Initiative provides after school Consortium districts with curriculum, trainers, childcare and food to provide free workshops to parents

immediately following the after school programming day. The cumulative survey results from more than 300 parent responses indicated increased confidence in raising their children and ability to communicate rules clearly to empower their children and families.

Elected Official ASES Site Visit

On May 3, 2012, Staci Ignell from the Office of Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher visited an After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program at Valley Elementary, Poway Unified School District. Each year the Children’s Initiative hosts elected officials at after school programs throughout the county to provide elected officials with firsthand observations of the value before and after school programs provided to students, parents, schools and the community. Each visit showcases the wide variety of services and programs offered at exemplary programs such as academic and tutoring assistance, enrichment activities, physical fitness and recreational games — all within a safe and nurturing environment for all students.

The Bookman

More than 20 before and after school programs in Borrego Springs, Chula Vista, Escondido, Lemon Grove, Mt. Empire, Oceanside, San Diego, Sweetwater and San Ysidro school districts added new and used books to their program libraries with support from The Bookman. A well-rounded before or after school library can provide students with opportunities to increase their reading skills, expand their imaginations and further their exploration of new interests. Increased and consistent reading provides limitless academic benefits to students. This unique collaboration between the Children’s Initiative and The Bookman provides before and after school programs regular access to a variety of books including early readers, young adult novels, biographies and reference books. By building a robust and wide-ranging program library, before and after school programs can develop a passion for reading and learning in students grades K–8.
