IMM

FOC launched its new collection during the IMM in Cologne, January 2006.

1597 sconce by Janne Kyttänen was awarded the “INNOVATION AWARD COLOGNE 2006”.

Dutch Catwalk Foundation

In 2006, The Dutch Catwalk Foundation launched its first book about the Dutch fashion industry. A special selection of people received a free copy of the book and FOC was commissioned to design a bookmark to promote the book.

Rapid Manufactured Textiles

Invented in 1999 by Jiri Evenhuis, these textiles have ever since been in constant evolution: improved materials, surface finish and new software have all enabled more efficient manufacturing

The latest results are the functional coating experiments of the textiles with various metals, such as gold and silver.

About Freedom Of Creation

Freedom Of Creation (FOC), is where cutting edge technology meets design. FOC is a pioneering design and research company specializing in Digital Manufac-turing projects for the FOC label, as well as for design labels, manufacturers, research organizations and universities.

Since 2000, the extensive research conducted by FOC in Rapid Manufacturing has resulted in innovative and successful new commercial product designs, the development of new industrial materials and software products, and has been the foundation for significant R&D projects with a range of industrial partners. FOC was founded in 2000 in Helsinki, Finland, and is currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

About Digital Manufacturing

Digital Manufacturing is the process of combining a 3D CAD file with a variety of innovative manufacturing methods, such as Rapid Manufacturing. As a result, a virtual electronic file is rendered into a solid object with a push of a button, realizing significant economic benefits for the manufacturer, such as elimination of warehouse, stock, assembly processes, extreme reduction in transportation costs and just-in-time production.

Venus

Jiri Evenhuis 2005

Venus is based on a study of single part printable structures.

The objective of this piece was to create a lightweight spherical sconce that produces a soft light, as well as a large graphic projection on the wall.

The ball-like structure consists mainly of hexagons, but cannot be created without the use of pentagons. That is why this ball is called Venus.

Designers

Jiri Evenhuis was born in 1973 in Amsterdam and graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam in 2000 as an industrial designer. Since then he is working as an independent product designer and interior architect. In all his work he is showing a strong passionate and personal approach.

In 1999 he invented Rapid Manufactured textiles, which he then further developed together with Janne Kyttänen. In the summer of 2002 they co-founded Freedom of Creation in Amsterdam; a research and development company focusing on where technology meets design. After being creative director of FOC for three years he continues his career as an independent designer and interior architect and remains as a freelance designer at FOC.

Janne Kyttänen was born 1974 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. He started his industrial design studies at the Escola De Disseny, Elisave in Barcelona -96. He then moved to The Netherlands to continue his studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amster-dam. He graduated in the spring of 2000 from the same Academy.

Right after his graduation he was offered a freelance position as a product designer and 3D visualizer at one of the leading industrial design agencies in The Netherlands, Sinot Design Associates. During his 2 year stay at SDA, he was involved working for clients in the banking, public transport, aviation, consumer electronics and cosmetics industries.

During his studies Janne proved the potential of using Rapid Prototyping techniques as manufacturing tools and introduced a line of Augmented Reality based Rapid Manufactured products as his thesis for graduation (1999-2000). The project was sponsored by the Human Interface Laboratory, of the University Of Washington and Belgian prototyping company, Materialise. This project laid the foundation for FOC and Janne registered the company in Helsinki, Finland 2000

Janne’s passion for science and technology are reflected in his designs and he is always looking for ways to mix different disciplines in his work and push the envelope of innovation as far as possible. His work has been awarded with numerous design awards including, Red Dot Design Award 2005 and Interior Innovation Award 2006. www.jannekyttanen.com
