With our online system, registration has never been so fast, easy and convenient! Online registration is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To use this system, you must have an Account ID and Pin Number. In-person registration starts at 8:30 am at the Member Services Desk at the Athletics Centre. You must have a Family membership which includes your children to receive the member rate for children’s programs.

We have changed our registration process. You can still register for your favourite programs online or in person, but we are now allowing registration year-round. this means you can register for programs sooner to ensure your place. Membership Descriptions

adult: Ages 18+ and not a full-time student senior: Ages 55+ (Proof of age is required)

senior Family: Two adults each aged 55+ (Proof of age is required) Family: All members of the immediate family who reside at the

same household, including 2 adults and all dependants under the age of 18 and still living at home. (Youth 12 to 15 years of age must take part in the mandatory Teen Fitness Orientation (page 16). Family members over 18 must show proof that they are a full-time student from a recognized college or university. Registered Trent students are not eligible under family memberships.

student (18+): Full-time students who are 18 years of age or older

and who have a valid full-time student card from a recognized university (other than Trent), college or high school.

Youth/Child (0 – 17): Pre-school aged children through 17 years.

Youth 12 to 15 years of age must take part in the mandatory Teen Fitness Orientation Program which allows unsupervised access to the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre. Youth aged 16 and older can access the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre without adult supervision.

FITNESS AND LIFESTYLE

STATE-OF-THE-ART FITNESS CENTRE

The Athletics Centre’s bright, modern fitness facility includes a 12,000 sq. ft. cardio loft and weight room with state-of-the-art strength and cardio equipment. From elliptical trainers and bikes to treadmills, rowing machines, and even a Jacob’s Ladder, we have it all. The cardio loft also boasts a large stretching area complete with medicine balls, body bars, hand weights, mats and stability balls. The weight room provides access to everything from machine weights to free weights. While working out, you can listen to music, tune in to the flat screen televisions or take in the picturesque views of the Otonabee River from two levels.

FREE FITNESS CONSULTATION

AND ORIENTATION FOR MEMBERS

New to the gym and not sure where to start? Make an appointment with one of our certified personal trainers for a free fitness consultation. During this session a personal trainer will work with you to determine your individual fitness needs and goals as well as create a plan to help you reach those goals. Orientation to the cardio and weight equipment will help ensure that you understand how to use the equipment safely and effectively. At any time, our fitness attendants are available to answer questions or provide instruction on how to use the cardio and weight equipment.

As an AC member you have full access to a wide-range of group fitness classes. From yoga and Pilates to bootcamp and group cycling, our classes are designed to suit all fitness levels. Each class is taught by a certified, experienced and caring fitness professional. Group fitness participants are ensured a safe yet fun class designed to meet your fitness needs and goals.

All group fitness classes are free for community members. Trent University students can participate in all group fitness classes by purchasing a group fitness pass for $30 per term or $55/year. Drop-in fitness classes are 45-55 minutes in length unless otherwise specified. Group fitness classes run on a first-come, first-served basis. With the exception of Zumba and Cyclefit, there is no need to sign up, just drop in and try a class today!

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS*

BOOtCaMP at tHe BaRRe

Add a twist to barre! Take ballet technique and combine it with yoga, pilates, and muscle toning exercises to burn calories and strengthen your whole body. Enjoy a routine with amazing music that will motivate you to quickly and safely reshape and elongate muscles. No dance experience required.

BOOtCaMP

With alternating segments of aerobic and muscle conditioning, this high-energy class will push you to new limits. This is a high-intensity workout designed to challenge your whole body.

sCUlPt n’ BURn

A class geared to a variety of fitness levels, this is a great workout that combines aerobic and muscle conditioning using weights and dynamic exercises to tone and strengthen your whole body.

CiRCUit CHallenge

A total body workout using functional exercises to strengthen and tone all muscle groups. You will move from station to station and perform a variety of drills using equipment like dumbbells, weighted bars, bands or your own body weight in traditional strengthening exercises like push-ups, squats and planks.

siMPlY stRengtH anD tOne

A beginner level strength and muscle conditioning class using a combination of dumbbells, weighted bars, body weight exercises and elastic bands to tone and strengthen your whole body. This is a great class for beginners, anyone with joint or mobility issues or anyone wanting a pure and simple strength class.

CYCleFit/CYCleFit & sCUlPt

From beginner to advanced, this high-energy and vigorous aerobic conditioning class will challenge you using a variety of cycling drills to burn calories and keep your muscles in shape. This is a great way to get all the benefits of outdoor cycling indoors. Definitely one of the best cardio activities out there! CYCLEFIT & SCULPT combines high-energy cardio with muscular strength and conditioning.

nia

Nia is a sensory-based movement class that creatively blends martial arts, dance and healing arts. Enjoy giving your mind, body and spirit a wonderful and nourishing workout.

steP

This energetic, choreographed aerobics class will get your heart pumping, blast calories and strengthen your muscles. With a combination of multi-directional movements, this workout will leave you feeling great.

On tHe Ball

Focusing on core stability and strengthening, you will use the stability ball to perform exercises to improve strength in your abs and back. Improving your core stability through exercises performed on the ball will help to improve your overall balance and posture.

ZUMBa

Ditch the traditional workout and join the party! Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring.

ZUMBa gOlD/ZUMBa lite

Zumba Gold takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of beginner Zumba enthusiasts, those who are just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle, and the active older participant, while keeping all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for: zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere!

BODY Fit

A full body toning workout. We will make the use of light weights and other equipment. Modifications will be made to accommodate various fitness levels.

An intense workout targeting glutes, abs and thighs.

YOGA & PILATES

In addition to the great line-up of group fitness classes, the Athletics Centre at Trent is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive yoga and Pilates programs in the city. With the most yoga classes offered of any fitness centre in town, all members will be sure to find a yoga class that fits into your schedule.

HatHa YOga

Hatha yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on specific postures and breathing exercises to relieve stress, relax and rejuvenate.

FlOW YOga

Flow Yoga takes familiar yoga poses and sequences them together to create a fluid yoga practice that integrates breath and movement.

gentle YOga

As its name suggests, gentle yoga is less strenuous than other yoga classes and is suitable for those who are looking for a more relaxed form of yoga.

POWeR YOga

Find your strength, build stamina and sweat it out! In this class Hatha postures and breathing techniques are used at a faster and more intense pace for personal self-challenge.

Yang/Yin YOga

A class combining energizing, yang (dynamic) postures that build strength, balance, and flexibility, with slow, restorative, yin (passive) postures that promote deep relaxation, while lengthening connective tissues that surround muscles and joints. This class is a perfect balance of energizing dynamic flow and deep, peaceful relaxation.

PiYO

PIYO is a unique blend of strength training and core conditioning. A perfect combination of pilates and yoga set to vibrant music designed to effectively improve functional training and dynamic balance. This is not your typical class! It is all about energy, power and rhythm, unlike anything you’ve ever done before!

PURe Pilates

Focusing on core conditioning and stability, this class combines strengthening, flexibility, mobility and relaxation. A must for anyone looking to find balance in their workouts.

POWeR Pilates

Focusing on core conditioning and stability, this class takes your Pilates practice to a higher level. This class uses more intense moves to strengthen your core stabilizing muscles.

BABY AND ME

PaRent BOOtCaMP WitH BaBY

No need for hand weights in this class - you’ve got your baby! You will be lead by a qualified instructor through a series of exercises that incorporate your baby. This is a great way to bond with your child while getting a workout.

All group fitness classes for 50+ members are FREE with your membership. Non-members can join any fitness class with the purchase of a day pass.

BOOMeRs at tHe BaRRe

This is an invigorating, aerobic, safe workout that combines elements of ballet, yoga and pilates exercises at a ballet barre (or the back of a chair). Barre exercises rely on your own body weight for resistance (bone building) and the moves will challenge your core stability and balance (falls awareness). No “tutus” required and no dance experience needed to enjoy this class!

seniORs stRetCH/YOga

This program combines gentle stretches and strengthening exercises to improve balance, coordination and overall health. Modifications are offered throughout with special concern for each participant. All exercises can be performed sitting in a chair or holding on to a stability bar.

seniORs stRengtH

A class geared to seniors to help strengthen the muscles in the body. Exercises are performed in the fitness centre and are appropriate for all fitness levels. Learn how to lift weights and enjoy meeting others in a group setting. Great for those with or without weight training experience. Everyone will be encouraged to work at their own pace.

Heart Wise

The Athletics Centre is proud to be a partner with the Heart Wise Exercise Program, a network of community organizations who work with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to provide exercise programs so individuals can exercise regularly to prevent or limit the effects of living with a chronic health condition.

about the Heart Wise exercise Program:

• Identifies exercise facilities and classes that are suitable for individuals with or at risk of developing a cardiovascular or chronic health issue.

• Helps individuals choose exercise facilities and classes that are “heart” friendly. We identify our “Heart Wise Exercise Programs” with the Heart Wise Exercise logo. • Encourages regular, daily aerobic exercise.

• Encourages and incorporates warm up, cool down and self-monitoring with all exercise sessions.

• Allows participants to exercise at a safe level and offers options to modify intensity.

• Includes participants with chronic health conditions – physician approval may be required.

• Offers health screening for all participants.

• Has a documented emergency plan that is known to all exercise leaders, including the requirement of current CPR certification, phone access to local paramedic services and presence of an AED.

Many of the Athletics Centre’s state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities are available to rent at a competitive price. Such facilities include the gymnasium, Justin Chiu Stadium, fitness studios, beach volleyball courts, outdoor playing fields, Allan Marshall Pool, and more.

AQUAFIT

Our dynamic Aquafit program is open to both members

and non-members. We offer a wide variety of classes

throughout the week. Please check the Group Fitness

Schedule for specific days and times. Classes are included

in your membership. Non-members can participate in

any of our land- and water-based fitness classes by

purchasing a day pass.

aQUaFit

Regardless of your fitness level, you can get a great workout in the water. Your instructor will offer plenty of modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of the moves, and you’re always free to go at your own pace. Using a flotation belt will help you stay afloat, or you can go without to really keep your heart pumping throughout the class.

DeeP WateR aQUaFit

(with shallow water option)

This low-impact class is held in the deep end of the pool. Participants use a variety of buoyancy devices to help strengthen core muscles and bring temporary relief from

muscular and joint pain.

aQUasiZe tO eneRgiZe

This program is specifically designed for older adults and integrates exercise science using the properties of buoyancy and resistance of water in a user-friendly way. Program includes a variety of aquatic moves to help participants improve balance, flexibility, overall body strength and cardio vascular conditioning. With a focus on “why” and “how”, exercise is safe, effective, enjoyable and a complement to activities of daily living.

aQUa tHeRaPY

Our Aqua Therapy class is designed specifically for those who are experiencing injury rehabilitation and/or chronic conditions such as arthritis, join pain, muscle tightness and lower back issues. Our qualified instructor will guide you through a series of movements to allow for healing and strengthening thereby promoting joint stability and improve range of motion.

Please note that there is a maximum number of 6 participants for this class. Please check to see if your insurance provider will cover Aqua Therapy for your injury and/or illness.

Aquafit with ATTITUDE! Aqua Boot Camp is a fantastic workout in the water that challenges you in a unique combination of fitness and athletic training involving water aerobics, interval training, strength and power development, muscular endurance training, modified plyo-metrics, and flexibility. All fitness levels and swimming abilities are welcome. Come to work hard and have fun!

Pool Rules

Please abide by the rules when using the Allan Marshall Pool: • Appropriate bathing attire is required.

• All individuals who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper in the pools. • All swimmers must shower with soap and water before entering the aquatic area. • No food, drink or gum is permitted in the aquatic area (only non-breakable

containers containing water are permitted).

• Outdoor footwear and strollers are not permitted anywhere on the pool deck (including seating area).

• Those with open wounds or communicable diseases are not permitted in the pools. • No spitting or spouting the pool water.

• No running on the pool deck.

The AC does not permit the use of outside equipment such as inflatable toys, water wings, floating swimsuits, and PFDs in the pools. Goggles, swim caps, flippers, and hand paddles are permitted. Please contact the Aquatics Supervisor if you have questions.

aC sWiM test POliCY

In order to utilize the deep end, diving board and Tarzan Rope during Public Swims, individuals must successfully complete the Swim Test. Individuals are only permitted to attempt the Swim Test once per swim. Those who are unsuccessful in completing the Swim Test are encouraged to practice and attempt again on another day. The Swim Test involves a foot first jump into the pool from the deep end wall, with a safe recovery to the surface followed by a 25-metre unassisted front swim (uninterrupted and consistent the full distance) to the shallow end wall without stopping or touching the bottom. Please note that Lifeguards will stop swimmers mid-way through a Swim Test attempt if the swimmer becomes weak or tired.

age aCCess POliCY

Children ages 6 and under: must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian

who is at least 16 years of age. The parent/guardian must remain within arms reach of the child. Maximum two children per parent/guardian.

Children ages 7 to 9: have the opportunity to demonstrate comfort in the water by

attempting the AC Swim Test. Those who are not successful in completing the Swim Test must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age, who remains within arms reach. Maximum four children per parent/guardian. Those who are successful in completing the swim test may swim without being accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian (parent/guardian must remain on the pool deck).

Children ages 10 to 12: must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is at least 16

years of age who remains on the pool deck.

WARM THERAPY POOL

Our state-of-the-art Swimex therapy pool in the Athletics Centre is the only one of its kind in the region. In the resistance pool, a powerful and consistent current is created to provide resistance for swimming, exercise or therapy.

the therapy pool can be accessed in two ways:

DROP-in geneRal Use

The therapy pool is open to members and drop-in swim pass users on a drop-in basis for general enjoyment. The current will not be available at this time. Please note that there is a maximum of 10 swimmers allowed in the Therapy Pool at one time. Check the pool schedule for available times.

BOOKings

Athletics Centre Members can book the therapy pool for 20 minute periods in order to use the current for walking, running, or swimming while experiencing the benefit of warm water. Bookings can be made at the Member Services Desk a maximum of two days in advance.

AQUATICS

PRIVATE / SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS

Private Lessons are designed for swimmers who require individualized teaching, or who are having difficulty with specific strokes, skills or techniques. These lessons are tailored to suit the swimmer, and will focus on areas specific to the individual. Private Swimming Lesson registration can be done online or at the Member Services Desk. Participants with similar swimming abilities are ideal for Semi-Private Lessons. If you would like to book Semi-Semi-Private Swimming Lessons with one or two others, please contact the Aquatics Supervisor at (705) 748-1432. Maximum participants: three/class. All participants must be present at the time of registration.

Our unique Stroke Improvement Lessons are designed specifically for students who are having difficulty learning stroke technique, or who are experiencing coordination and endurance weakness with their strokes. Our spring school mini-camps are offered to elementary school children in any grade, and feature a full-day of indoor and outdoor activities to encourage skill development and healthy lifestyles. Teachers and classes can choose modules which complement their current school activities and the interests of the students. Module options include use of the swimming pool, climbing wall, gymnasium and surrounding fields and forests. The camps are available in May and June of 2015, or other times by special request.

Learn how to use the strength conditioning and cardio equipment safely. A personal trainer will provide a complete orientation of the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre and guide you through a variety of exercises to build a program that suits your growing body. Youth ages 12 - 15 are required to register for the Teen Fitness Orientation upon purchase of a youth or family membership. Successful completion of this program allows youth to workout in the fitness areas without adult supervision.

(Ages 12 and up)

Members and non-members of the AC can enjoy access to the rowing tank once they successfully complete a learn-to-row orientation. A qualified rowing coach will guide you through an orientation in the tank. The orientation will cover proper rowing technique, blade work as well as introduction to both sweeping and sculling. This is a one-time orientation and after successful completion, participants can access the tank to practice their new skills, knowledge and abilities in the tank during operating hours.

ROWFit

Looking for something different for your fitness? Try rowing! Gather your friends or register on your own to row on a weekly basis in our premier tank. We start with an orientation to learn proper rowing technique, blade work and an introduction to sweeping. You will build on those skills as our qualified rowing coach guides you through a series of rowing workouts over the following nine weeks of the session. Participating in this program allows you access to the tank during our regular operating hours too. Some weeks will conclude with an info session presented by experts and professionals from the local rowing community.

nUtRitiOn anD Wellness seMinaRs

When it comes to health and wellness, nutrition plays a key role and is more important than we may think. For the first time, The Athletics Centre is offering a 12 week seminar series in nutrition and wellness. Learn which foods you should eat in order to help you reach your health and fitness goals and how to sort through the media hype surrounding fad diets. This program is led by instructors who are certified Can-Fit-Pro Nutrition and Wellness professionals.

This program is led by a certified personal trainer and triathlon enthusiast. You will train twice a week in the pool, the cyclefit studio and explore the nature trails around Trent University on your run. ‘Homework’ workouts will be assigned for you to keep up your training throughout the week on your own time.

This program is open to people who are comfortable in the water. No experience is necessary for the cycle fit or running portion. Please note that the swimming portion of this program may be cancelled some weeks due to swim meets being held in the pool.

CliMBing Wall

All AC members may enjoy full access to the climbing wall once you have taken a one-hour orientation to learn the basics. With instruction from one of our qualified climbing instructors, you will learn proper “tie in” techniques as well as proper belaying. We provide all climbing equipment with the exception of shoes.

intRODUCtiOn tO CanOeing

This 3-hour program provides the beginner paddler with basic safety and operating information, as well as practice time for canoeing: including entering and exiting the canoe, paddling position, stopping, landing and more. At the end of the program paddlers will be able to use the skills learned for recreational paddling with a partner in close proximity to the shoreline, and in fair weather conditions. There are no pre-requisites for this course.

gUiDeD PaDDles

Join us at the Wildrock Canoe Centre at the AC this summer for a leisurely paddle on the Otonabee River. Meet fellow paddlers as we explore the features of the canal and learn about the history of the river.

Pre-requisites: Please note that all participants must have completed the safe canoe program, have any level of ORCKA paddling certifications or proof of equivalent experience to participate in the Guided Paddles. Pre-registration is required and will be available at the Member Services Desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Limit of 20 people per session, maximum two people per canoe. Price is per visit.

CanOe PROgRaM POliCies

• All sessions subject to weather and water conditions.

• Any participant under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is 18 years of age or older. Limit of 1 child per parent or guardian (must ride in one boat). • All participants must sign a waiver prior to participation. • Lifejackets are required to be worn at all times.

• Comfortable clothing and footwear with a heel are required. Bare feet and flip flops are not permitted. A hat and sun protection is highly recommended.

• Do not bring items that cannot get wet. • Please bring your own water and a snack.

• Swimming is not permitted at any time during any canoe program or session.

aC Waitlists

Individuals are strongly encouraged to place themselves on the waitlist for specific programs that are at capacity. The AC utilizes the waitlists to schedule additional lessons or classes when possible, or to contact individuals when spaces become available in high demand programs.

Class tRansFeRs

There are no fees to transfer a participant from one class to another in the same session. Any difference in cost as a result of the transfer is charged, and there are no refunds of fees for transferring to a lower priced class. No transfers take place after the second lesson.

PROgRaM CanCellatiOns

The Trent Athletics Centre reserves the right to cancel or transfer classes due to insufficient registration. Should classes be cancelled due to power failure, weather, pool fouling, etc., the department will schedule extra instructors during the final weeks of the session where possible to help ensure program quality. We cannot schedule makeup classes due to time and space restrictions.

WitHDRaWals & ReFUnD POliCY

• Up to seven business days prior to the first class: Refund issued, less an administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum.

• Less than seven business days prior to the first class: Refund issued only with medical certificate, less an administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum.

• After first class: Pro-rated refund issued with a medical certificate less an administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum.

• One day clinics, crash courses, exam fees, recertification courses, or materials: No refund.

lOCKeRs

Day-use locker contents must be removed daily by facility closing time.

Locks and contents will be removed from any lockers that are not emptied by facility closing time.

Rental lockers can be rented by community, alumni, and Trent staff/

faculty members. These lockers can only be rented for the duration of your athletic membership and must be cleared out by the expiry date of the locker rental. Members must supply their own locks. Locks and contents will be removed from any inappropriately occupied locker.

Hst

All fitness memberships, personal training, and registered programs are subject to HST Fitness memberships or programs for individuals 14 years and under are HST exempt.

MeMBeRsHiP CaRDs

All members must swipe in whenever they enter the AC. Members are required to have their cards with them at all times while using the facilities and wear wristbands in all group fitness classes.

Cell PHOnes/CaMeRas

The use of cell phones or cameras is strictly prohibited in all change rooms, washrooms, and program areas of the TCSRC.

aPPROPRiate attiRe

All individuals using the TCSRC must wear appropriate athletic clothing and athletic shoes with non-marking soles. Street clothes, ripped or torn clothing, sandals, open-toed shoes and cleats are not permitted in the facility. Bare feet are not permitted unless required by a specific program. Appropriate pool attire is also required.

FaCilitY aCCess POliCY

Facility: Children under the age of 10 years must be accompanied by

a parent/guardian (who is 16 years or older) while in the building at all times.

Fitness & lifestyle Centre: Individuals age 16 and older can fully access

the Fitness & Lifestyle Centre without a parent or guardian. Youth age 12 to 15 can access the fitness centre and equipment unsupervised once they have completed the Teen Fitness Orientation.

Public and lane swimming: Children ages 6 and under must be

accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age. The parent/guardian must remain within arms reach of the child. Maximum two children per parent/guardian. Children ages 7 to 9 have the opportunity to demonstrate comfort in the water by attempting the AC Swim Test (page 9). Those who are not successful in completing the Swim Test must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age, who remains within arms reach. Maximum four children per parent/guardian. Those who are successful in completing the swim test may swim without being accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian (parent/guardian must remain on the pool deck). Children ages 10 to 12 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age who remains on the pool deck.

Registration for all Fall, Winter and Spring programs opens August 26, 2015. Registration for all aquatics and registered
