On behalf of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Workforce on National Databases, I am pleased to invite you to Advances in Quality & Outcomes: A Data Managers Meeting. This 3-day annual event for data managers will be held September 26-28 at The Westin Boston Waterfront.

The AQO conference will focus on all three Databases that comprise the STS National Database: Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, Congenital Heart Surgery Database, and General Thoracic Surgery Database. The primary objective of this meeting is to provide attendees with a variety of presentations and discussions to help them improve data collection and patient outcomes. Of particular importance this year to Adult Cardiac Surgery Database data managers is a comprehensive overview of the new data specification upgrade that becomes effective July 1, 2014.

The AQO conference is designed for health care professionals and data collection personnel who are dedicated to delivering and improving quality health care for cardiovascular surgery patients. STS members, STS National Database participants, and STS staff will present at this meeting.

STS urges all participants to be aware of their own State Board or Certifying Agency Continuing Education and/or certification requirements, particularly in regard to the length of time a certificate must be kept by the learner.

Target Audience

The target audience for this meeting is any health care professional devoted to improving the quality of care for cardiothoracic surgery patients. Encouraged to attend are data managers, physicians, registered nurses, perfusionists, and quality improvement personnel involved in STS National Database data collection. Anyone striving to improve care for cardiothoracic surgery patients through the use of outcomes data will also benefit by attending.

AQO Conference Materials

Education materials provided at the AQO conference are for the personal and noncommercial use of an individual participant. These materials may not be reproduced, published, adapted, or distributed without the prior written consent of STS.

Pre-registered attendees will be e-mailed no later than September 20 with information on obtaining available presentations. Copies of presentations will not be available onsite. If you wish to save the presentations to your laptop, tablet, or other portable device, please download the presentations in advance and come with a fully charged battery. Individual power outlets will not be available in the meeting rooms, nor will wireless Internet. For safety reasons, power cords will not be allowed to span aisles or walkways at any time.

If you would like to take notes on handouts, please print the applicable handouts and bring them with you to the meeting. The hotel has a business center where you can print for a fee.

Each attendee will be provided with a notebook that includes the agenda.

General Thoracic Surgery Database

This session will focus on the General Thoracic Surgery Database (GTSD) and will examine how to improve data collection and advance participant database coding skills in version 2.2 of the GTSD. The session will use a case-based learning format.

Objectives: Upon completion of the General Thoracic Surgery Database session, participants will be able to: • Understand what is included in the GTSD audit, how to prepare for it, and the most recent results;

• Understand the staging, diagnoses, procedures, and complication coding for esophageal and lung cancer; • Understand the diagnoses, procedures, and complications for mediastinal, chest wall, and benign esophageal

disorders; and • Improve data quality.

Adult Cardiac Surgery Database

Friday afternoon and Saturday will focus solely on the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD) and will examine how to improve data collection and advance participants’ database coding skills in the upgraded version of the ACSD that becomes effective July 1, 2014. The sessions will provide information about changes in the scope of cardiothoracic surgery practice.

Objectives: Upon completion of the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database session, participants will be able to: • Understand changes made to improve the ACSD;

• Interpret and improve understanding of the data definitions in the ACSD;

• Understand the importance of data elements and processes involved in the ACSD; and

• Define and better understand highlighted clinical procedures in the ACSD and how to code associated data elements.

We learned from the last data specification upgrade for the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database that feedback and input from data managers and vendors improves the quality of the final data version.
