Situated in the village of Bishopthorpe on the southern edge of the city the crematorium is surrounded by large mature trees with the River Ouse running alongside the Gardens of Remembrance.

The crematorium was dedicated on the 11th April 1962 by his Grace the Archbishop of York, the most reverend F D Coggan. City of York Bereavement Services team provide a caring, sensitive and high quality service for people at a difficult time in their lives. Staff are available to provide helpful advice and guidance about all aspects of funerals and memorials.

The seven acres of grounds are open to the public every day:

April to August

Monday to Saturday from 09.00 – 20.00 Sundays & public holidays 10.00 – 20.00 September to March

same as above but the grounds and chapel of remembrance close at dusk.

City of York Council is a member of the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) as well as adopting the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) Charter for the Bereaved.It is our aim to comply strictly with all statutory regulations and relevant codes of conduct.

We will do our best to meet your needs and we will:

• Provide access to the grounds and Gardens of Remembrance every day of the year.

• Organise and conduct a cremation in a sympathetic and orderly manner, respecting your need for privacy and dignity.

• Provide information and advice on how to arrange a funeral, answering any questions that families may have before making their funeral arrangements. • Recognise and fulfil your special needs

without discrimination of any kind. • Offer you a Book of Remembrance

memorial entry, set in the Chapel of Remembrance where you will be provided with a designated place for cut flowers and pot plants

• Provide a comprehensive range of memorialisation and offer a wide choice of options for the disposal of cremated remains.

• Provide, on request, a location sheet showing where cremated remains and memorials are situated.

• Set out our fees clearly and explain them to you if necessary.

• Provide the means for you to make a complaint if you are dissatisfied with the service we provide.

• Provide you with a prompt response, in plain language, to any form of communication with our staff together with the reasons for the actions taken by them.

We have a conservatory at the rear of the pub which is suitable for meetings, gatherings or functions. It will

The main crematorium chapel can comfortably seat ninety people with room for a further fifty standing. The walls within the chapel are covered with Australian walnut except for the window wall which overlooks the pond area, within the chapel stands the catafalque.

There is a smaller chapel designed to accommodate more intimate gatherings and can seat sixteen people both are fitted with hearing loops and are wheelchair accessible. Service times

To ensure an atmosphere of peace, funeral service times are every forty minutes with up to thirty minutes allowed per service. If you need a longer service then this can be accommodated but there will be an additional charge.

Music

For your music requirements an organ is provided within the main chapel with our bose sound system to satisfy the most critical ear. The wesley music system gives access to a vast library of hymns and commercially

available music. Our music library is updated weekly and can be viewed online at http:// www.wesleymusic.co.uk/musiclibrarylists/ york.php

The wesley music system offers, at an additional cost the opportunity to record services onto a compact disc for those loved ones who are unable to attend the service in person. Should you require an organist, musician or soloist to attend this can also be accommodated.

Arrival

We have two car parks, the nearest to the entrance having disabled parking bays. Inside the building you will find a comfortable waiting room with a drinks and snacks machine, water fountain and accessible toilets, one with baby changing facilities. Cremation service

A full service may be held in our chapel or you may wish to hold a service elsewhere with a brief committal at the crematorium. In both cases the coffin is placed on the catafalque.

After Committal

At the moment of committal the curtains can be drawn around the coffin if so desired and at the close of the service when the mourners have exited the chapel the coffin will be transferred into the adjacent committal room. Any floral tributes will be displayed on the lawn area adjacent to the chapel exits.

Choosing a final resting

place

When you choose to have a funeral or memorial service you will be asked what you would like to happen with the cremated remains. Responsibility for this decision lies with the person who signs the cremation to take place, although we do advise that this decision should often be shared with family and close friends.

We would like to assure you that there is no rush to choose. we aim to give families time to make the right decision and so upon receiving instructions we will gladly hold the cremated remains for up to one month

at no charge. If we have not received any instructions after one month we will contact the applicant and request instructions by a certain date.

We understand that families and friends sometimes need extra time to consider and if you require longer we are able to look after the cremated remains for a maximum of three months for a nominal fee.

Once you have decided on a resting place for your loved ones remains we will do everything possible to assist you. There are a number of options :

You may wish to take the remains from the crematorium contained either in a polytainer, casket or spun aluminium urn. Alternatively, you may wish to have your loved ones remains placed within the Gardens of Remembrance and there are a number of options:

• You can choose to scatter the remains within Palace Wood which is a communal area running alongside the River Ouse. Unfortunately, due to the proximity of the river this area sometimes floods. • You can chose to have the remains

interred within the grounds either side of the path that leads to the summer house. This lawn area is divided into sections with the interred remains placed directly into the ground and can be identified by a personalised disc marker for an additional charge.

• You can choose to have remains placed inside a memorial. There are two types available either below or above ground both holding two sets of remains. • You can purchase a grave for remains within Dringhouses Cemetery which is located off Tadcaster Road adjacent to York College. The grave holds up to four sets of remains and is purchased for a fifty year lease. A headstone to a maximum height of three feet can be fixed to the concrete beam at the head of the grave which can be supplied by any monumental mason. • You can also re-unite the remains with a

previous deceased.

If you wish, we will scatter the cremated remains on your behalf (we will need these instructions in writing) or you may wish to be present. If so please contact 01904 552071 to make an appointment convenient to yourselves.

Choosing a memorial in memory of a loved one is entirely a matter of personal choice. However, if you feel that you might gain from having a memorial our dedicated and professional staff are always here to offer advice and assistance.

Our aim is to answer your questions and clear up some common misunderstandings and to give reassurance about all aspects of cremation. If you need more information

Book of Remembrence

Displayed in the Chapel or Remembrance and comprising of four volumes, each covering three months of the year the book contains leaves of the finest sheepskin parchment, bound in calf vellum and richly tooled in gold leaf.

Memorial entries are usually inscribed in the Book of Remembrance under the date of death, but can be on any other anniversary you choose. Entries can be two, five or eight lines long with the five or eight line entry being able to encorporate an emblem such as a flower, animal, bird, badge, coat of arms or any other specific request. The entry is individually executed by hand and offers the same degree or prominence and artistic excellence as the best medieval manuscripts.

To ensure memorial entries are inscribed for the first anniversary or requested day, applications must be submitted by the following dates

April, May and June by the end of the December preceeding. July, August and September by the end of the March preceeding. October, November and December by the end of the June preceeding and January, February and March by the end of the September preceeding.

Sanctum II niche

This memorial is behind the main chapel and holds 2 sets of cremated remains. The desk top effect holds a vase with the main inscription available with a grey textured background with red relief or alternatively a red smooth granite background with embossed grey writing both types of tablet can accommodate a maximum of 80 letters (including spaces) and is available for ten or twenty years. Summerhouse memorial plaque This memorial is made from black polished granite and can be inscribed up to 96 letters (including spaces) and available for ten or twenty years. These plaques are located at the end of the walkway between the rose beds and are fixed on to the walls of the summerhouse.

Bronze memorial rose plaque This engraved bronze plaque is fixed to the raised rose bed on either side of the path going towards the summer house within the gardens of remembrance and can be dedicated for ten or twenty years. Alternatively it can be purchased on a stake and placed within the rose beds.

Granite posy vase block

These line the pathway to the rear of the general office and are made of grey granite. Each vase block holds a galvanised metal vase with the inscribed tablet and is available for dedication for ten and twenty years.

Granite Shaped Disc

This circular memorial marks the area where the cremated remains have been interred. The memorial has room for up to 60 letters (including spaces) and is available on a five year lease.

Granite planter memorial

Located in front and to the right of Chapel of remembrance near the disabled car park. The octagon planter offers the choice a granite tablet with a maximum of 6 lines 70 letters (including spaces) of gold leaf inscription with a vase at the base for a single flower. The dedication period is ten or twenty years.

Black memorial plaque on stand Located with other plaques on a black frame stand in the gardens of remembrance. It is available for ten or twenty years with a maximum inscription up to 60 letters (including spaces).

The Sanctum 2000

Located in the gardens of remembrance and comes complete with a vase for cut flowers, the black granite tablet being inscribed with gold leaf and available with motif if required. This memorial will hold a maximum of 2 sets of cremated remains and available for lease on ten or twenty years.

Burial Choices

Bereavement Services manages

Dringhoues Cemetery which is situated off the Tadcaster Road adjacent to York College buried within Dringhouses are some notable names including three members of the Terry confectioners family. This small closed cemetery which dates back from 1926 provides a peaceful and tranquil haven for the departed with the traditional graves being located on the left hand side of the main entrance.

On the right hand side is an area for cremated remains able to accommodate four sets of cremated remains and these are available on a fifty year lease. Most of the cemetery is laid out in a style that allows access to all areas throughout the year, so that family and friends are able to visit during winter months. The cost of arranging a burial is made up of two elements; the cost of buying the piece of land or “grave” and the cost of opening the grave which is the “interment”. At present there are no new graves available at Dringhouses Cemetery, however, Fulford Cemetery and York Cemetery do offer this facility.

Grave Headstone

City of York Council wishes to ensure that all grave memorials within the cemetery are of an approved type and are erected in a safe and satisfactory manner by authorised and experienced companies. The following are the basic points of reference in relation to the provision and erection of all grave headstone memorials permitted within the Council’s cemetery.

It should be noted that memorials remain in the ownership of the applicant and hence all responsibility for all future maintenance thereof.

Application to erect a grave headstone memorial.

• All proposals for memorials to be erected within Dringhouses cemetery must first be submitted to and approved by the Bereavement Services Manager. • All proposals shall show full details

of the memorial indicating size,

material to be used, the inscription and full installation details. • Upon approval a permit to erect

a memorial will be issued to the stonemason. Forms are available from York Crematorium office and all local stonemasons.

General information

• In the interest of all concerned especially

stonemasons concrete grip/landings are currently in situ having been constructed to current NAMM (National Association of Memorial Masons) specification. This will allow immediate fixing of an upright memorial using the ground anchor system recommended by NAMM. • It is recommended that in this area

traditional upright memorials are fixed giving the grave owner more choice and a more aesthetic appearance within the

cemetery. There are limitations to the size and width of the memorial with a maximum height of 3 feet (914mm) by 2 feet (610mm) with a base not exceeding 12 inches (305mm) deep. • Memorials must be of hard natural stone such as granite or marble. No soft stone, timber, metal, concrete or artificial or reconstructed stone is permitted. • If it is considered that the condition of a memorial presents a danger, the Council reserves the right to either remove or lay the memorial flat to make it safe.

Fulford Cemetery

Fulford Cemetery is owned and maintained by Fulford Parish Council. It is the main burial site for the City of York and is open to people of all faiths and from any area. It is a 28 acre open-plan lawned cemetery, maintained to a very high standard with a new section providing woodland burials. The site is bordered by trees and characterised by an open, carefully maintained layout. Graves are dug by hand. There is an area for Muslim burials, a separate area for children and facilities for the burial of cremated remains. There is a large military section which together with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is maintained to a very high standard and

contains the graves of military personnel who lost their lives whilst serving in World War I & II.

The site has recently been extended thus enabling Fulford Cemetery to serve the community for many decades to come. Day to day management of the Cemetery is in the hands of the Superintendent, Mr Stuart McCabe who is assisted by a part-time administrative assistant and a team of five full time groundsmen. The Parish Council is pleased to offer a friendly and accessible service to everyone and its staff are always ready and willing to help visitors to the Cemetery.

York Cemetery Trust

The Trust is a non-profit making registered charity (no. 1075408) that maintains the site in partnership with The Friends of York Cemetery, also a registered charity (no. 701091). The cemetery is not affiliated with

or funded by City of York Council or any local authority.

York Cemetery receives no maintenance grants and relies for the bulk of its income on the cemetery business. The site is managed under an ecological land management plan, which is implemented by our staff and volunteers. The plan allows for some areas to remain undisturbed to encourage and protect the habitat of much of the wildlife sustained by the 24-acre site. To this end, the Trust ask the public not to use chemical pest controls or weed killers on site. Here are some of the answers to those questions:

• Approximately 72% of all deaths in the United Kingdom are cremated.

• Cremation is not acceptable

to Judaism and Islamic faiths. • Any kind of religious service can be

held at the crematorium or the service may take place in any separate place of worship, followed by a brief committal ceremony at the crematorium. • A service within the crematorium

can be non – religious • Before a cremation can be arranged

there are a number of legal procedures that must be completed with the responsibility for these arrangements falling to the next of kin or executor. A funeral director will usually make all the arrangements for you but you will have

to sign the relevant statutory documents as well as registering the death. • You can arrange a funeral without enlisting the services of a funeral director. The bereavement services team at York will be able to offer assistance and explain the procedures. • The coffin is manually transferred to the crematory after the service with the cremation taking place that day under the Federation of Burial and Cremation (FBCA) Code of Cremation Practice. • If you so wished the introduction of

the coffin into the cremator can be witnessed. Please advise your funeral director at the earliest opportunity.

• Any jewellery on the deceased

should be removed before the coffin is taken to the crematorium. • Generally each cremation is carried out

separately. However, exceptions can be made in the case of a mother and a baby or small twin children in such cases both bodies are contained within one coffin. • The coffin is always placed within the cremator in exactly the same condition as when it is received at the crematorium. • To ensure that cremated remains

are kept separate throughout the cremation process an identity card accompanies the coffin and cremated remains throughout the process until final dispersal or collection. • The cremation of an adult will usually result in cremated remains weighing between 2 and 4 kg. However, in the case of a small infant there may be very little or no remains after cremation.

Do we live after death?

A personal viewpoint.

Most of us find ourselves pondering this

question at some point in our lives. Indeed, following the death of a loved one, it is often foremost in our minds.

The cycle of life inevitably takes us from birth through the many and varied events of our lives and ultimately to the point of our passing, but what does this mean to us? What do we believe will happen to us and how should we prepare ourselves?

Some are well prepared and have a clear belief structure in place as to how they feel about this most fundamental question. Others though have no formal religion in their lives and are left searching for meaning and a way of making sense of their lives and of the loss of loved ones.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37, an event which made me think long and hard about the meaning of life and prospect of an early death. It prompted me to find out what is actually known about what happens to us when we die and I was fortunate to meet some very special people who have dedicated their lives to helping others who are dying and the bereaved families.

These people, along with some books, have made a big difference to my own perception of what might happen and have helped to give me a sense of peace and purpose, which I wanted to share with you all in the hope that it might bring some of the same to you.

One of the foremost experts on near death experiences, Dr. Raymond Moody, has written a number of very interesting books detailing his research on individuals who have experienced clinical death or come

near to death after illness or accident and who have come back with startlingly similar experiences.

One of the most interesting facts about Dr. Moody’s research is that the stories share amazing similarities regardless of the age, sex, culture or religion of those sharing their experiences. Most talk of the first stage being a feeling of separating from the body and then being able to see their bodies in the hospital or wherever they were. Many were able to comment on things that were happening to them that were consequently verified by the hospital staff, despite the fact that the individuals were certainly unconscious and in some cases had been diagnosed as clinically dead.

The second stage is commonly a feeling of going through a black tunnel and eventually seeing a light, at which point they often find themselves in a stunningly beautiful place, with a feeling of peacefulness and love surrounding them. One account from Dr. Moody’s book, ‘Reflections on Life after Life’, from an elderly gentleman who had a cardiac arrest, describes the experience as follows: “All of a sudden I was just somewhere else, there was a gold looking light everywhere. Beautiful.

There was music. And I seemed to be in a countryside with streams, grass and trees, mountains. But when I looked around - if you want to put it that way - they were not trees and things as we know them to be. The strangest thing to me seemed to be that there were people there, not in any kind of form or body, as we know it; they were just there. There was a sense of perfect peace and contentment; love. it was like I was part of it. That experience could have lasted the

whole night or just a second ... I don’t know.” There are many more descriptions of a similar nature from various different types of people who have experienced near death experiences and nearly all of them also talk about having the opportunity to review their lives. Invariably, after this point, they then feel themselves being pulled away from the place they are in and find themselves back in their bodies. They all seem to share a common feeling though, that they have a renewed purpose, they have lost all fear of death and although they cannot remember all the knowledge they seem to have when they were on the other side, they feel a new zest for life. They are no longer interested in purely material things and they appreciate the simple things in life, joy on the face of a young child, a beautiful sunset, or enjoying the rain on their fingertips.

When we lost my Grandma and a few years later my Grandad, I found this information of great comfort during what is, for most of us, a very difficult time. It helped me to feel that they would finally be at peace and in a beautiful place.
