• A living room requires a conversation area.

• The dominant furniture grouping is called the primary conversation area.

– Minimum size is an 8' to 10' diameter. – A 10' x 14' living room accommodates it.

• The room should be near the kitchen to facilitate service.

• The room should be near the living room so guests can move easily to the dining room.

• Dining room size is determined by: – number of people to be served

– furniture planned for the space – circulation

• Four people require at least 80 sq. ft., while eight require about 180 sq. ft.

• A dining room over 200 sq. ft. is considered very large.

• About 2' of table length should be allowed for each seated person.

• A 3-1/2' x 5-1/2' table seats four to six people.

• At least 32" of space is needed between the table edge and wall.

• About 36" to 44" are needed for space to walk around seated guests.

Family Rooms

• Most households need space for

action-oriented pursuits such as games, hobbies, dancing, and so on.

• Family rooms have informal decor and durable furniture.

• Family rooms are increasing in size to serve as a quiet refuge or place for fun. • In some homes, family rooms are

replacing living rooms.

• The ideal size for a family room depends on:

– the activities planned

– number of people who will use the room • At least 12' x 16' is recommended.

Entryways

• Entryways control circulation to different parts of a home and should minimize the interruption of other activities.

• There are three main types of entries: – main entry (guest entry)

– special-purpose entry – service entry

• The main entry is the part of the home that

guests see first. It often: – is impressive.

– appears near the center of the dwelling.

• Entry into a hall or foyer is preferred.

• An entry closet is desirable.

Entryways

• The space needed for an entry depends on the number of people using it and the dwelling's size.

• The minimum space needed for one person to open a door is 3' x 5'.

• The minimum foyer size recommended is 6' x 6'.

• Minimum foyer closet size is 2' x 3'.

• The closet should be located 4' to 5' from the doorknob side of the door.

• The floor should be durable, water- and soil-resistant, and easy to clean.

• Slate, ceramic or asphalt tile, and vinyl floor coverings are popular.

Always use a pencil.

Plot a dot on first square on graph paper,

then count how many squares (1 sq=1 foot or 12 “). After counting the squares, plot the

2nd dot.

Activity 3-2: Foyer Redesign

• What does it mean to “viewing guests as they arrive”? What needs to be included in the redesign to accommodate this?
