CASE : CANADA ICE & FARM Co

Introduction

Ice Canadian Breweries, headquartered in Canada and is owned by Canada Ice & Farm Co. ICB

owns and operates five U.S. breweries and six retail locations in New York, Vermont, California,

Oregon and Washington. It makes and sells the historic line of Genesee beers, Dundee Ales

& Lagers, the Original Honey Brown Lager and Seagram’s Escapes. It also regularly features

seasonal beers in its rotating series of Variety Packs. Along with its own brands, Ice Canadian

Breweries contract brews dozens of beers and malt beverages for other companies.

Challenges of Ice Canadian Breweries (ICB)

Ice Canadian Breweries (ICB) manufactures fine range of beers and malt beverages, which

are renowned across the U.S. With various manufacturing units, warehouses, stockyard and

retail outlets, ICB was facing trouble while maintaining inventory records, creating sales and

purchase orders and tracking sales, profit/loss based upon transactions. Inventory management

was one of the biggest challenges faced by this brewery company.

Inventory management is one of the most important business practices, which no business

can ever afford to overlook. However, with an out-dated inventory management system, Ice

Canadian Breweries (ICB) was lacking behind. With the vast business reach and growing

business transactions everyday, managing complex inventories became a very hectic task for

this business organization.

Another challenge faced by the business organization was in generating and scanning barcodes

for the manufactured beers and beverages.

company-1. The need barcode generation and scanning

Ice Canadian Breweries (ICB) were using an out-dated inventory management software, which didn’t supported barcode generation or scanning process. They were using one another software for the barcode scanning process. However, since both of them were not synchronized, they stored data at different places. Following which, one had to enter data manually in the inventory management software. This was time taking and had huge possibilities of manual error.

2. Stock transfer from one facility to another

The out-dated inventory management software which the company was using, stored data on local drives only. It had no sync with the inventory data stored in another computer system, working at different location. Hence, transferring stock and from one location to another brought several issues for the management staffs as well. They had to manually delete inventory records from one system and enter it again on another

system, where the stock was to be transferred. This was time taking and always needed one person for inventory updating process.

3. Exporting inventory data into .csv files

ICB was unable to export the inventory records in .csv file format and store on local drives. Also, sending current inventory records or even carrying them in a portable hard disk was not possible.

4. Importing inventory data from .csv files

The inventory software used by Ice Canadian Breweries (ICB) didn’t had the option to import inventory records saved in .csv file format. One had to manually enter all inventory data into the software, which required great efforts and quality time as well. The chances of manual error were high as well.

5. Simplifying the process of creating sales

and purchase orders

Creating sales and purchase orders was another name for trouble in the company. Since tracking inventory records and real-time stock reports was a tough task, they found it difficult to create fresh sales and purchase orders. They needed to exit from the inventory software and prepare a list of products to be purchased or sold, at another place. This was confusing and time taking as well.

Following which, Ice Canadian Breweries (ICB) were looking for an advanced inventory management system, which is also available as an application on smartphones and tablets.
