Context
The dallas programme (delivering assisted living lifestyles at scale) has competitively selected and funded 4 communities that aim to impact the lives of 169,000 people across the UK by 2015 and will show how
independent living technologies, services and systems can be used to promote well-being and provide top quality health and care, enabling people to live independently. The aim of the communities will be to open new markets in social innovation, service innovation and wellness, enabled by technology.
A total investment of £37.3 million has been made in the UK-wide dallas programme. This comprises an £19.6 million investment by the Technology Strategy Board and the National Institute for Health Research, a further £5.4m contribution from the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands
Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise, plus additional investment from the communities. We aim to unlock new markets in social innovation, service innovation and wellness, enabled by technology, and show that technologies and services can be made available at a sufficient scale and cost to enable independent living. The programme will help to grow the assisted living sector and position UK companies to take
advantage of increasing global demand for assisted living goods and services.
Dimensions
The Technology Strategy Board is investing over £300 million each year to stimulate profitable technology exploitation in the UK. The Assisted Living Innovation Platform
represents £50m of investment as part of the Medicines and Healthcare portfolio. Our vision is one where business innovation and the application of technology will enable people to live their lives to the fullest, where and how they want to. We see people first and not just the medial conditions or chronological age or disability or need. We see a society in which the application of technology and the brilliance of innovative new services and systems will create a level playing field for all in the future.
Our Assisted Living Innovation Platform (ALIP) – created in 2007 – set out to bring together interested parties who recognised we all need to change in order to achieve our vision. We are promoting independent living and improved quality of life by making technology better, cheaper and more
desirable. We are driving innovation to meet the demand for independent living and to date we have ran 11 competitions, with more than 200 participating organisations in 60 ALIP projects worth £89 million.
The ideal future scenario is one where we all have more independence. Technology developments can help to support this but they are only part of a solution that needs to work in line with the way we live our
everyday lives. Technology is already pervasive and we need to recognise that technology in itself is not a solution. Instead, we need to re-imagine the delivery of
services to support our future lifestyles.
